Intel just keeps banging out the hits from
IDF. After the handful of
McCaslin "next-quarter" and "coming-soon" UMPCs we saw from the chipmaker (and associates), Intel started busting out prototypes from its forthcoming
Menlow chipset, using smaller, 45nm
Silverthorne CPUs, and the 2009/2010 offering
Moorestown... which is the bad-boy you're looking at in these photos is based on. In a rather obvious homage to the iPhone, the chip-kingpin presented this do-anything, go-anywhere MID (provided you can cram this French-bread-sized device into a pocket). The device will feature a 45nm CPU as well, plus all kinds of goodies like integrated WiFi and WiMAX, and apparently 24 hours of battery life on a single charge. Obviously, this product will probably never see the light of day (at least not in this form factor), but then again -- you never really know. Check a few more photos after the break.

just so you know, IDF can also stand for the Israeli Defense Forces
John Doe @ Sep 20th 2007 10:49PM
Who gives a shit?
josh @ Sep 20th 2007 11:13PM
Thats what i first read it as because I know Intel does allot of work in Israel.
Xzavier @ Sep 20th 2007 11:59PM
Yea it is true. Lots of peps in here wont believe it but it is true!
At $3 billion a year, Israel receives more U.S. aid than any other country, and 40 percent of the U.S. foreign aid budget.

Sorry guys... don't go crazy on me with the red button, ok.
Josh @ Sep 20th 2007 9:15PM
Its as long as those phones they used in WWII. Too big.
Nice concept though, but if it can't fit into a pocket, it is likely that it wont see the light of day as a portable device.
Dae @ Sep 20th 2007 9:53PM
in 2009 pockets will grow twice its current size. making the phone entirely to small for your pocket.
Frankenstein Black @ Sep 21st 2007 11:45AM
Invest in clothing companies that make Painter's Pants! (Own Khaki and Jean versions) which satisfies that casual work dress code nicely. And guess what? The PDA, Wallet and headphones carry just fine.
Oh and don't forget folks, Mobile phone should always face screen side in towards your body (RF and Battery side out). I wont bore you with the 10+ (some obvious) reasons why...
skonofvulcan @ Sep 21st 2007 7:51PM
To me it looks just right in size for a front jeans pocket. But I'm over 6ft. It looks like it would go in a shirt pocket but stick out the top about half way which would be totaly impractacle. I do like the size however because when held horizontal it's like looking at the top couple of inches of a small notebooks screen. Why I would like that is that it would make for full size web browsing and you could just scroll down with your thumb, but would still keep the device at a reasonable size for portability. Now they got to figgure out how to keep it down to 1/8th of an inch thick or less.... :-)
jbcaro @ Sep 20th 2007 9:15PM
Hmmmm.....
gatorade @ Sep 20th 2007 9:17PM
wow engadget how original,
you refer to an all screen device as "an homage to the iphone"
last time i checked, the iphone wasnt the first.
404error @ Sep 20th 2007 9:26PM
Because it's not like all three of the read links do the same.
malaeum @ Sep 20th 2007 9:34PM
Now I'm usually one to poop on the iPhone, but the thats pretty clearly a knock-off, all chrome boarder, etc...
Eduardo F. @ Sep 20th 2007 9:44PM
not protecting them but I think that is a good way to describe it.
perpetualtranze @ Sep 20th 2007 11:26PM
I have to agree, how f*@$!ing original. I'm so glad that apple was the only one to develop the whole touch screen thing...engadget you are so sophomoric grow up already and realize that everything "touchscreen" be it phone or pmp is not an apple product knock-off. But then again Engadget sucks a big hairy one and yes I can say this because as we all know they don't respond to negative comments...or comments in general. All of you guys are f*&ck wads!!!
Josh @ Sep 20th 2007 11:47PM
Who cares about the iPhone comment? Just read the article for what it is - an interesting article on a new concept from intel. If the iPhone comments bother you that much just ignore them. Every product will inevitably be like another previously made and anyone with half a brain will connect the dots, but what you idiots do is just annoying - you spam the comments with a bunch of shit about "i hate the iPhone" "why does iPhone always come up?" "why are all of these assholes referring to the iPhone" trying to act all cool or something. Seriously, cut the crap - if you dont like the iPhone comments, great, take your opinion and keep it to yourself, dont post it on every freaking topic that merely refers to the iPhone.
All i want to do is browse the comments section for insightful comments, not inane flames about products.
gatorade @ Sep 20th 2007 11:58PM
@ josh,
well all i want to do is find a site with up to date tech products, and not have a strong bias towards a particular company. i have yet to find a site like engadget - apple so i am forced to come onto engadget to get my daily source of tech news. All the comments would stop if engadget would:
1.) make a seperate blog (like engadget HD) about apple
2.) report technology news without the wild swing of apple bias.
it wouldnt be that hard for engadget to make igadget.com or something like that. then you could save the real technlogy news for engadget.com and put all the biased dribble in that one.
ryan @ Sep 21st 2007 1:21AM
or, you could think about what you're reading and filter out the apple bias in your head..it really isn't that difficult.
niicholas @ Sep 21st 2007 5:53AM
but first to sell 1M devices, wasn't it?
i could now list you about 10 reasons why the iPhone is still all over the media. good reasons. not paranoid conspiracy theories like Apple controls da media, or is the best at generating hype.
Apple generates hype but that only works because the products are so desirable. Do the same with bad products and no-one would care.
DickHardknocks @ Sep 20th 2007 9:20PM
Either Engadget is owned by APPLE or Engadget knows there are people searching for Ipod information and they are hoping to get as many hits as possible.
Still, the LG Prada is getting absolutely no recognition except from anti-Apple dissenters who despise apple for their manufacturing/marketing processes.
Faulk_Wulf @ Sep 20th 2007 10:43PM
Actually, numerous times during the iPod releases, and iPhone release they gave people sick of Apple news ways to view the site with the Apple stuff filtered off. So... why is everyone griping again.
(Not just you, I just put my reply up here because it was the first one of this type. No offense or attack meant towards you. I'm sure you're cool. (*is not being sarcastic, honestly*))
fischju @ Sep 20th 2007 9:22PM
To agree with those 2 guys, EVERY DEVICE THAT HAS ONE LARGE SCREEN AND NO FACE BUTTONS IS NOT AN IPHONE RIPOFF
nikster @ Sep 21st 2007 5:29AM
you are right, looks like Intel actually didn't do a very good job with the ripping off. In fact, the few screens look like their concept is "we can display anything on that single big screen so let's make it look like three different phones!". it speaks volumes about their lack of ideas. If you were to design a real new product, it's probably the worst thing you could do.
r19578 @ Sep 20th 2007 9:30PM
iPhone Limo?
Matthew @ Sep 20th 2007 9:32PM
yeah you're all right...
every "all screen" device is being called an iPhone clone lately... but why?
maybe the iPhone's shape is just a screen with rounded corners? so shall I call the iPhone a rip of of my TFT monitor? what's next? calling microsoft surface an iPhone ripoff? as it has a screen and touch controls.
it's not that the iPhone has a very particular and original design! it's basically a screen with rounded corners!
Das @ Sep 20th 2007 11:20PM
Did you miss when every fanboy and his dog was calling the surface a giant iPhone?

"Sy @ May 30th 2007 2:08AM

contreras @ Sep 21st 2007 4:01AM
AGREE. It's amazing what a MARKETING CAMPAIGN can do in the mind of the consumers. Apple is now the OWNER OF TOUCHSCREEN (Just as GUI, mouse and mp3 players) Every new device that comes with touchscreen will be an iPhone copy. It's clear, iPhone has the super original design of being black, with metallic exterior to be able to identify its shape. AMAZING!
Whatever comes after is a rip-off. If a touchscreen comes with corners, the title will be: "cornered iPhone rip-off from (here put the name of any respectable technology developer that has the guts to launch a touchscreen device)", if it has buttons: "iPhone rip-off with buttons, who dares? (another name) dares!!!"... or if it has not a metalic or any clear color to show the shape: "iPhone rip-off without metalic border, how ORIGINAL!!!"...
this must be for the hits, I really don't think that Engadget, having so much experience in devices, can be claiming everything are iPhone rip-offs... please say it isn't so...
Argot @ Sep 20th 2007 9:33PM
I think it's great that Samsung, Apple, Sony and others get inspirered by the LG Prada. Good for them.
Andrew Cummings @ Sep 20th 2007 9:37PM
It would be cool if it had a scroll wheel on the side so you could scroll down full sized web pages easily.

Ummm, looks like the removable faceplate from a car stereo. I see I future for car stereo/gps/phone/etc/etc combos.
lothar @ Sep 21st 2007 10:16AM
I agree thats what I thought it looked like.
That would be very cool for a removable faceplate car stereo also if you could dock it in your home setup too. I couldnt see anything that size being used for anything else. On the other hand with a case that big that thing should have insane battery life.
Allan Barker @ Sep 20th 2007 9:39PM
What is the future iPhone going to look like? Maybe Apple and Google will come out with a phone the size and thickness of a credit card that does everything my Dopod does - at 10% of the current price. Can't wait. I love my Dopod - but it's a brick.
Cheers

For f*cks sake, quit spamming the damn comments on you opinion of its a iPhone rip / it's not a iPhone rip. So what if the writers like apple, they do and nothing will change. How about commenting on the article for once instead of bitching on how the article talks about the all mighty apple, only idiots have to point it out since we all have figured it out. Flame on...
Anyways, about the err... thing Intel made, it looks more like something id beat someone with. Seriously it looks more like a high tech faceplate for a car stereo then anything else.
Addy Osmani @ Sep 20th 2007 9:53PM
It's simple enough to understand, really. If they mention the word "iPhone" in any of their posts, the Google bot will pick it up and anyone searching for information about the iPhone will instantly get sent to even more of i..I mean engadget's pages.
Don't be surprised if they start comparing every new release to the iPhone. Next up, why the iPhone is better than your kettle for heating water.
luzzio @ Sep 20th 2007 9:54PM

John Doe @ Sep 20th 2007 10:54PM
Yes but then you wouldn't be able to do what you want with your phone. iPhones are for fanboi lapdogs who don't want to customize their wares. Apple does a wonderful job of locking down all their environments so you get one way of doing thing and if you don't like it tough shit.
sstaley @ Sep 20th 2007 10:00PM
This looks 'DIN' sized to me; maybe it is slated for the automotive market.
Dae @ Sep 20th 2007 10:00PM
i dont care if its a knock off from the iphone. I thought that was the idea. there should be a wave of thin sleek new cell phones.
Zach @ Sep 20th 2007 10:07PM
Why is everything with a big screen considered to be iPhone-like these days?
John Doe @ Sep 20th 2007 10:56PM
Because Engadget content posters are retards? I swear part of me thinks they do this shit to get hits.
KC @ Sep 20th 2007 10:15PM
This looks a lot like the Onyx
http://www.synaptics.com/onyx/
Bearius @ Sep 21st 2007 11:19AM
OMG The onyx is a complete rip off of the iPhone!!! (read with heavy French accented sarcasm)
Come on peeps, just 'cause it looks like the iPhone doesn't mean it is an iPhone, my partner owns an iPhone and for him it does everything he needs a phone to do. He's not a geek, not an apple lover, just someone who wanted an easy to use, intuitive device. I wouldn't own one myself because I like to customize my gadgets, but to each his own. But I do agree with a lot of you in here. It would be nice for Engadget to curb the iPhone references for every device that will come out from now on that sport a similar look and feel but frankly some people should
spend their energies better than getting all riled up about any reference to Apple technology in here. Just my 2 cents worth...
rex @ Sep 20th 2007 10:25PM
I can definitely see this as an "in-home" use device instead of a mobile one. Because landline phones have to be upgraded to touchscreen ones someday... and plus it could be used as an interweb thing too..
It's not an iPhone.. it's a MID!
yandong2000 @ Sep 20th 2007 10:29PM
I am a webmaster. Is there anyway i use iPhone to monitor my web site health 24/7 ? If it can do it, it will be really cool. Right now, my solution is to have a free web site monitoring solution on YMU http://youmonitor.us if ther is any problem to visit my web site, my mobile phone can get alert message from YMU. I think if i buy iPhone, I can directly log on YMU site to check my web site health. coooool!!
dj-kenpo @ Sep 20th 2007 10:44PM
you just answered your own question.. so I'm not sure what your point was... the iphone has internet,.. so where are you confused. yes. it does that.
yandong2000 @ Sep 27th 2007 10:10PM
Thanks for your answer dj-kenpo. my point is if i use iPhone, I can use it to access some online web site monitoring service and make them to alert me via iPhone when site is down or slow to response. I am a web site owner. So I think this can make my work easier :)
Faulk_Wulf @ Sep 20th 2007 10:36PM
I like this. iPhone Rip? Maybe, maybe not. Intel should market this, or Apple showed "borrow" the concept. (Or Microsoft.) The size isn't that bad. Just put it on a carabeener on your hip, or any other kind of lanyard or carrying case for that matter. Its not really that big. Two Zunes end to end at most? There have been less aesthetic and less practical devices, I'm sure.
