Toshiba intros WiFi-less Gigabeat T400
While there's still no official word of a North American release of Toshiba's WiFi-packin' Gigabeat T401, it looks like those round these parts can now get their hands on its slightly less-capable counterpart: the WiFi-less Gigabeat T400. Apart from the lack of WiFi, this one looks to be identical to the T401, with it packing 4GB of NAND flash memory, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, and support for WMV video, along with MP3, WMA, WAV and WMA Lossless audio. According to Toshiba, you can also expect about 16 hours of audio playback and 5 hours of video playback from the player's rechargeable battery. It also looks like Toshiba's decided to tone down the color options from the Japanese release, with the player now only available with your choice of blue, pink, or orange trims, each of which will set you back $120.

You haven't picked up on the apparently-dead Portable Media Center interface it's touting...

WTH is wrong with toshiba!!! i remember when i fell into the hype CNET created with their review of MES30V also know as S30 and although bak then the interface (windows portable media center) was delightful to use, the battery life was appalling. I could use that rubbish PMP for half a day without it dying. Not to talk of support..LMAO! there was not even "grain or scratch" given to the PMP. After one firmware update toshiba sent out a few months after it was released, that was it. You were left in the wild to fend for yourself from any problems you might encounter...
Toshiba should stick to their chips, TV and laptops because their attempt on PMPs is basically CRAP!! i would have giving them credit for the interface but it microsoft so they should quit investing their money on such garbage.

I take it none of you realise this is probably going to be the basis for the flash Zune.

So they release a NEW product with less features? That's innovation right there.

Absolutely right - battery life on the harddrive based toshiba was ridiculous. Apparently even though the screen goes blank the device doesn't actually shut off when you stop using it (without pressing the on/off button). Serious design flaw that could easily have been fixed with a firmware update. But like someone said toshiba doesn't support their products...

*pukes* THIS IS THE SUCCESSOR TO THE GIGABEAT S!?!? 4GB!?!? Toshiba, the maker of such fine slim hard drives for iPods and Zunes? 16 hours? A big BLEH for this.

I advise all of you to listen to one of these. I bought one last week. Although it may not have the best features or even close to an acceptable storage capacity, it does what it was designed to do better than just about anything out there; play music. The audio quality coming out of this thing is absolutely superb. I personally like the interface because of its simplistic and bug free navigation; no learning curve whatsoever.
Check out anythingbutipod.com. They don't have a full review up yet (11/13/07), but they confirm what I have experienced.
