Neo's new PSP motion sensor
Apparently, a PSP peripheral manufacturer called Neo has come up with a novel -- if somewhat useless (currently, at least) -- add-on for the handheld game system: a motion sensor. It's unclear right now what the possible uses for the sensor might be, and frankly, if it's something like an accelerometer, or a light sensor, or some other, cooler, more funky sensor we haven't thought of yet. There is one thing we can tell you for sure: it won't work on your PSP slim. Apparently, the device is aimed at home-brewers and DIY'ers -- and we're pretty sure they'll find something interesting to do with the thing. The company says it's available now, but we couldn't locate the little guy, or its price... so good luck.

Made for DIYers from DIYers.
the quality looks bad in the pic.
thats all im sayin`.
Blake @ Sep 17th 2007 6:48PM
Your point?
The people who would use this likely have their psp spread out across a workdesk anyway.
oGMo @ Sep 17th 2007 7:22PM
Err, exactly what looks bad about the quality? Maybe if there was PCB, wires, and solder hanging out, but it's like a little plastic key. For DIY this is pretty high quality.

Plus judging from the size, this won't even protrude from the PSP, since the slot it plugs into is indented by what looks to be the same amount, though we'd actually have to see it inserted to be sure.

They're also selling solid gold motion sensors for a couple of thousand bucks more for those with discriminating taste. Add a little more bling to your prized PSP.

Homebrew ball-bearing avoid-the-holes maze thingy
that would be cool.
Wonder how sensitive it is?
McKay @ Sep 17th 2007 6:57PM
It would rock if that thing made it so you could tilt the PSP instead of using the analog stick.
Mercury Meltdown would be so much fun to play like that.
DDathcha @ Sep 17th 2007 6:57PM
Would you be able to use the Lair motion controls via Remote Play on your PSP? What about playing Flow on your PSP with this motion sensor? I guess it would be all moot if it was just a light sensor.

I rarely say this about addons that stick out of your gadgets but if this baby is going for cheaps -- very cool!
August @ Sep 17th 2007 7:27PM
Nah.
I think it senses how poorly the psp is doing compared to the DS.
Zing!

I swear, the PSP hacking community cares more about the PSP than sony does. But damn, the guys who hack the PSP are incredible.
AL1EN @ Sep 17th 2007 8:13PM
Oooooh! Oooooh! LOCO ROCO where the tilt of the PSP controls the tilt of the "world"! FINALLY I wouldn't look silly tilting my PSP when playing that game!!!!
Jaylati @ Sep 17th 2007 9:40PM
Haha...actually tilting the PSP? That makes two of us. This would rock on Loco (pun intended).
Twitchy @ Sep 17th 2007 11:13PM
Has anybody else noticed that it takes up the 3.5mm headphone jack - games are going to suck a bit without sound, e.g. the soundtrack to LocoRoco is half the fun.
August @ Sep 18th 2007 1:03AM
It's OK guys.
If what I did during summer internships the last three years is anything like what I'll be doing when I graduate, I'll probably be making more than both of you in 5 years.
jax @ Sep 18th 2007 2:13PM
You sound like a fool.
teej @ Sep 18th 2007 1:59PM
why would anyone want to play a motion-sensitive/tilt game on the any handheld device? i can understand a tilt controller for a console, in which the display is independent from the controller. however, tilting a PSP while playing a motion-sensitive game would get annoying because you're attempting to focus on a tiny, moving screen. sure, you could hook up your PSP to your tv, but if you're at that point in life, buy a console.
Hero @ Sep 19th 2007 12:33AM
Doesn't that fit the Mini O.o? Homebrewers, on your mark, get set, GO!!!!!!!
Ash @ Sep 22nd 2007 8:19PM
That looks like a bar of soap.
