40GB PS3 rumors continue to swirl -- Foxconn tipped as manufacturer
Pocket-link UK is confidently reporting that those 40GB PS3 rumors are true. In fact, they've gone so far as to claim that Sony has turned away from ASUS and in the direction of Foxconn to manufacture their new entry-level console. Pricing is still unknown but formerly pegged at $400 for the US. If there's any truth to this then we should expect a Sony announcement to come during the Tokyo Game show, underway as we speak, or early next week in order to "spoil" Microsoft's Halo 3 launch.

I want a PS3 without a hard drive at all; I feel bad paying for something I will replace right away.
Maybe sell the hard drive after you take it out? It's basically new!
them 40gig hd are worthless
Blake,
You bring up a good point. I bought a 20GB at launch and have already since replaced the original drive with a 160GB drive.
Why not just put it into a 2.5" external enclosure and use it as a spare data drive? Or give it to someone else who could use it as a spare data drive? Granted, you're still paying for it, but there is always a good use for hard drives if you look. And 40 GB is still a decent capacity for critical files and documents that you absolutely cannot lose -- pr0n not included.
if Sony can pull this off right before the off early next week, or just an announcement saying it will come out in a month (or launch with one of their bigger games, R&C or Uncharted), it'd be a GREAT news for Sony.
or else all people will talk about this month and next will be xbox and Halo.
Oh, please include the new Dualshock 3 in this,

Think it will take more than a cheaper PS3 sku to spoil the Halo 3 launch. A lot more.
its a pathetic attempt to draw ppl to the ps3 but its games ppl want, with all the delays and games going multi platform the ps3 is worthless!
truly, how 'pathetic' of Sony to want to do better in the console market.
blaming Sony for delay from third-party games or Ubisoft (or any other develpers) from going mulitplatform?
What's next? blaming Sony for Chinese companies making Iphone knockoffs?
well i see home got delayed as all games are for the ps3, it matters not how much something costs when there are no games worth playing on the system, but being the most expensive option with no games just signals failure!
I blame Sony for delaying Home and DualShock 3 until Spring, which now is when I will have to buy a PS3. Now, I might not even get a PS3 because by then there will be no good reason to get it over the 360.
@kingofwale
yes, you can blame Sony because they aren't giving developers the proper tools required to adequately manufacture software for their cell processor.
Buy a 20G PS3, replace the hard drive yourself with the 160G HD (tutorials are on youtube) And BOOM, you have a 160GB PS3, no waiting!! No kidding
Tutorials on Youtube? You really need someone to explain in a video "Pull the hard drive out. Put the new one in"?
There's a Sony walkthrough in the manual that comes with the PS3.
The PS3's SATA hard drive is easy to replace and upgrade I have an 80 g.
Didn't Microsoft want to release Halo 3 on the PS3 launch? Wouldn't it be fun if Sony could release the 40GB PS3 on the Halo launch?
Is it Foxconn day; today?
sony may want to use Foxconn who have used sweatshop slave labour to make their products to save costs but this just digs a bigger grave for their dirty business practices.

"Lik-Sang.com Out of Business due to Multiple Sony Lawsuits
Tue Oct 24 2006 21:58:51 Hong Kong Time - Corporate Info
OUT OF BUSINESS NOTICE
Hong Kong, October 24th of 2006 - Lik-Sang.com, the popular gaming retailer from Hong Kong, has today announced that it is forced to close down due to multiple legal actions brought against it by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Sony claimed that Lik-Sang infringed its trade marks, copyright and registered design rights by selling Sony PSP consoles from Asia to European customers, and have recently obtained a judgment in the High Court of London (England) rendering Lik-Sang's sales of PSP consoles unlawful.
As of today, Lik-Sang.com will not be in the position to accept any new orders and will cancel and refund all existing orders that have already been placed. Furthermore, Lik-Sang is working closely with banks and PayPal to refund any store credits held by the company, and the customer support department is taking care of any open transactions such as pending RMAs or repairs and shipping related matters. The staff of Lik-Sang will make sure that nobody will get hurt in the crossfire of this ordeal.
A Sony spokesperson declined to comment directly on the lawsuit against Lik-Sang, but recently went on to tell Gamesindustry.biz that "ultimately, we're trying to protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards, due to voltage supply differences et cetera; is not - in PS3's case - backwards compatible with either PS1 or PS2 software; will not play European Blu-Ray movies or DVDs; and will not be covered by warranty"."
how can you spoil something that already has $2.5 million on pre-order. that is lost cause.
Let Microsoft make the hardware for it?
yeah but sony has already dropped the price a few weeks back and still was outsold by 360 2 to 1.
Weird.. given that they are not meeting their shipment targets.. wouldnt they have an over abundance of PS3s in stock or (at least) under-utilised production capacity.
What is Foxconn gonna do that they cant.. are they making it out of cheaper components?
slave labour sweatshop as with apple and the iPod!
Ahh .. yes, totally forgot about that.
I fail to see how a 40GB PS3 would have any effect on Halo 3 sales. It doesn't really matter how many different SKU's Sony releases, or what kind of price drop they announce (barring an insanely huge one). No one is going to care until they start releasing a reasonable amount of AAA software titles.
At this point, nothing Sony or anyone else can do will affect the number of Halo 3 units sold next week. Most everyone that even wants the game has already pre-ordered it and I'm sure most of them have paid in full. Microsoft already has their money, all they have to do is deliver a product.
It won't spoil Halo game sales, but it might make people who haven't bought a new console yet reconsider if theory were going to get a new 360 and a copy of Halo 3. Halo 3 is a console seller remember? Price cuts are console sellers as well.
40 Gb is useless WHAT ABOUT THE 20GIGS MICROSOFT GIVES....u cant even replace it !!
What are you talking about? You might have to pay $180, but you can get a 120Gb HD
"Spoil Halo 3 launch" ???? LOL....how can you spoil 1 million+ pre-orders?....Ohhhh, new 40 gig ps3, let me go cancel my pre-order of Halo 3.
Its just too little, too late for me. They have taken too long. I have a lot invested in my 360 since its launch, and its a perfect system for me. Now with Bioshock out, Halo3 nearly here, Orange Box and Left4Dead around the corner...I wouldn't have time for a PS3 and its mediocre offerings. Not to mention the PC games like Crysis and a bunch of other great ones in the pipe. Hell, most people I know that don't have a PS3 would sooner use the $$ to upgrade a PC to handle Crysis.
>Its just too little, too late for me. They have taken too long. I have a lot invested in my 360 since its launch,
considering you made your 'choice' about 2 years ago, 1 year before PS3 launch, how is THIS too late? considering you don't plan to get it in the first place.
Let people who haven't decided what to go do their own thinking please
Geez, fanboys suck wherever you go.
Shaving 20gb off the HDD does not turn the PS3 into a 400 console.
The reason they keep upping the HDD is because it costs them almost nothing to do so and it increases the perceived value at their apparently-unchangeable price.
and you for get the more expensive 80gig ps3 in the us cost less to make is the emotion engine (ps2 chip) backwards compatibility has been removed, saving an estimated $40+on ever ps3 sold, but the unit retails for $100 more!
just like sony to market an inferior product and sell it to you for a hugely greater cost!
it seems like the 40GB hard drive would be more expensive thant 80GB. it hard to find a new 40gb hard drive these days. to be honest it hard to find anything less than a 100GB. the standard on a laptop now is at least 100GB and 320 GB on a desktop and I am talking about the sub-$600. this effects the 360 as well. the cost can't be that much between a 40GB and a 120GB these days.
Doesn't anyone remember this?

Halo 3 was originally rumored to ship when the PS3 came out...and we got nada.
Give Sony a break. I don't have either a PS3 nor an Xbox 360. I'm an occasional gamer, and I still enjoy playing action games on my trusty 1st gen PS2. I think I'll wait for the dust to settle over the Blu-Ray/HD DVD war until I even consider buying a next-gen console.
