HTC's Shift with HSDPA and SnapVue gets a ship date
Although it feels like it's already launched, the HTC Shift with HSDPA data just received its final push out the door today. Nothing new spec-wise to report. It's still the same 7-inch, touch-sensitive "slide-n-tilt" device sporting HTC's new SnapVUE shell -- a Sideshow-like, Windows Mobile-like, information display with its own dedicated processor for instant access to your email, SMS, calendar and contacts without booting into Vista. While the 2 days of SnapVUE standby time is indeed stellar, the 2-hours of Vista juice is generation-one UMPC pathetic. Available "across Europe" starting November for an undisclosed price.

"the 2-hours of Vista juice is generation-one UMPC pathetic"
Vista itself is pathetic. Slap some Ubuntu on there and watch this puppy bark for a whole day

I like Vista, but only 2 hours batery life...
MasterCKO @ Oct 1st 2007 1:26PM
yawn. Way to add nothing to the conversation.

What a shame without WM6! Anyway expansys will have them in stock, Availability: Due Tuesday 6th November, and Handset Only Price: £909.95 (774.43 exc.)
Derek @ Oct 1st 2007 8:16AM
this would be a nice little umpc except for battery life
bob e @ Oct 1st 2007 9:24AM
i hope to snap one of these up if they are under a grand USD...
RIFRAF @ Oct 1st 2007 4:34PM
Not going to happen bob e. It will be around $1500, if not more at the start.

HTC says you can "receive e-mail on the move", I presume, using the Sideshow-ish app, but can you actually receive calls? If you could, the 2 hours battery life wouldn't be too bad...
Angus Hedger @ Oct 1st 2007 11:17AM
Give me something like that, but give it a good 6-12hours battery, and im sold, even better, give it XP at that.
Maby, make it a bit bigger and heavyer and stick a massive battery in it? Even with a big one, im sure it will be FAR smaller and more portable than anything else..
I bet something excally what i want now, will be out in 2 year or so.. when i dont want or need it anymore =/
MasterCKO @ Oct 1st 2007 1:35PM
I'm a bit disappointed with how the Shift turned out. It seemed so promising when I first heard about it, but now, not so much. Oh well.
Victor @ Oct 1st 2007 1:39PM
Where do people get this wishful thinking about battery life? Folks, the physics of batteries haven't changed in a while; and battery power is the limiting factor in alot of portable devices these days. If you can eek out 6-12 hours of power w/o adding another pound (or 1/2 kg) to it, then be my guest....but you would've been a billionaire by now if you could do it anyways.
San @ Oct 1st 2007 2:42PM
Can you use it as a phone? Can i make phone calls and receive them???? Isnt it running WM6????
MAN! Please dont disappoint me :((((
Jon @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:17AM
It isn't WM6, but a stripped down WM6 UI with Sideshow functionality.

Oh my, so many cool gadgets on my RSS feed lately.
RIFRAF @ Oct 1st 2007 4:36PM
not sure who said it won't be, but from the reviews, it loaded with wm6 running on the mobile proc.
Sirocco @ Oct 1st 2007 5:07PM
Angus, what you want already exists. It's called a laptop.
Bill Shaw @ Oct 1st 2007 6:14PM
I've got the HTC Advantage X7500 and it's the business. Was going to get one of these but I'm now really confused . . . the first 'out of the box' video I saw said Vista and WM6, GPS, USB - the lot, but now it sounds different (No WM6 or GPS). I wonder if I'm confusing the Shift wth a different model - X9500 Shangri-La or whether I'm either missing something or have lost the plot completely . . . anyone know?
Mohammed Daouairi @ Nov 22nd 2007 3:10AM
I wante French User Mnual for HTC X9500 Shift
San @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:50PM
awww! stripped down wm6-this is really sad :(((
well, does it have support to be used as a phone for making/receiving calls???
Greg @ Oct 2nd 2007 3:06PM
The battery life could go up if you turn off Aero and glass (I'll probably look bad on an 800x480).
Di @ Dec 22nd 2007 6:19PM
So SnapVUE is a striped down wm6?
Does it have a note application for taking notes?
Can I install Windows mobile applications on it?
