A whole slew of sites this morning spilled out info on Gateway's new "One" PC, which Gateway was
teasing us about the other day. Due to be announced tomorrow at Digital Life, the Gateway One is a sleek little all-in-one number, rocking a slot-loading DVD burner, a bunch of inputs and even wall-mounting capabilities. No word on screen size, but it looks spacious enough. The One hosts an easily-replaced hard drive and memory, along with a 5-in-1 card reader. You can score the One in one of three configurations, starting at $1,300 for a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB HDD and Intel X3100 integrated graphics, and ramping on up to the $1,800 unit with a 2GHz processor, 3GB of RAM, 500GB HDD and Mobility Radeon HD 2600 dedicated graphics. The third version splits the difference on specs for $1,500. Apparently there's even a webcam hidden somewhere in the unit, though you couldn't tell it from the pics. There's another shot after the break.

...beat the iMac in chin size.
the jay leno edition
more like the 'fall-over' edition
LOL, from the front it actually looks like my 1st gen black nano. Yup, if I snap it in half it's the top half. Pretty slick but from what i know so far I think I like Sony is better. I guess that's not much of a compliment, but nice to see where they are headed.
"500GB of RAM and Mobility Radeon HD 2600 dedicated graphics."
damn. 500gb of RAM. That's pretty good.
Thanks, sorry about that. Fixed now.
Woohoo!
Who needs Solid State Disks with so much RAM on a graphics card!
It looks almost exactly like the 20th anniversary Macintosh, but with a larger monitor.
Yes, I have the same feeling too.
There are two problems with this computer.
1. You can't easily change the orientation of the screen (swivel along a horizontal axis).
2. The webcam if placed on top of the monitor, it has to be slightly tilted, otherwise, it will be facing upwards a bit.
There are 2 problems with your comment:
1) You have never seen one in person, and are basing your assessment on a couple of pictures.
2) You really think that they would not have considered where to aim the webcam?
oh, and a third
3) You don't word your comments like these are concerns of yours. You word them as if they are facts, which is pretty weak, and is FUD's younger brother.
Personally, I don't care for this at all. I agree about it looking a lot like the 20th anniv. Mac, which was nice at the time, and the chin is HUGE
Go PDubNYC!!! Are you Irish???
500GB or RAM @_@"
???bit?
please correct it...
How long before this story is pulled?
return of the 20th Anniversary Mac
500 Gigs of Ram!?!?!?! Sign me up!
I know your all thinking iMac... but im not allowed to say that cos' an army of anti-apple heads will comment me to death!
Otherwise a nice all-in-one :)
Because all-in-one desktops exists before the Imac?
Well no but i am reffering to the use of aluminium and a big black glossy display - they've not exactly tried to make the all in one unique to the competition. Not saying everything that has a glossy display and aluminium is mac like but you get my drift :)
@Jon
In fact, there was a time when all computers were "all-in-ones"
@Jon:
They sure did: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_128K
All in one AND portable AND not a Mac: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_SX-64
500GB of RAM! woohoo!
vista only supports 4 gigs...what am i gonna do with the other 496 gigs?
64-bit processors can address 17,179,869,184 gigabytes of RAM.
Sell them on ebay
What if you don't like the screen angle?
Gateway's recommended solution is to adjust the height of your chair.
it's adjustable based on the foot in the back.
It looks like it has a roller on the support like the Sony SDM-hs95 series.
or you could bend your neck even more.
the idea is to limit the amount of time you spend in front of the computer screen.
- Doorway
It kinda looks like it would tip over if you poked it.
Don't poke it.
That works.
I think I like the look of the iMac a tad more...
Yes, I agree.
This really looks to me like a copy off the iMac, but that's just me...
Depending on what the screen size turns out to be, it also seems like the iMac may be a better bargain. Starting price of $1,300 with a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo? The iMac starts at $1,199 with a 2.0 GHz part in it.
FUGLY
It's the Jay Leno of iMacs.
Just think, this is probably Gateway's make-it or lose-it deal breaker product. If this product fails, gateway is gone. I am curious to how this will sell, especially at a somewhat affordable approach.
Although I may have to buy me one of those external graphic cards for this puppy.
I really think there should be more comments about the amount of RAM here. Just in case it wasn't funny enough the first five times.
500GB of RAM? WOW!
500GB of RAM? That's AMAZING!
this thing has more ram then st. louis
ha..ha
_>
Than? Got it.
Another correction by a frickin internet teacher, i'm sorry I made a grammatical error. Thanks for correcting me, I hope you will be able to sleep better at night. Here's my hand, you can smack it with a ruler now.
**presents hand...**
idiot
oh well. i got the first one, so it's cool.
the Imac gives better specs for the same price and looks better. However given the fact that OSX sucks...err still nevermind this is a Gateway probably just as bad. If they allow for upgrading parts or make the internals more accessible than the Imac maybe. I am not a fanof all in one units anyways so not for me.
If OSX sucks in your mind, you either are joking or don't use Windows. Otherwise you are simply clueless.
Windows is trash compared to OS X. I use a PC and even I know that.
@Rick
Wow. Getting a little angry there?
I prefer Windows, but I don't get so defensive about Windows when people say it sucks, you just don't have to be so angry. It's just a different method of clicking on folders.
First off Rick ignore all the stuff about the Imac giving a better hardware value than the Gateway like you seem to have.
Secondly I use Linux, Windows(XP and Vista), and OSX on a regular basis. I am not a fan of OSX since it seems like a butchered version of UNIX to me. Linux and XP gets stuff done and it gets it done much faster than a Mac 90% of the time. OSX has some stability issues for me especially when you using programs like Adobe where you look at a screen with multiple languages sometimes when saving a project. It has also just crashed on me several times using Safari. I admit it doesn't crash every day and that usually the issue is taken care of by the next patch it is also the only operating system that has crashed on me since ME. I have also noticed that Macs run very very very slowly once you start filling the Hard Drive to past 80% where both Linux and Windows don't experience a slow down to the same degree. I also feel that Dock is a cluttered mess that either impedes valuable destop space or gets finnicky about reappearing when you hide it. I am not a fan of the maximize button to get the screen to fill only what is visible as it is a broken feature and doesn't maximize enough most of the time. I am not a fan of the menu bar placement for individual programs either although this one of the only times that Macs adhere to Fitts law when running multiple apps 5+ it can be a pain to see which menu are on and which program is active(though I admit this a matter of taste and just a different way to use a PC). The unnecccesary extra mouse clicks to close a program instead of just using the red circle and finally Macs have really poor memory management.
Do macs work yes they do. Will most people use them without issue? Yes they will. Are there benefits to using a Mac yes there are but aside from Final Cut Studio 2 there are none over using Linux and being that I prefer Avid there are really none for me except the 'neer do well Art Institute grad student who throughs a fit on anything not Final Cut and doesn't know there is much better out there.
So for me I see Mac OS as a hindered experience where its strengths lie in I Life and Itunes(which is faster on a Mac than Windows) and Final Cut Pro as well as increased security as far as viruses and worms and trojans go but they are not immune to Malware and the ignorance of many Mac Users almost outweighs that benefit.
So yeah I prefer both Linux and windows to Mac OSX but I also was stating that the Imacs are not only cheaper and come with better hardware knowing gateway the IMacs are probably also designed better....well if you never want to upgrade your HD that is.
From the side, it looked like an iMac killer, then it turned around and proved the end of Gateway.
I actually quite like it, kind of monolithic, especially when turned off I would say.
But why oh why did they add the useless keyboard and mouse!
Agree with you totally on the Monolith look...
I kind of like this, and being a gateway (given that I've never had a problem with their hardware before,) I'd expect it to be an all-around good machine. Might not win a lot of hearts on the price/performance ratio (and lack of easily upgraded graphics would ruin it for me,) but definitely a great alternative to other all-in-ones, like Sony's comparable product (forgot the name,) or the Apple iMac.
As a Mac Fan Boy (whatever that means, but I have been accused of being that before) it is nice to see another company finally compete with Apple on design. The fact is, the insides of Macs and the insides of other PCs are basically the same. So why is it that Apple can make beautiful cases and the other can't.
I am glad a beige box company is making attractive, uncluttered designs. Too bad it is the operating system that this new gateway runs is crap, but that is another posting for another day. Maybe tomorrow.
Oh, I dunno. Everybody says how beautiful Macs are, but to me they tend to look really, really dated, really, really fast.
I am an Apple Certified Tech and through I admit that apples look nice, That nice look comes at a high price. It takes at least an hour to replace the Hard Drive in the current model I-Mac. This design looks VERY nice and considering ALOT of people would want to upgrade the HD this is a perfect all-in-one design for the PC front.
Aparently, this will have SoundVu (the screen is the stereo speaker) from NXT (www.nxtsound.com) as previous found in the Japanese NEC Valuestar all-in-one PCs. A first outside Japan, should be interesting to see some reviews of how it sounds...
i'm starting to feel like style is destroying a lot of ergonomics for the sake of looking minimal :)
i'm all for style but still ...
Well, I'm not going to be too harsh on it because it's really a step in the right direction for all-in-one Windows boxes. If I was going to go back to Windows I'd look at this before a Dell that's for sure. But I will be very curious to see this in person. Apple's computers are more than just nice design. The fit and finish is important as well as the materials used. If this turns out to be just a bunch of cheap, colored, hollow feeling plastic, then they still have a ways to go. But again, it looks nice and it should raise the bar for the other clone makers.
i personally really don't like all in one machines. say you want to upgrade monitors. well then, that sucks for you. or, say 1 component gives out. then you have to get a whole new machine. it's ok for laptops, since they're designed to move, but for desktops, which generally stay in one place it's pointless and just bumps up the price.
I'll be excited to see one in person, oh wait, there's no where to go see on that I know of. I must admit that this is the best looking Gateway I've ever seen. Sadly the bar was set so low to begin with.
Don't taunt Happy Fun Gateway.
I have an older Gateway all-in-one media PC. Works OK too bad they used a small power supply. The power supply burns it's self out about every 12-18 months of use. It is a very specific power supply that only gateway makes. It takes a bit of work find a replacement.
Bahhhh...
Happy, now theres more sheep.
What the heck??? That was suppost to be a reply to the comment about the RAM jokes...
I don't have a problem with the "chin", if you want an all-in-one PC, all that extra hardware's gotta somewhere, and it's not gonna be the keyboard. I think it looks better than the iMac and it has a normal keyboard, so that's a plus. The only thing that kills it for me is the thick border around the screen - I understand the "chin" but why couldn't they keep that border to a minimum, preferably barely even there.
couldn't one calculate the screen size based off the DVD slot? my math sucks
Assuming dvd slot is 6'' making the screen about 12''x 12'' i would guess it the one pictured is about 15.4'' thinking that they would use avail laptop monitors for it, so maybe the upper end will have 17.what ever size screen.
I read that it's 19 inch.
I'm an Apple user through and through, but I actually like this Gateway model. I wouldn't buy one, because it won't run Mac OS X, but I must commend Gateway for making a computer that is roughly price competitive with the iMac, and has a few things going for it that the iMac lacks (like the card reader, and having all your cords plug into the power adapter so that you don't mar the look of the main computer. Also, if the hard drive is easily replaceable, that's a major plus over the closed iMac design.
I doubt the Gateway One will be a homerun product, but at least they tried, and came up with a few interesting innovations.
Any color options?
I'm surprised no one picked up on the "slower Windows PC costing MORE than a Mac" angle. A 24" iMac @ 2.4ghz costs the same as the top of the line Gateway One @ 2ghz. While the low end 20" iMac @ 2ghz costs LESS than the low end One @ 1.5ghz. Why is it that no one comments on that?
It may be slower but both low end and high end Gateways has more RAM than the Imacs you mentioned. The low end also has a bigger harddrive.
Loading up the low end iMac with 2gb RAM and 320gb HDD bumps it up to $1398. Given the low end One has integrated graphics vs. the iMac with HD 2400 XT, the extra $98 is not bad. Also, it remains to be seen if the One has 802.11n and bluetooth (I assume it does given the wireless keyboard/mouse pic). Also, it's not immediate apparent from the pics whether the One is widescreen.
All of this, of course, is academic until the unveiling. (-1 for obviousness)
The $1,800 model isn't even equal (processor-wise) to the iMac. According to the links, the processor used has 2MB L2 cache compared to the 4MB on the iMac.
It looks decent, but the ridiculously huge chin (seriously, it looks like it takes up approx. 1/3 of the front side) and the fact that it's pricier than an Apple product ruins it.
Jim, I have the same Gateway 610 Media Center. My first and last Gateway! Still haven't bothered to replace the power supply, which died about 2 days after the warranty expired.
It's interesting how it seems to be more expensive than the iMac..
This article says: $1,300 for a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo processor
When the 20" iMac 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo is $1,199.00
Yes the gw seems to have more RAM, but still.. I could run both Mac and Windows on the iMac at least.
I didn't take into consideration the angle of the camera shot for the width. but considering the angle of the slot is the same as the screen the height would be of the same proportion. Id stake my unknown reputation on being a somewhat accurate guestimation.
and people bashed the new iMac design? Its a beauty compared to this.
Having worked at the first Apple Authorised Service Provide in Europe (and probably the best in the UK), I know from the skills of the two workshop guys and from my own lesser skill that you shouldn't be a Apple Certified tech if it takes you an hour to change an iMac hard drive. No job in the world should take as long as that given that you have all the parts and tools to hand.
Stop with the copy-pasta. If it takes you over an hour to replace an iMac hard-drive, then you must suffer from some sort of medical condition... maybe parkinsons or narcolepsy. I recently replaced the drive in my new iMac with a larger unit in about 15 minutes.
Its not brain surgery. Also, if you are going to post the same exact thing, TWICE, in the same article. then at least keep the same username to make it seem, like maybe, it was a mistake.
are you all dumb. 500GB of ram. HAHA its 500GB of hard drive space not ram.
This thing is a rip anyway, a iMac is cheaper and faster, and looks alot better.
Ohhhh i thought wrong, it IS still funny the 23rd time someone posts that!!!
not too bad looking for a gateway, but i still don't like it
I am in to this thing,
plus it does away with that huge and fugly apple logo~
Nice of Gateway to do something like this just after they got purchased aby Acer...
More like the 'fall-over' edition.
lol. A wanna be iMac....tis tis tis
ekwmin: I think it looks more like the new nano.
Also, I made this iPod-Gateway hybrid mutant child.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/1461/gatewayone1km3.png
I know. It looks like an iPhone PC. I think the bottom half of the screen will hold the built in camera and cams these days have that technology where it follows your movement. So it may work. I think they will unveil some cool extras on the lower chin (?) of this PC that will surprise us tomorrow. Guess we have to wait and see.
iMac killer if they drop the price to $699 for the base model.
Huh. Two different "Apple Certified Techs" posting the exact same FUD. Who seem to think that "iMac" has a dash in it.
Somebody needs to see to their bots.
Well bests there last attempts http://www.gateway.com/programs/profile6/
My 20" g5 died for a second time (w/ 2 months applecare left) so maybe the next version all in on will be out by the next time my logic board craps out.
Oh no, this is the 610 Media Center ALL over again.
*shoots self*
Seriously people, don't even think about buying an AIO Gateway. Go buy yourself a nice Dell, heck I'd rather turn Amish than use another Gateway.
I'm with rudebo on this. Style and processing speed are nice, but you're going to be cursing yourselves and PC makers for not taking better care of your hands by way of ergonomically right keyboards and mice. The carpal tunnel specialists are just waiting for you and dreaming of the island they will buy. I'm using a flat keyboard...but it'll be my last. Wake up PC makers and aftermarket manufacturers.
that mouse has ASS written all over it.
jay leno edition!!.....?what gizmodo?
Looks better than Dell's at least. However, there are 3 things
- I don't think U can tilt the screen as effortless as the iMac
- The price is not as competitive as iMac
- Keyboard, and the computer body is not as SEXY as the iMac (the way the iMac design was that if U look at it side way, U would be fooled by its thickness. The back is thicker than the side, just like my Samsung SyncMaster 150 Mp LCD TV)
I like the One for the first 10 seconds, but then, it makes me like the new iMac more.
Nice try Gateway.
The design isn't bad but, its still a PC, still 99% going to run windows. BUT HEY the windows bluescreens have to look AWESOME on it. Might forget it caused a fatal error and died.
