Dell gets official with webcam-packing SP2008WFP monitor
Not that it'll come as much of a surprise to anyone that followed our week o' Dell scoops, but the company has now finally gotten official with its 20-inch SP2008WFP monitor, which is particularly notable for inclusion of a built-in webcam. That cam is of the 2.0 megapixel variety, and also includes a built-in microphone to let you get in some videoconferencing with minimal clutter. Otherwise, you can expect some pretty solid specs across the board, including a 1680 x 1050 resolution, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, a 2 ms response time, a 300cd/m2 brightness rating, and both VGA and DVI ports (with HDCP), not to mention four USB 2.0 ports. One thing we didn't know before was the price, which has now been revealed to be just $289. No complaints there.

Any information on what panel these will be using? I assume at that price and with those features that it will be a TN panel.
On the Dell site the specs list 160 degree viewing angles so its defiantly a TN film panel. Shame really
Wow~it looks good !
$289?? What's NOT to love about that??
Good job, Dell!
You can get the "cheaper" 20 inch E207WFP for $269 but IMO it's wiser to spend more for the better 8-bit, SIPS panel 2007WFP. Sure it's last gen, but your monitor is arguably the worst component to skimp on.
it looks really good !
what does the 300cd/m2 rating equate to in english?
what is the difference between 300cd/m2 and 350cd/m2.
The difference is 50 cd/m2.
No seriously, I owned the first iteration of this monitor when it first came out like 2 or 3 years back I think. Everybody went nuts for em back then. It is an excellent monitor, has even more features than before and is over $200 cheaper. The only thing it may not have is the ability to swivel from Portrait to Landscape mode. It was really cool but I doubt it was an often used feature by more than just a select few people in a select few scenarios. Get this thing!
Hard to pass up at $289.
Any word on availability?
for $289 this seems to be a good bargain.
That's a pretty good price for a 2MP camera in a20" monitor. My problem however is I don't trust DELL monitor quality. My friend's sister bought a brand new Dell and it came with 17"monitor which suddenly started suffering from dead pixels a few months later. Then entire patches of screen went dead.
I'd only buy DELL's top quality XPS and even then I'd be sure they have a good warranty for the monitor for at least 2 years.
Uhm...all Dell monitors come with a 3 year warranty. That's pretty much an industry standard. Little tip here for anyone buying a computer and you don't purchase the extended warranty (at any company - Dell, HP, etc). Don't buy the monitor with the machine. What happens is they 'bundle' the warranty with the system - so, normally - if you purchase a monitor by itself it comes with a 3 year warranty - if you purchase a monitor with the system - you may get a slight discount - but that means you get whatever warranty the system gets. But from my experience with Dell - you usually get at least a 1 year system warranty with it - so if you had a bad monitor all you had to do was call them and they'd replace it. I, personally, have 2 Dell monitors I purchase - both 20" wide's -- one ultrasharp and one not - and they both are fantastic. No dead pixels - no issues.
Also, for a great deal on Dell.com - go to the refurbished site - they have a lot of great deals there too. Thats where I got both of my monitors (and any Dell computer I've ever bought) and found them to both be great deals and high quality.

$289 before possible coupons! Yummy!
"which has no been revealed to be just $289" ... has NOW been ... great news thu

It's up on the Dell site

Crappy low res.. 1920x or higher plz
Not everyone enjoys having text that requires a magnifying glass to read or sits 6 inches from their 20" monitor. If you need more desktop area, buy 2, thats what I did with the 2005FPW =)
tard.
you won't find a 20" panel running higher than 1680x1050... unless it's some 500 dollar "gaming" panel. most 22" panels even come in this resolution. my solution was to buy 2xE207WFP's.. awesome dual monitor setup using a program called UltraMon. (also cost less than 500 with shipping brand new from dell).
So iF u CoOd mehbee ReSerch stttuff b4 u put ^ ur stoopid opinyon... thnxcksccx.
My 17" LCD does 1920x
Before you start using names the 4th graders call you during recess, try getting a clue. Thanks :)
17" panels with a 1920x1200 native resolution certainly exist (As used by a few different laptops), but I'm yet to ever see or hear of one in a standalone screen panel.
Whats the make and model of your screen assuming it actually exists?
I have a dell 20 inch ultra sharp. I am spoilled by the 178 degree viewing angles. No color fade EVER!! I don't know if I will be able to handle the 160 degree viewing angle. But I do generally like dell monitors.
available on the Dell Germany website for 350 Euro ($490). I guess they are not really serious about selling any there.
Yawn.
My June '07 2007WFP Rev. A04 S-IPS Panel 20" LCD puts this one to shame. TN panel? Hah!
Oh, aren't you just the coolest then.
Cool is my middle name.
Does this monitor offer the same color accuracy as their bigger monitors with HC?
Really poor Dell.
I know the US Dollar is weak right now, but a UK price of £237.35 is just appalling.
That would be an equivalent of $474.00
Quite expensive. Here in Germany the LG 226 WA-WN (22" TN) costs about 300 Euros (http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a255484.html) and is equiped with a HDMI, DVI and VGA port, 3000:1 contrast ratio, 170°/170° viewing angle, 2 ms response time and 300cd/m² brightness rating - and a stylish design.
In comparison the 2008WFP doesn't rock at all.
Au revoir...
Expensive... Ok? The LG you just mentioned is 300 euros... That's 426 dollars. How can you say the Dell is expensive if the LG is over 130 dollars more? BTW that LG can be had here in the States for less than $400. If you think ANYTHING in the States is expensive compared to Euro prices, you're dead wrong. I lived in Germany for almost 2 years, and that place will clean your wallet out.
I am thinking about getting this monitor but wanted to know if it would be good for gaming with PS3.
I have the 2005FPW - I love it except for the response time (fast games leave a splitting effect on the video). I don't happen to know the response time of mine - anyone know how this compares?
Can someone please explain the difference (in semi non-technical terms) between the picture quality on this new SP2008WFP and the older, more expensive UltraSharp 2007WFP? Both say 1680 x 1059 pixels. Both are "high definition". Is it the viewing angle and contrast ratios that make them different? I know the new one has a built-in webcam (nice toy, but I'm more concerned with the actual screen image.) I want the best choice for Photography and Video Editing -- between these 2, which is better and why?
Michael,
I am in the market for the two same panels. Please note that I am scouring the internet like you are for comments, but so far have not been very successful. I believe the major difference is that the older UltraSharp has S-IPS type panel vs. TN panel for the newer SP2008WFP. What I gather from the snide comments around the internet, the S-IPS panel provides greater viewing angles and color consistency than a TN panel will. The S-IPS panel is also more expensive, and generally accepted as the de facto standard for multimedia. (See comment from Edge on Sep 28)
Up to this point I am not speaking from experience, only hearsay.
I have experienced (especially with larger panels) poor viewing angles that are likely the result of TN technology. I have even seen color discrepancy's from left-to-right that stem from the monitor's huge size. (i.e. the viewing angle from the middle of the screen is slightly off from the viewing angle at the edges)
There are two other major features not related to Display that I am also concerned with:
1. Four USB ports vs. two in the older model
2. Height adjustable stand on the older model vs. static height on the new one.
hope this helps.
