Chinavasion's CVASQ-C811 does it all, without style
At this point simple NES emulation is pretty run-of-the-mill on most dubiously-legal Chinese PMPs, so it looks like Chinavasion is going for the gusto with the new CVASQ-C811 PMP. In addition to rocking the NES action, the ever-so-subtly-designed unit can also play Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Genesis games when placed in its dorky little gaming dock. Other than that, you're looking at a pretty-run-of-the-mill PMP: 2GB of storage with SD expansion, 3-inch 320 x 240 screen, AVI-only video support, and mass storage compatibility. When you get bored of video games, Chinavasion has also thoughtfully included an ebook reader, so if you're not opposed to constantly letting others see you hold this thing you might be able to catch up on some reading. It looks like the 811 is available now for $85, including the gaming dock, stand, and neck strap -- just in case you never wanted a date again.

Sounds like a good idea to me. They should make more devices like this. I'm surprised no one has yet made a home console that supports all the retro consoles such as Master System, MegaDrive (Genesis), Nes, SNes etc. Or better yet why don't Sega and Nintendo make proper emulators for the Xbox/360 and the PS2/3 and let us buy games for them online like Sony has done with PS1 games. I mean Sega must have already written an emulator for their recent compilation release.
strider_mt2k @ Sep 23rd 2007 7:18AM
The device is unsightly, yes, but it does some cool stuff.
-and for the folks that are into it there are about a zillion old titles that still hold up today for those older platforms, if you can find the ROM images, which is of even MORE dubious legality.
So it's fun of dubious legality, which for some folks actually increases the fun.
Fun!

Or get a PSP, which is smaller, and can emulate more consoles, can play music, browse the web, play movies, and most surprisingly can alsoplay PSP games. Its also one of the easiest consoles to hack..
Sneakz @ Sep 23rd 2007 8:47AM
For once, getting a PSP actually made sense. But only in that context.
Fank @ Sep 23rd 2007 8:26AM
That's "Game Boy". Nub.

I have a PSP with hundreds of NES, GENESIS, TURBO GRAPHYX16 and SUPER NES games on it that I got from Chinatown here in NYC.
I love it...I wouldn't part with it.
The thing is, you are violating so many intellectual property laws by knowingly buying one of these. And the Chinese don't care at all.
I lived in ShangHai and Hang Zhou in the PRC and I saw them copy Xbox and PS2 games (now 360 and PS3) games like it was NOTHING.
They recieve defective Xbox and PS3 units and they mod them so they can play bootlegged games as these systems are not sold in most Chinese department stores over there (unlike in America) due to trade and tariff restrictions.
The Chinese have hundreds of modded emulation devices but unless you buy them in China using Yuan, you're getting overcharged on em.

It looks like the NGage's slightly more useful cousin. Also, I can't imagine trying to play anything while holding it in that "dock," it looks terribly awkward.
Fred @ Sep 23rd 2007 10:40AM
It doesn't look like that bad an idea, and honestly if you're in the market for a "PMP" that will play NES, Game Boy, Genesis, etc. Then you probably aren't dating much already. It looks pretty hard to use though.
Mindfield @ Sep 23rd 2007 10:46AM
Meh. It's fugly, Sure, it emulates a number of systems, and it's cheap, but I'd still rather get a GP2x, which does more than this thing does, even if it is more expensive.
Bad Cyborg @ Sep 23rd 2007 5:08PM
One man's fugly may be another man's fuckalicious. Or would you rather it look something like this? http://cell-phone.gadget-review.net/images/Nokia-7610.jpg
No, that one is the result of overreaching ambition. I mean good gawd, can you imagine the kind of drugs you have to take to come up with that monster? One should never try too hard.
JeffDM @ Sep 24th 2007 1:48AM
Bad Cyborg; I'll go with the fugly on this Chinavasion. At least that example Nokia is compact, this Chinavasion is anything but. First, start with not making it a brick. In their case, first make it a single piece brick and not a two-piece brick. The only thing this thing I see this has going for it is price, and I suppose that's enough for the Chinese market and in developing countries.
yelohbird @ Sep 23rd 2007 11:28AM
it's chinavasion
SteveMB @ Sep 23rd 2007 12:25PM
Just so you know it's chinavasion, not chinavasion. If you look around there site you can find one of those watches that plays videos.
TA @ Sep 23rd 2007 1:52PM
It's chinavasion not chinavision?

"...is going to the gusto..."
ugh. i hate that engadget writers think that they have to be cute and use all of these little phrases, but especially when they use them improperly. it's: go FOR the gusto. but either way, you clearly don't know what it means, so don't use the phrase, mkay?
seriously, it's just poor journalism.
JeffDM @ Sep 24th 2007 2:02AM
Preach on! There are too many popular blogs that pretend to be journalist sites, and this is doubly so for all of AOL's blogs that I've read. I know people make mistakes, but it seems like they are trying to be what they aren't and look amateurish in the process.
