With yesterday's
leak, Gateway's press conference was a bit short on surprise this morning, but the Gateway One is indeed official, and it really doesn't look half bad. The one mystery left was the screen, which turns out to be a 1400 x 900 19-incher, which feels a bit small in this day and age, but leaves the One's footprint at an acceptable size. Other niceties include dual easy-swap hard drive slots accessed by lifting off the back cover of the computer, and adjustable tilt through a stand in the back. The included mouse, keyboard and remote are all wireless and pre-synced with the computer, while the web-cam is a USB add-on accessory which comes in the box and can be perched up top, and the top-end One comes with a USB TV tuner as well. Otherwise the specs are as
expected, with prices ranging from $1,300 to $1,800 and late October availability. Check out our gallery for some in the wild pictures.
one thing i haven't noticed anyone mentioning is the i/o ports built into the adapter. seems like a really ingenious idea to keep your peripheral cables out of sight below the desk. is this unique? or have others done it before? also, i'm a bit unclear as to how the invisible speaker system works. any takers?
Since there are no power cords present in the photos are they implying that this thing has wireless power?
"whoever designed that other Gateway all -in-one iMac wannabe about 4 or 5 years ago should be taken out back and beaten with stick"
Sorry, it was just last year that they were still making the ugliest computer in the world.... the "Profile Series"
http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/23/gateways-profile-6-desktop-offers-lots-of-expansion-not-so-muc/
Shit that thing is glossy, even the chin.
Reads on the package: Solitary confinement cell with no windows required.
kinda pricey (especially considering if you want to play any games your pretty much stuck with the most expensive one) but I have to admit it doesn't look all that bad. I wouldn't call it a work of art or anything though.
I learned my lesson buying slim/compact PCs already though, Its pretty much impossible to upgrade anything >_<
But with a computer that looks like this you could always use it as just a TV/DVD Player and everything when the specs where too out of date, and hey look it browses the web with convenient wireless accessories.
This is a very clear example of Apple's influence in the world of computer design. I don't think that's bad. It's a very nice looking computer, and the specs are OK, I don't think it's a true "all-in-one" if you're putting your ports, etc. on an external brick (that's cheating) but it certainly is pretty. But the thing to remember is that it's still a Gateway and it's still just a PC. The other side of the coin is that Apple has great software to complement the good design. These poor bastards are still stuck with Windows.
Um, it's not cheating, it's smart(er than iMac) design. The only things you would plug into the brick are things that you will leave plugged in, things like ethernet cables, usb dongles, etc. I don't know about you, but those are things that I'd rather not have sticking out the back of my iMac and taking up the ports. And speaking of which, am I the only one who wants to be able to SEE the ports when I have to plug something in? That's the one thing about the iMac that bugs me on a daily basis.
I'm no pc/mac fanboy/hater, just being honest.
I think I am going to snap if people don't stop talking about Apple for every single product ever created. Gateway, one of the first major PC manufacturers, is making an attempt at getting back into the market and all people can do is squabble over the stupid iMac. Its a nice looking machine - stop looking at digg 24 hours a day.
Oh... can you imagine the fingerprints? This compy is just calling for you to touch it.
I'm not a PC fan but I'll be honest and say that I'd do this thing if it was softer ;) You know what would look nice next to one of these? one of those sexy black samsung printers that are being sold exclusively on the apple website.
Clearly an attempt to compete with the iMac.
Even the pictures have the Apple feeling with the reflective effects.
It's not an ugly or bad idea computer, it's just an imitation of Apple's original concepts, which brought them to be an innovative company in terms of design and usability.
And yeah, the One is stuck with Windows VS the iMac which offers OS X or Windows.
Wouldn't it be great if when you took a picture of your computer it looked as good as tech promo shots......they always have that cool line of light going across it
It's like an ass-heavy iMac. And this coming from a person that used to count Gateway as a client of mine. Meh... No thanks.
I think it improved on the iMac because it doesn't have the club foot base and lacks the fugly Apple logo.
It is good to see Gateway back with this offering. Now they just need to lower the base unit to $999 and they sell millions.
Bravo, Gateway... you got the style memo... finally! This is a really attractive machine and your designers have done well. Not a knock off of anybody else's work (no, I'm not just talking that company from Cupertino, either) and has great lines. Way to go. :)
I gues the designer was an apple fan...
Anyway, iMac design has a bit more:
- more adjustable stand
- smaller?
- faster
- webcam build-in !!!
- no power/cable brick you have to hide
- OSX and iLife
- ....
I think its great someone is trying to compete with Apple. Its like the Zune of computers, close but not quite there. I am sure they will announce a bigger screen in the future and its a nice option if you absolutely need a windows machine. Price point should be around $900. This would be Acers first Gateway after the buyout of the company so it is interesting to see sales. Still Apple makes a far better product for a great price and excellent customer service. And by the number of Apple related posts it is obvious that the company is influencing the competition and there is nothing wrong with that.

Yes, it copies the iMac. Yes, it's expensive. Yes, it looks nice. The reality? There is a reason Apple put the iMac on a decent sized stand.
One of the biggest complains about the look of the iMacs is being totally overlooked here: the chin. If comparisons are to be made, compare the height of that chin on the gateway, it's HUGE!!
Anyone think that the location of the optical drive will be annoying? I'm just thinking about all the crap on my desk I'd have to move to insert a CD (guess I should clean my desk). The clean illusion will also vanish when you fill up the ports along the side. A step in the right direction, but I'm not sure if this computer was designed for the user or just designed to look nice on a desk.
This is another area where people misunderstand Apple by thinking their products are just "pretty". Pretty they may be, but they tend to design with an actual user in mind. (yes there have been some exceptions - the old hockey puck mouse, anyone. awful.)
But overall, gateway should be commended for giving a damn.
No one has mentioned yet that Gateway bought eMachines, makers of the eOne, which had to be discontinued after being sued by Apple because of its uncanny similarities to the iMac: http://www.answers.com/topic/emachines?cat=technology
I'm dying to know - is it battery powered, or solar?
Because not a single photo shows a power cord anywhere in the near vicinity. Shame on you, Gateway!
Wow.. is it possible to have Lauren the Ghoti banned? His entire comment history is just bashing on Apple for no apparent reason.
That is what happens when you spend your life on WOW, have no friends & have never been laidd
I'm more concerned by how unreasonably offensive, inappropriate, and derogatory he is.
Almost something I would put in my house until I saw the front and the big clunky COW BOX LOGO... seriously gateway if you're going to go high end, you're going to need brand identity to match.
What, country folk & cows doesn't say "high end" to you?
agreed. even faking it without buying an Alienware or Voodoo would be smart, just a cleaner higher-end logo/division for these kinds of products.
As for all the Apple comparisons, of course it should be compared, they are both similar, and both available. Whether or not one copies the other or one copies an iPod or one copies something done 10 years ago - hardly matters.
Is it a good value? Do you like it? Is it worth it to you?
I like it, although I'd never buy an All-In-One, too limiting. Give me a tower, or give me a completely component-based system. I'd rather buy a new sleek keyboard and a new sleek monitor, then run a (gasp) cable down to my box.
still doesn't beat my friend's old monorail computer ( http://www.armory.com/~vern/toys/Monorail.htm )
This thing looks HORRID! ...I wouldnt buy it if it was the last PC on earth!! :S its disgusting looking
First off: I'm a Windows admin and I've disliked Apple for a long time. I've respected them for their design elegance, but Apple fans drive me insane.
I give Gateway full marks for putting out a nice design. However, fighting over how to spin Gateway's intent is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is this: if you're going to design a knock-off of a Prada handbag, it REALLY helps to sell it cheaper than the original.
Additionally, the machine will come with Vista. (So?) Well... is Vista an OS X knock-off? Yeeees, yeees, yes. Is the One an iMac knock-off? Yeeees yes. So if my machine looks like a Mac, and it drives like a Mac (read: Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah... slogging piece of ^%$#...), why wouldn't I just buy a Mac and get it over with?
...Because I'm worried that my apps won't work? Hell, I have Vista. A lot of my apps ALREADY don't work.
--Megs
TBH I would honestly buy a iMac if i where to buy a machine and had only this and the iMac to chose from, the better spec, I dont need to worry about spyware, adaware etc as much and I can still run windows apps on my mac by using vmware, pararells or even boot camp its not like the consumer has no choice and the large pc stores eg compUSA sell at least one of those. I think it does look a bit like a iMac but the keyboard is butt ugly and yeah its running windows which is why i like apple, they give the consumer a choice and do not force them to go down one route, many educational institutions use windows due to compatibility and people dont always like change so stick with windows anyway back on topic. I thought gateway had gone bust, glad their still around though. It deffinantly looks nice compared to normal PC chassis so thumbs up for this one gateway but yeah a tad expensive, I know for one thing i wont move from my mac pro to it, you can have the best looking chassis all you want but what matters is what is run on it.
As other have said... looks like a Mac...
FYI, here's a detailed spec comparison of the $1,299 Gateway One vs. the base 20" iMac (with $100 in upgrades to make the prices match):
http://www.systemshootouts.org/shootouts/desktop/2007/0927_dt1300.html
Did anyone forget that the first Mac was an all in one? I always see people seem to try to say in things like this like the iMac was the first one and that anything PC before that was first. Apple has been making plenty of all in ones before the iMac. The Bondi blue iMac wasn't the first... and neither was anything from gateway... or even Sony.
That being said I don't think this looks half bad. Only that the "chin" is a bit too big (and I thought the iMac's was big) and I don't like the way the keys on the keyboard look up close.
And don't forget Gateway's reputation for quality and customer service (cough, cough). Add that in, and the deal is sealed!
Wow, it must be tough to be that stupid. Taking into account your comments on my post, and this post I suspect that you are the one with the low IQ. I'll tell you what you go learn to spell, and then talk to me about my IQ.
This is not the first time Gateway has mimicked Apple, anybody remember the Gateway Astro? http://thejournal.com/articles/14905
I thought this article was about the 20th Anniversary Mac when i skimmed the homepage - the thing's such a throwback!
What I can't understand is how Sony gets away with charging more than both Gateway and Apple for a significantly inferior spec'd machine.
Sony's all-in-one runs you $2,049.99 and comes with an inferior chip, hard-drive, graphics processor, RAM, etc.
Maybe they aren't getting away with it and aren't selling any.

I think it looks great. SO THERE.
im sold
Why do I think of Jay Leno when I see this computer?
OMG, finally a GOOD all-in-one computer that will totally not suck, oh wait thats not a Mac!
How can some of you say its not copying mac, i mean its the same fucking layout.
The lack of integrated web cam has been mentioned. But the other pieces of the picture are Apple's built in mic with noise cancelling technology, quicktime .h264 and the amazing streaming technology in iChat that allows:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/theater/ichat.html
No head sets. Just sit back and chat with the people you care about. Quite simply, Windows cannot do this. Full screen. 4 way video. 10 way audio.
So Gateway and the rest can come up with the best designs in the world, but the technology is still lacking.
Waddo
The iMac is a far superior system in aesthetics, value and specs. I don't blame them for copying, it's extremely successful, but a monument to Apple's success is that they always manage to perform by delivering the best product no matter how many people copy them.
