iPhone firmware 1.1.1 released, WiFi Music Store included
What goodies does Apple have in store for us this time around? Quite a few, we'd say! Follow the break for more!
[Thanks, JS]
Update: We deleted installer.app on ours and kicked off the update, things are taking a while but no obvious problems yet. Stay tuned.
Update 2: Success! The phone's restarting now.
Update 3: WiFi Music Store, check. New calculator icon to match the iPod touch, check. Phone had to be reactivated.
Update 4: We're hearing numerous reports of "Incorrect SIM" errors on unlocked iPhones after the update -- user beware!

Update to my comment last night. I just came from the apple store. They had to replace my iPhone as it was stuck in restore mode. Leaving me unable to use the phone. They put my AT&T card in a new iPone and I was on my way in 10 minute. :)
The replacement iPhone did same thing only second error code number is now 1603. I tried restore 3 time now no luck.
I just returned from the Apple store. I took my iMac in with the second iPhone and the Genius trashed the original download of 1.1.1 and started over. The second iPhone restored and cynked as was suppose to. He felt apparently the first download was corrupt. Now my iPhone works fine.
One more comment, they allowed me the $100.00 credit off a Nano today only after I showed them my iPhone and sent a text message to myself in front of salesman, which gave a code number they require to get the credit. Since I had bought 2 iPhones back when they first came out, I ask why they would not allow the other $100.00 credit off the other phone on the Nano purchase. He said I have to show them the phone and it has to be registered (the only way to receive a text message) and receive a text message number to get the other credit. I gave the other phone to my daughter who hates AT&T and won't register it with AT&T. The salesman says there is no way to get the credit without registering. I had not read that before :(
I am not sure this is a new feature from the firmware update or not. I noticed when sending an email if you tap and hold on a letter for 2 seconds if the letter has more than one option for insertion you'll receive a popup to input the other choices. For instance tap and hold the "i" character you get the normal "i" option and 4 others... This also shows itself in SMS.
If you put custom ringtons via- iBrikr or anything else. DONT GO TO SETTINGS-SOUNDS and tap on your ringtone because it will erase it. If you decide to change your cheap non itunes ringtone for another it'll erase them all.
You wont die if you still have "Gimme More" on your phone instead of some other britney song.
BTW. If your contacts have custom ringtones they'll stay there- just as long as you dont try to change them.
please help!
i have bought Iphone with the software 1.0.0 like 1 week ago.
Can i update it to 1.0.2. and undergo the same procedure as it used to be before with iUnlock? Or i will have as well wait unil 1.1.1 firm will be broken?
Thank you!
1.1.1 has been broken. Do a google search for Installer App (AppTapp).
can anyone tell me if they are able to purchase any music from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. it does not seems to work.
Also Support for TV Out does not work, and Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape does not work!
pelase try these new features and let me know if any of it is NOT JUST FOR SHOW.
So are there any additional details on the original post?
It would seem there are 3 categories to the 1.1.1 firmware release vs 3rd party hacks:
1. Sim Card / Non At&t carrier hacks
2. Installer.App Hack
3. Other 'Jail-Break' Hacks
From various reading online, and 1 real life confirmation, it would seem there is a miss communication in the effect of the 1.1.1 firmware release has. Specificly in that all post 1.1.1 issues are just being lumped into one category of the phone being modified/hacked.
I fall under #2, having installed the Installer.App Hack. It is my understanding that if you have gone this route that your upgrade will be successful (may require re-install) as long as you remove Installer.App. I have also spoken with an individual who was successful in their upgrade to 1.1.1 under this scenario.
Can this be confirmed?
Why are there not more posts which more clearly identify the 'hack' scenarios, and set the record straight? It would seem there is a BIG mis conception as to this firmwares effects on those who have 'hacked' their iphone.
I cant believe my post didnt spark any reply.
To further answer my own question, I upgraded to 1.1.1 just fine. It was a little hairy and almost didnt look as though it would work. But, in the end everything was fine.
Agian, I fell under 2. Installer.App Hack.
I was forced to restore the iPhone to get 1.1.1 on it, but since I had synched first, nothing was lost. When you sync with iTunes it stores all of your contacts, text messages ect. The only thing it doesnt do is save pics taken on the iPhone. So just make sure you copy those off before you attempt the install.
I downloaded, within iTunes, 1.1.1. Ran it, which forced my iPhone to go into recovery mode. I ran the restore through iTunes, which took a couple of tries even. I even had to restart once to get it to work fully.
1.1.1 installed with not problems, I re-sync'ed my phone from the itunes backup and was good to go.
I love how people are making such a big deal about this all over the internet without stopping to think for a second. Here's what happens when you stop and think:
Apple always comes up with a solution that benefits the c u s t o m e r.
Apple computers are made with the intention of fully arming the customer with everything he or she needs in a computer. Apple iPods are made to give their customers the best experience and options in buying an MP3 player whether its about size, money, or even color. Apple iPhones are made to give the customer the most cutting edge technology not only in their hands, but in their phone. All of these things revolve around the customer, not the ease of creation, or the cost benefit (otherwise they'd be made of cheap materials or software and be cheaper). Apple will always be for the customer. Steve jobs had every right NOT to give iPhone buyers who bought the 600 dollar phone a 100 dollar shopping spree to an apple store, because he's right... new technology is e x p e n s i v e... and will at some point come down in price. That doesn't make your situation special, it means your an ignorant fool who shouldn't be sticking your nose into technology. YET, he received a lot of feedback from this, and took care of his customers. 100 dollars for your whining because you are a impulse shopper. Congrats.
I'm sure the apple big shots are/or have been recently in a conference room at apple headquaters to talk about this recent shock to their loyal customers, and I'm sure the result of the meeting was as follows:
"Everyone take a week and come up with a solution that benefits both our customers and our partners (i.e. at&t)and meet here same time same place next week to discuss it."
I'm willing to bet they are already working on something for at least 3rd party apps. As for the unlocks..deal with it. If there was no iPhone unlock...this would have never happened. You screwed it up for all of us just to save some money and prove that your a "big shot geek." Congrats. We all hate you now.
