Gateway is passing around an invite to New York's
Digital Life attendees, promising the grand unveiling of... something. The invite is tagged with a cute little "Gateway One" logo, or maybe it's "One Gateway," and all signs are pointing towards a new all-in-one PC with decent aesthetics. Also, breakfast will be served, so you know we're all over it. The press conference will be at 9AM EDT on September 27th.

*sigh*
Why does everyone have to copy Apple (this ad screams Apple, to me)?
At least HP does his own thing (while trying to grab part of Apple's pie, of course... Them artist ads aren't there for no reason).
AlexP @ Sep 20th 2007 9:42AM
its*
Chris @ Sep 20th 2007 9:51AM
This isn't a 4th grade spelling quiz... this is business, and businesses copy what works.
As an aside, did you say anything when Apple apparently copied that artist's video wall for an advertisement?
Tim @ Sep 20th 2007 9:57AM
I think PC makers are becoming wise to Apple's marketing tactics (simpler product line options, visually appealing), but this doesn't mean it's a ripoff.
They haven't even revealed a product... isn't it a bit early to cry "Apple!"
Reid Sorenson @ Sep 20th 2007 9:59AM
Doesn't mean the PC will be a ripoff, but the teaser invite sure is. Isn't that even the same FONT Apple uses?!
chadow @ Sep 20th 2007 10:02AM
You cant be serious.....
enzo @ Sep 20th 2007 10:27AM
Helvetica is just a great looking font, Apple as well as many other companies use it, including Microsoft. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helvetica
JimD @ Sep 20th 2007 10:29AM
Apple doesn't use Helvetica...it uses Myriad Pro.

Your fanboyism is limiting your world view. You're naturally only looking out for your best interest as a mac user. What about other users? I think they have the right to have a pleasant computing experience without using the Mac platform (why? i don't know.).
It's not a bad thing that they're inspired by Apple. They're striving for better design to give their brand a much needed boost. I view it as a positive thing because that will just push Apple to do something even more innovative with their all in one line.
Larz @ Sep 20th 2007 1:52PM
In what way does it scream Apple? There's no glaring white background nor glaring white product insinuating that they're better than everyone else (holier than thou). There's no insult-flinging towards the collaboration of thousands of other companies that make up the collective 'PC'. There's no copyright infringement, no lies about the computer being crash-proof, etc. I fail to see how they are copying Apple.
And if you're going to try and force the tired argument of company x copied Apple, perhaps you should think of all the copying Apple has done itself? Apple seems especially prolific at copying advertising campaigns... even when they ask permission and are refused, they do it anyways.
See:
Mac vs PC commercials (insults to consumers)
AppleTV commercial (blatant copying)
iPhone commercial (copying, after being refused)
...well just look at pretty much all advertising.
Oh and how about engadget's own article: http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/05/apples-little-problem-with-ripping-off-artists/
Also check out the kernel panic screen (similar to Windows blue screen, but with absolutely no useful information about the crash whatsoever).
and just for fun:
Church of Satan loves Apple

There are threee companies I vowed never to buy a product from.
#1 is Apple
#2 is Gateway.

Why won't you buy a computer from Gateway? (My parents have been using the same old Gateway computer they bought back in 1998, and it's still running strong.>
Mark @ Sep 20th 2007 10:39AM
Because he's a Dick.
Michael La Framboise @ Sep 20th 2007 1:53PM
Get your head outta your ass. jeeze I just don't get this crap... 'zomg! I won't ever buy an Apple product simply because its an Apple product; I can't give any valid reason but it looks like everyone's doing it, so why not just jump on the bandwagon to look cool.'
If you don't like a damn product I just DONT BUY IT - I don't go around every single damn blog whining about how I don't like it. If I think that American cars suck, then I just go out, and buy something else, simple as that.
Michael La Framboise @ Sep 20th 2007 1:58PM
and wait wait wait... the f*&$?!
"There are three companies I vowed never to buy a product from.

Umm... thats only two...

But will it be as beautiful as the Profile 6?

johnny5 @ Sep 20th 2007 11:01AM
Ha, I like that it's called "streamlined". It looks like Quasimodo.
Klaas @ Sep 20th 2007 11:46AM
Hahahha lol at that profile PC
"The innovative design of the Gateway Profile 6 houses the display and the computer components in one efficient package."
efficient package, lol, looks to me like they just glued one of their minitowers to a monitor.
irshliquor @ Sep 20th 2007 10:45AM
Our Gateway rep. showed us (I work at a college) their new addition to their Profile Line a few months ago. It's pretty nice, but it's still a Profile (Read: iMac knockoff with Windows installed). I'm no Mac Fanboy, but to me, a PC is a PC. I used to get excited about the newer, faster, better PC, but once you turn it on, it's still Windows staring back at you.
They look MUCH nicer than the old Profile series.
rj @ Sep 20th 2007 2:16PM
hmmm.. yeah, i luv how everything is an obvious rip-off from apple. funny though, i remember my dad getting a slender ibm netvista x-series all-in-one (at the time) well before the imac g4 graced it's presence. oh, the horror of it all..
johnny5 @ Sep 20th 2007 10:56AM
a) The invite is also using Myriad.
b) Stop yapping about Apple. It looks nothing like an iMac. And it is beautiful.
andy @ Sep 20th 2007 11:45AM
how do you know if doesn't look like an iMac yet, they have tried twice already and failed, they ripped off the g3 and then tried the g5 (badly)
PG @ Sep 20th 2007 11:55AM
Dear Engadget,
I love your blog. So much so, I read it several times daily. However, I am getting sick and tired of you talking down to any company or product that does not bear the fruity logo. I will bet my left testicle that if identical announcement would originate from Cupertino you would be all giddy with speculations of what new products would be bestowed upon you by Steve. Jobs could release a new iShit commode (why not? it's white and has a clean design) and you would find a reason to praise it. Stop. Please.
Thanks.
JT @ Sep 20th 2007 12:24PM
@PG
Where exactly are they talking down anything in this article? Take off the PC-Defense Force costume for a second and you might see that this article is fairly innocuous. So Gateway's announcing something next week that may have decent aesthetics. Wow, Gateway's stock must be reeling from that!
Larz @ Sep 20th 2007 1:52PM
Hahahaha, iShit! LOL, that's a good one. I gotta remember that.
Whiplash @ Sep 20th 2007 12:02PM
I predict this will be a simple variation on the typical "stylish" windows box. Basically the same old box with some cheap plastic color inserts or something. The reason Apple has succeeded is because they have a real design staff, just like car companies do. I don't think any other computer company really approaches their products that way. It seems to be more about lowering manufacturing costs as much as possible and making a product that looks "good enough". So we get mediocrity. I'll be very suprised if this machine is even remotely "beautiful".
Michael La Framboise @ Sep 20th 2007 3:47PM
"...they have a real design staff, just like car companies do."
Riiiight... just look at some of the cars on the roads these days and you'll what kind of 'design staff' they have working there...

So Acer is doing something good with its acquisition.
eureka @ Sep 20th 2007 7:15PM
Acer doesn't even own Gateway yet. How could they have possibly had anything to do with a new product that has likely been in development for the last year or more?
joey @ Sep 20th 2007 2:08PM
Duurrrhh we're just like Apple. But our new computers are cool because ... they're in plastic cases! And some will be in color!
sb @ Sep 20th 2007 5:28PM
I looked on Gateway's web site for a product announcement and found this link:

I would like to see something new and appealing that competes with Apple's iMac with windows on it.
keith waddington @ Sep 21st 2007 2:52AM
how about an iMac with Windows on it?
Simple. If that's what you really want.
Shame to mess up nice hardware though.
Keep smiling
