Samsung's YP-P2 available on Amazon
We know you can't wait to get your sweaty, smearing mitts all over Samsung's little YP-P2, AKA the "palm theater" (the company's words, not ours). Well, it looks like you won't have to wait much longer, as the eighth wonder of the media player world has just made an appearance on Amazon.com, with an option to put the 8GB, widescreen, touch sensitive, Bluetooth equipped iPod-challenger in your cart and do some serious checking out (provided you have an extra $249.99 laying around). Now, don't go spilling your beverage on yourself rushing over to the site, because even though you can pay for the thing, Amazon is still listing the player as "In stock soon," so while you'll be able to impress friends and family members with the news of your purchase, you won't actually be able to show it to them.

so you're saying, apple doesn't have a corner on the market of design? *gasp*
Al @ Sep 18th 2007 11:34PM
not with the recent string of Samsung players that have been out since late 2005 or so, like the K5, K3 and their newer variants.
Alpha899 @ Sep 19th 2007 3:30AM
The first every MP3 player i had was a Yepp, way back in '98, it was small and had a lcd display, but a good design. Apple doesn't hold anything to design, most people think they're players are unique and others copy, but there have been (even for the iPhone) players out long before ipods that looked like ipods.

nikster @ Sep 19th 2007 5:14AM
Alpha, you have totally convinced me with your spam link to the "iSlim Nano". Wow - so original! Looks like Apple copied the entire iPod Nano design from them - it looks almost the same!
BS argument, and BS website.
This Samsung can stand on its own and doesn't need any comparison to Apple. It looks nice. If it works nice, too, all the better, I want to see some tests!
Invisiblemoose @ Sep 18th 2007 11:31PM
Looks pretty.
*glances at his Zune*
/sigh
michael @ Sep 18th 2007 11:56PM
Then why'd you buy a Zune if you don't like it?
Invisiblemoose @ Sep 19th 2007 12:07AM
I got it for 8 bucks in a woot bag of crap. Can't complain, lol.
Really, I like my Zune. It's nice and sturdy, and has great video quality. The design is actually very nice, it's just not anywhere near as slick as that Samsung PMP...
Josef F @ Sep 19th 2007 7:17AM
Right. Because the most important feature of a media player is that it looks cool.
(and as long as we're using that tired old /emote meme)
/listens to his Zune.
/listens to his old iPod.
/remembers why he bought the Zune in the first place. Sound quality.
ryan @ Sep 18th 2007 11:33PM
Looks awesome! now hopefully it will be easy to use...
Montusama @ Sep 18th 2007 11:34PM
The Day has come.....now why did it come when I'm flat ass broke....I need to work about two weeks or a 40 hour week for that..... *cries*
DAZA @ Sep 18th 2007 11:40PM
Dude, you need a better job.
Montusama @ Sep 18th 2007 11:48PM
Replying to my own...post....thats a new one
My job does indeed suck, my skin is so dry its breaking apart damn dishwasher but I'm lamely looking for a far less dry and hot job (and wet) but I need the job experience
rex @ Sep 18th 2007 11:36PM
Well geez Samsung, why did you have to go and release your YP-P2 right after I just bought my Creative Zen 4gb! Actually, I'm a tactile button type of guy.. And to tell you the truth I was wondering how it would feel to have a touchscreen so instead I used my Chocolate phone to see if I would of liked it. Unfortunately, I didn't...
Good price though.
aron @ Sep 18th 2007 11:39PM
So cool when I first saw it, but the iPod Touch ruined the anticipated for the YP-P2 for me. Hard to choose between the two..
yahoo! Bluetooth! @ Sep 19th 2007 12:00AM
i'll help; for $50 you get WiFi
crescentdavid @ Sep 18th 2007 11:58PM
Looks really interesting. Wonder how it sounds? Does it hiss like the iphod touch ? See here for one of many, many links on the problem with the touch and video and sound quality: http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=205272
Al @ Sep 19th 2007 12:07AM
but no wireless headphones support. Not to mention you can load flac flies, and with the Asian firmware UMS capabilities. Then again this is 3in compared to the touches 3.5in screen.
seoultrain @ Sep 19th 2007 12:23AM
ipods were never known for their sound quality. Except for the original ipod shuffle. That one, I believe, had a very nice sound processor. It's horrible that the apple store sells ridiculously expensive bang & olufsen or bose headphones/earphones alongside their ipods, when you could have better sound with a cheaper mp3 player and cheaper headphones. And don't even get me started on the ipod dock speaker systems.
Xavier Gill @ Sep 19th 2007 5:56AM
@Yahoo! Bluetooth!
Your assuming that everything else is the same. It's pretty clear that, although beatiful on the outside, Apple cut every corner possible on the inside. The Samsung will have a far superior sound quility, a better screen, better codec support, bluetooth and, like every other mp3 player since the turn of the century, an FM radio. Believe it or not some people do just want a high quility music/video player and also it doesn't force you to buy a case because of a inexplicably shiny back.
Al @ Sep 18th 2007 11:52PM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INfAXLGwz5o new video of it
Invisiblemoose @ Sep 18th 2007 11:55PM
Lol. That's the most ridiculous navigation I have ever seen.
brett @ Sep 19th 2007 12:13AM
...more like ridiculously amazing. this is incredibly thoughtful input design...
ilh @ Sep 19th 2007 6:21AM
You can change the navigation menu style, that's just 1 of them.
classic white @ Sep 19th 2007 12:10AM
hmmm... no wifi or web browser
Simon @ Sep 20th 2007 2:27PM
On a screen that small? Who cares? lol
emmzee @ Sep 19th 2007 12:47AM
When I read this blog post, I thought of The Simpsons Homerpalooza episode:
Guy: Are you being sarcastic, dude?
Dude: ..... I don't even know anymore.
Yem @ Sep 19th 2007 12:18AM
$249 for 8Gb, 3" touch and bluetooth vs (Sandisk View) $199 for 16Gb, 2.5" r/o and wires.
SmartedPanda @ Sep 19th 2007 12:23AM
I wish it was 179.99 or something, because 200 for a 30Gb Zune...I hate the zune but... space > touchscreen
Justin @ Sep 19th 2007 3:24PM
Spring for the Archos 605 WiFi...it has both touchscreen AND space, if that's what you want.
SmartedPanda @ Sep 20th 2007 12:19AM
Isn't it like 400 bucks?
azerk1 @ Sep 19th 2007 12:27AM
I don't know if this means anything but when I was looking to see if there is any chance that this might come out in a 16GB version I found this: http://www.shop.bt.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4PBK&CategorySelectedId=11212&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11212,50429
Maybe there is hope after all.
ilh @ Sep 19th 2007 6:19AM
They've got their info wrong (or Samsung isn't telling us something). Product code JCW is the 8Gb white version. Dabs have done the same.
Xidius @ Sep 19th 2007 5:18PM
The first of many failing iPod Touch competitors. No multi-touch, clunky photo viewing, ugly ui, horrid navigation, the main menu(?), and as others have mentioned: no wifi? Yikes.
Posting from my iPod, btw.

Quix @ Sep 19th 2007 12:43AM
Touch screens suck! And that thing is going to be covered in greasy fingerprints. Gross! And what happens if I drop it and the screen breaks? I bet the real-world battery life is going to be pathetic.
Oh...wait...
...I thought this was an Apple product. *deactivates Ignorant Blathering Apple Hater mode*
There, all fixed.
This Samsung looks awesome!!!!

TA @ Sep 19th 2007 12:45AM
I'm having problems picking between this or the iPod Touch. Half of me wants to pick the Samsung one because of reliability, UI, as well as definite bluetooth and non-iPodness, while the other half wants the iPod Touch for the web browser, wider screen, UI again, and design. The whole of me just wants to buy both...Any ideas?
Ant @ Sep 19th 2007 5:04AM
The knowing side of me that has been buying gadgets for 20 odd years says wait for 12 months. All this tek is new(ish) and 12 months is about enough time for Apple, Samy and all the others to listen a little bit and add some real value, specially memory.
However, the gadget lover in me want's the Touch, just for the WiFi (and 16gig flash if I must have memory so low). Take your pick, this stuff will be dated much quicker than normal and the next gen Touch will have many more bells and whistles (as long as the trend to hold back tek is reduced).
Conclusion, if you work hard for your money wait, resist the tek, knowing that you will smugly walk into the Apple, or Samy store the end of next year and get a product that will have much more to it and age at a much slower rate.
Maff @ Sep 19th 2007 8:48AM
'age at a slower rate' lol, not likely!
Jeve Sobs @ Sep 19th 2007 12:57AM
As usual , Apple charges more and gives you less functionality. I want one in burgundy ! Nice job Sammy !
Quix @ Sep 19th 2007 1:08AM
Yes, "less functionality" as in real wi-fi with real Web browsing and a real wireless music store.
Blind anti-Apple ignorance. As usual.
Bigsby @ Sep 19th 2007 1:36AM
I definetally agree with you that the iPod touché does have wi-fi and a web browser, as well as a wireless music store, and Jeve Sobs is doing the AA ignorance, but this P2 definetally has something going for it. It's a much closer race than it was before, and this mp3 player has a special place in my heart.
I wouldn't ever use either of those as a web browser anyways, they're both too small for it to be practical, just like the web browser on the PSP. I'd use the bluetooth much more than the wifi.
I've also found that Apple exaggerates on their battery life (like my mini, and 4g iPod), while my Z5 even a year after I've gotten it, impressively has the same battery life (software updates have brought its battery life up from 35 to 44 hours, and the battery life has only degraded a little bit).
That and I just like the look of the P2 more than the touché.
Still, the iPod touché is quite a thing of beauty.
z @ Sep 19th 2007 2:01AM
4GB version for the cheapskates out there ($200):
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VQ7ZJM/
I wish all these players had better video codec support.
Bigsby @ Sep 19th 2007 2:10AM
Don't worry, it seems all Samsung players from the past few years have had mediocre codec support, with more added on later. I'm sure they'll add .ogg and all the proper video codecs on soon.
Thomas @ Sep 19th 2007 2:43AM
iPhone-Killer? about time the multi-billion dollar companies get some good r & d and designers on their team... this is absolutely beautiful... would like to see an actual product pic tho if you know what i mean...
PMP-Cinema is the term i am liking...
JY @ Sep 19th 2007 3:47AM
And now the 16 GB Creative Zen was dropped to $250 on Amazon as well.
http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Zen-16-GB-Black/dp/B000UVBDRS/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-6447227-9375248?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1190187903&sr=8-1
That pretty much kills this Samsung gig for me.
bruckwine @ Sep 19th 2007 8:11AM
Sweet now at $250..got it on my wishlist..but still waiting to see if anything else spectacular comes out before Christmas!
JB @ Sep 19th 2007 8:47PM
I've seen conflicting info from various sources but can't find anything on the official samsung site so... i have a couple questions of anyone in the know.
when it says text viewer, what doc type? just txt or pdf too?
does this support divx/xvid or avi?
are those buttons on the side or just jacks/ports/grips?
