Motorola shows off its first consumer WiMAX modem
The WiMAX train is starting to pick up steam -- and with services like Sprint's XOHM scheduled to launch in the next year, we're expecting to see a lot more devices like Motorola's CPEi 300 WiMAX modem hit shelves. The company is showing off the wireless broadband modem at the WiMAX World conference in Chicago this week, and seems bullish about targeting the "unserved or underserved" with the device. The unit features one "data port" (we're guessing Ethernet) and two RJ-11 ports for VoIP access, and runs on the 802.16e "Mobile WiMAX" standard. We'd love to know when we'll be able to buy this thing and how much it's going to cost -- or even just what it looks like -- but it looks like we'll have to wait a bit to find out more.[Via TG Daily]

Have you tried Sprint or Verizon's EV-DO?

Yea they are weak also. To be honest none of them are worth the hype. If you can't get a WiFi spot and are really desperate OK but otherwisw for-get-about-it.

Oh please... Sprint's Rev A card gets consistent 1.5 Mbps in NYC. The day XOHM (sp?) goes live I am buying in.

I sell the sprint usb modems at Radio Shack, and having set them up they are about 2 or 3 times faster than dial up, but not really that fast for $60+ a month.

My dad lives in SD and his EV-DO (Verizon) is great. He even has a 802.11b router and its fast enough to share the connection with 3 users, but none of us are downloading HD movies or anything like that.
Cingular's EDGE was really really weak, to the point of being useless. Their 3g service is much better.
Its always good to have multiple choices for service however, I look forward to WIMAX also.

Since our broadband was down today I tried playing TF2 today on my laptop using my Verizon cellphone as an EVDO modem, with no problems. Frankly I was amazed, my pingtimes and latency were very good considering, and gameplay was as smooth as a cable modem.

In Pakistan Wateen Telecom ( www. wateen.com ) has launched their WIFI services , can't say about the service as yet their full fledge launch will be in October , on soft launch they are providing their services to businesses at USD 600 for installation and USD 250 / month for 512kbps service , currently DSL is for USD 70 for installation and USD 35 for 256kbps service so Wimax has a long way to go to reduce the prices
