Nokia's next internet tablet hits the FCC
For all you Nokia fanatics waiting for the next-gen follow up to the beloved N800 internet tablet, your journey may be at its end. According to reports dot-dashed into the Engadget offices via a morse-code squawking carrier pigeon, the latest and greatest as-yet-unnamed (but for now called LJPRX-44) non-phone, non-computer device may be heading into your sweaty hands before long. There's not much to glean from the multifarious FCC filings, unless you're a glutton for punishment or an extremely determined wavelength-modulation-test-fan, save that the device will have both WiFi and Bluetooth, and should be the same general size and shape as the N800. Feast your eyes on the labeling above, and if you're really jonesing for some good-old FCC fun, hit the read link.

Hmmm.... A bit of sleuthing, judging from the font size of the FCC sticker, I estimate the size of this new tablet not much bigger than the N8000, with a 0.0032 probability of error (trust me), and it is made in Korea, not North Korea that is... They make nukes there.
Alan Partridge @ Sep 25th 2007 7:59PM
They wish!
daniel @ Sep 26th 2007 2:07AM
I don't think you need to 'clarify' what part of Korea it is- no one's that stupid or ignorant.
Scott @ Sep 26th 2007 4:29AM
@daniel
You haven't watched Jay Leno interview people on the street.
daniel @ Sep 26th 2007 8:03AM
well i don't live in the US so i guess it's different over there. you guys *are* famous for being somewhat ignorant of the world
john @ Sep 25th 2007 7:24PM
Probably better than the ipod touch. At least Nokia won't threaten to brick it!
Javi0084 @ Sep 25th 2007 7:28PM
I have the 770 tablet and I like it, except that I can't watch flash video on it.
David Clark @ Sep 25th 2007 7:32PM
I'll take my chances with the ipod touch. I'm willing to bet more apps are developed for the touch in one month than will ever be developed for the Nokia.
andi @ Sep 25th 2007 7:33PM
there are already lots for the nokia ;) ...
Clark Kent @ Sep 25th 2007 8:58PM
You are on! what are we betting on?
iPod touch is essentially the same as iPhone, which means close to zero 3rd party software.
You will surely be able to _buy_ more accessories, but programs? Nah. There are already hundreds of programs ported to the Maemo. A month is pretty short time to get a few hundred programs working on the iPod Touch, assuming Apple ever even allows 3rd party programs on that platform.
paul @ Sep 26th 2007 12:53AM
lol! You've *got* to be kidding me! Just take a look at http://downloads.maemo.org/ and see how many apps are available for the Nokia internet tablet(s).
Here's a few things I can do with my N700:
I can stream media to the Nokia from my PC (MediaStreamer);
I can pair up a bluetooth GPS receiver and use it as a GPS device (MaemoMapper);
I can play doom/dungeon master/bejewelled/civilisation/sudoku/etc. (for free - legally);
I can tune my guitar;
I can read PDFs/DVIs/postscript/tex (and a ton of eBook formats - FBReader and Evince);
And it'll do the things an iPod Touch will do:
I can listen to music & watch videos (Canola, MPlayer);
I can use it as a digital photo frame/album;
I can surf the web;
And that is just a very limited selection of what's available.
David Clark @ Sep 26th 2007 8:00AM
I didn't realize how many apps were available for the Nokia, however there are still a ton for the iphone/touch considering the platform has only been pseudo-open for a few months.
And forget legal. I've lost that status a long time ago.
riggs @ Sep 26th 2007 9:01AM
i truly hope youre kidding.
David Clark @ Sep 26th 2007 11:03AM
Seems like a great device.. With the pricing and availability, I think I'm happy with my ipod order, though.
For anyone interested in some "preliminary" knowledge of the device: http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/8262.html
Jerry @ Sep 25th 2007 7:45PM
I have a 770, but never got an 800. The style of it just didn't appeal to me, and my 770 wan't getting a lot of use at the time.
But just in this last month I've picked up using my 770 again, and news of people getting KDE running on it piqued my interest. Now I find this simple outline with a image of a sticker has got me a bit excited. I can't wait to see more on this one.
Anthony @ Sep 25th 2007 7:46PM
I tried the 770. Didn't like it. Browsing was too sluggish & the memory was frequently "full".
The concept was very sound & I loved getting a full VGA on such a small device.
I'll definitely take a look at any new releases.
As for aps: 770 had a ton. It's open source, sort of, so that engenders interest.
Fernando @ Sep 25th 2007 8:29PM
Didn't you guys had a gallery of spy pics of this one some time ago?
Jesse S @ Sep 25th 2007 8:42PM
The bluetooth seems useless...I guess you could use it for GPS, but is there even a Linux version of TomTom or some other navigation software?
Jesse S @ Sep 25th 2007 8:43PM
Oh, and before you say "headphones," bluetooth headphones sound worse than ipod earbuds.
I just had a thought though, bluetooth tethering?
My Car Knee @ Sep 25th 2007 9:05PM
bluetooth keyboard?
file transfer (e.g. from bluetooth-cameras or phones)?
remote controlling PC's?
bluetooth printer? (not sure about this one...)
internet connection? (if you don't have wi-fi)
hmm... pretty much anything people use bluetooth for?
BT is dog slow, but it's pretty ubiquitous these days.
Jesse S @ Sep 25th 2007 9:11PM
Thanks. I wasn't being sarcastic, I just didn't really realize...things...(Sleep deprived, at the moment.)
gjp303 @ Sep 25th 2007 9:42PM

C'mon you are scaring us. Get some sleep. Didn't you state that you were sleep deprived before. The Engadget community cares about you and they want to know that you're OK! Please!

Jesse S @ Sep 26th 2007 12:56AM
I've been busy enough that I've gotten about 3 hours of sleep every night for the past month. Why am I reading engadget instead of sleeping? So I don't go crazy. I need some recreation.
Jesse S @ Sep 26th 2007 12:58AM
Is Navicore any good? I've experimented with a few different GPS brands, and so far TomTom has been the most accurate.
theflew @ Sep 26th 2007 11:51AM
Navicore is good, not as good as a dedicated GPS system, but the N800 does alot more than a didicated GPS system. One nice thing about Navicore it has a WIFI hotspots POI DB so every time you're near one it chimes (if you want and you can specify proximity). Good for a WIFI device.
Cesar Cardoso @ Sep 25th 2007 8:44PM
(Disclaimer: I own a 770)
Everybody that had issues with 770 should definitely check out the N800, it's way more polished.
But... where's Wimax? Isn't the next incarnation of N800 headed for Sprint's Motorola-esque-4-letter-acronym-called Wimax service?
namtastic @ Sep 26th 2007 10:21AM
[Disclaimer: I've owned both]
He's right. :)
BTW: ThoughtFix is "a morse-code squawking carrier pigeon"? Who knew!
Rob Fleming @ Sep 25th 2007 10:30PM
no one has yet mentioned that GPS is tested on the FCC document.
Ian @ Sep 25th 2007 10:59PM
Estimated time to market?
NS @ Sep 25th 2007 11:05PM
I got 770 thru NDA, skip N800. Considering buying ipod touch, but the screen size is small compare to 770. Browsing web /viewing video with ipod touch probably not good. I think I will consider this device if bigger built-in flash memory/hard drive.
theflew @ Sep 26th 2007 11:55AM
N800 currently, as of today will support two 16 GB (32 GB today) SDHC cards. Though it will cost you about ~ $300 for the two 16 GB SDHC cards. Hard drive not required, sucks power and makes devices fragile.
NS @ Sep 26th 2007 6:37PM
I knew that N800 supports SDHC cards but they are not cost effective. I am only looking at the same price range of the new gadgets i.e $399. Flash memory of 8Gb in this device will surely compete with ipod touch. I hope Intel MID linux devices would be out as well in Christmas shopping. I think screen size is important criteria now for PDA users.
Mark D. @ Sep 26th 2007 1:49AM
The battery and charger are different (though it seems like just different versions of the ones used now), but the headset is the same as the current in-line one that the n800 comes with. I sort of hope this is a 2.0 release of the n800 since I just bought one (noooo, curse you, buyer's remorse!) but I'd be glad to see a fresh device in the line so long as they provide something substantial to support and OS releases for the n800 seeing as it's only a year old.
In any case, I hope they return to a black casing. The silver front looks too much like a handheld game system and too little like a tiny computer (not that it detracts from the usage.) Even if it's just a revision for the WiMax support a clean black surface would suit it much better. The possible leaked photo of a silver (metallic, maybe T|E style casing?) looks out of place with current consumer electronics.
PDexter @ Sep 26th 2007 3:44AM
Bah if this just would come before christmas(to shops that is).
Kozzi @ Sep 26th 2007 4:38AM
wohoo I'm glad I waited
roc ingersol @ Sep 26th 2007 10:48AM
i love my n800 and i'd really like to see an n900.
i'd actually love to see a more gaming-friendly design. just throw the back and menu buttons on the right, give them two friends, arranged in gamepad configuration and make them app-programmable. handy shortcuts for all the apps, and hardware buttons for emulators. oh, and a better dpad would be nice.
more than anything the interface needs some cleaning up.
more thumb-friendly, less lag. and a googlegears implementation would be nice, so i could get some decent sync'ing PIM software.
