Ok, time for another unscientific reader poll. Did you upgrade your iPhone to v1.1.1? If so, what happened? Tell us all about it (why you did or didn't upgrade, what happened if you did, etc.) in comments. Let it all out, we're here for you.
Bonus side poll ONLY for those whose iPhones were bricked:

Ok ok..enough with the iPhone, apple. Just keep giving us a steady stream of updates..then I wont have to do 3rd party apps.
And move on to make slimmer Macbooks with SSD and no Disk Drive.
OBM @ Oct 1st 2007 1:24AM
I'm being 100% serious in saying this;
WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU UPGRADE THE F/W!? Are these people stupid? These must be the people who, when they were children, put their hands in a fire to see how much it hurt. What did you think would happen after Apple issued the statements about the new FW? And now they're moaning about a bricked phone. I have no sympathy for anyone stupid enough to do it. (this does not include people doing it for research/experiment of course, i.e. a developer, blog team etc etc)
Sal @ Oct 1st 2007 1:38AM
Amen! I feel like I hit a jackpot by having an unlocked, hacked 1.0.2, does everything I need and I can even SSH into it! Why oh why would you "upgrade" when you know that the only upside is the iTunes store and some minor tweaks??
Dimplemonkey @ Oct 1st 2007 1:47AM
I went ahead and upgraded despite the fact that I knew my 3rd party apps would go missing. Why? Because there is so much determination out there to make the iPhone hackable that it won't be long before I'll get my apps back. Just look at the PSPs track record. No one wanted to upgrade their firmware until someone figured out how to have your cake and eat it too. So impatient and whiny, gosh!
iiviip3 @ Oct 1st 2007 2:48AM
I don't think you need to make personal insults to anyone who decided to upgrade. It's not bad patching Safari security holes or being able to hear someone over your speakerphone. 1.1.1 won't be the end-all here, it'll be cracked eventually, but your immaturity will live long past this post.
Mr Angry @ Oct 1st 2007 3:20AM
His comments were impersonal as they referred to a hypothetical group of people.
"your immaturity will live long past this post"
Hahahaha that's the type of quote you get in spam email subject lines lololol, are you for real?
nd @ Oct 1st 2007 11:33AM
because there are tons of unhacked iphones, and some of those are getting bricked...
magicite @ Oct 1st 2007 1:26AM
As of this writing: 6 people answered the first question with a 'bricked' response, yet 32 people have responded to the follow-up, brick-only question. The most popular answer to the second question is currently: "My iPhone was unhacked, but Apple didn't unbrick it for me. Oh the humanity!"
Ballot stuffing, anyone?
phil @ Oct 5th 2007 8:27PM
I haven't answered the poll - but was tempted.
The first day I had my new iPhone, some 6 or so weeks, I did the first 1.0.1 upgrade which bricked by phone and Apple COULDN'T un-brick it... They had to give me a new one!
paloooz @ Oct 1st 2007 1:40AM
Upgraded, then downgraded.

ENGADGET! How can i see the results withouth voting for something? Because i'm not an IPhone user... Please make that optioni available
Xzavier @ Oct 1st 2007 9:40PM
Normally Engadget will let you see the results of the poll's without you voting.
So the question being...
Is this an Engadget poll on an Engadget website or is this an Apple poll on an Engadget website???
MR @ Oct 1st 2007 1:49AM
Who are these liars choosing #3 in question 1? I've been checking the IRC and hackint0sh frequently and NO ONE has been able to unlock and/or install 3rd party apps with FW 1.1.1, yet!!
MR @ Oct 1st 2007 1:51AM
Aww nevermind... Guess I misread that option.
Vanboy @ Oct 1st 2007 1:54AM
My friend and I bought the iPhone when it released. We sold the phones before the price drop, bought the Nokia N95 and couldn't be happier.
Why do people still live with a phone that has so much limitation beside wanting to "show off"?
It is just stupid for people to stay with the iPhone when there's so many phones better out there.
Kyrra @ Oct 1st 2007 2:05AM
What's your definition of "better"?
bombastinator @ Oct 1st 2007 4:56AM
's true. the iPhone would be an amazing device if it would run third party apps, but as it is it is useless to me. I have four critical requirements in a smart phone: a synching full featured PIM(integrated datebook/calander/memos/to do list), decent web browser, an imap mail client, and accounting software that synchs with standard desktop software of some kind. Everyone is going to need something different of course, but it's useful as an example.
Apple's PIM is pretty and has a convenient interface for everything but actually typing, but it is definitely not full featured. The accounting software is beyond primitive, The browser is excelent and the mail client works well, but 50% is still an F.
None of the other phones do accounting and pim well out of the box either, but all of them, with the exception of the sidekick, can install software that performs these tasks just fine. Palm for instance is possibly the weakest in terms of built in software, but quickly becomes one of the strongest, even with it's currently outdated OS, when third party apps are factored in.
The software offered by apple competes well with other phones out of the box, but the other phones are capable of being expanded while the iPhone is not.
As it is I would have to say that it's only really competitive with the sidekick. That is to say a phone for students and mall rats, but nothing a grownup can really use as a business tool.
Tech Citizen @ Oct 13th 2007 3:28AM
better as in: GPS, Guided Navigation, >2MPixels, supports >3g.
Tim Dorr @ Oct 1st 2007 2:11AM
Upgraded to 1.1.1 once the 1.0.2 downgrade instructions were released. As long as I know it's safe to go back, I'm willing to upgrade to help with the unlocking effort.
Alex @ Oct 1st 2007 2:21AM
What is the definition of "bricked" here? I already voted, just curious.
bombastinator @ Oct 1st 2007 4:33AM
"bricked" means your phone does not work at all and has software sufficiently damaged to require a very low level restore. This can sometimes be done at home depending on the particular phone and what is messed up, but more commonly requires a trip to the manufacturer.
They call it bricked because you might as well be holding a brick as your phone since they both work about as well for making calls.

Where is the POLL option for "I don't own or want an iPHONE"?
manfesto @ Oct 1st 2007 2:43AM
It's this one:
"I'm still sick of the iPhone: I really, really am."
Andrew @ Oct 1st 2007 3:40AM
I upgraded firmware since I didn't use 3rd party applications, wound up with a host of technical problems thereafter (i.e. touch screen calibration was way off, 2-6 on key pad not usable) this would normally be a hardware issue but that part of the screen was fine when I used other applications. Called Apple and they were baffled, happened same day I upgraded firmware. My dock icons also were magically being pressed and the icon displayed showing them "pushed down" permanently sometimes when I turned the phone on. Firmware from hell..I swear.
awam @ Oct 1st 2007 4:47AM
I loaded the upgrade, then suddenly a portal opened up and I was sucked in and on the other side was a land of beer and women. Thanks apple!

zzebi @ Oct 1st 2007 8:50AM
There's one thing that everyone forgets about. The new 1.1.1 firmware is way more stable that the previous one and Apple has fixed lots of bugs in it. I couldn't care less about the iTunes store but these fixes made the whole user experience much smoother.
Since I installed the new firmware, there are no more iPod crashes while I'm browsing the web; touch screen navigation in Google Maps has been fixed, no more annoyances there either; and lots of other fixes included.
Sure it would be nice to have 3rd party apps because the web apps are very lame and seriously crippled, but for now, I'm happy with the new firmware.
gerdozain @ Oct 1st 2007 9:57AM
Quit crying. You knew you would most likely end up with a brick and that apple wouldn't fix it. Apple told you about it and you went ahead and hacked your iPhone, updated the firmware, and now you are screwed. So, maybe next time you should either not hack your iPhone, or buy two, one for hacking and testing purposes and one that you can actually use.
Or wait until Apple finally opens it up for all of us to enjoy.
CapWKidd @ Oct 1st 2007 10:01AM
Where is the poll option for (I could never get the update to upload to my phone because when I tried it locked my phone with a yellow triangle saying "connect to iTunes"?
Drew Page @ Oct 1st 2007 3:38PM
This is what happened to me. After I opened iTunes back up, I realized that the only option was to restore the firmware. It meant I would have to re-sync everything, but the 1.1.1 firmware went on with the restore and I am happy. The phone easily reactivated after it finished restoring. I also noticed that the visual voicemail needed my voice mail password in order to connect, which was odd.
I will wait next time Apple does a major update and see what problems crop up before I update.
My iPhone was totally unmodified, no 3rd party apps or unlocks.
Ant @ Oct 1st 2007 10:32AM
It seems to me that the first manufacturer to have a totally open multi-touch device that is well designed and loaded with all the connectivity and upgradeable memory you could want will make a killing. I put my money on Google.
All I want is a 3.5 multi-touch screen (an almost boardless screen, solid as a rock) that I can do what I dam well like with (no contract because you don't need to use it as a phone, but you can if you want). Give it a good battery and a case you can open easily (like a micro Dell PC) with little plug-and-play mod-pod components inside that I can swap, change, upgrade (carefully myself). Let it have a flat speeker behind the screen, normal headphone jack, manual on-off button, little home button on side of the case, arial built into the edge of the screen, pop-out sim tray, good mic, nice little camera maybe.
They’d make a bomb out of the mod-pods people would want. Just buy the basic unit and modify as required.
toodimes @ Oct 1st 2007 10:33AM
NOOOO why would i upgrade the only real difference is the itunes wifi music store and I can illegaly download all the songs i want for free.
Wwhat @ Oct 1st 2007 11:23AM
I wonder if it would work if you went to an apple service center and asked them to update your phone for you (just act dumb), and then when it gets bricked it's they who bricked it and they who need to replace it :]
Tom @ Oct 1st 2007 11:43AM
I upgraded because I travel to Europe every few months for my job, and I need the ability to turn off EDGE data access when roaming internationally so I don't get raped by at&t. These trips are usually one week, so unlocking the phone and using another SIM isn't an option - i need to keep my phone number.
Drew Page @ Oct 1st 2007 3:26PM
My iPhone was totally unmodified, and the update crashed and told me to reconnect to iTunes. I did, and I had no choice but to restore the phone to factory condition. This worked fine and I was able to reactivate with the 1.1.1 update installed, but it was mighty inconvenient (I had to re-sync after the restore). It would have been nice for Apple to bug test the update before releasing it.
pbputt @ Oct 1st 2007 3:41PM
In 1982, Saturday Night Live conducted a poll to see if viewers wanted Comedian Andy Kaufman banned for life from SNL. Kaufman lost....
I think its time for Engadget to do the same with the iPhone.
tgibbs @ Oct 1st 2007 4:13PM
I didn't answer the poll, because my experience did not seem to fit in any category. I tried to upgrade my (stock, unhacked except for one non-apple ringtone) iPhone on my desktop Mac. The upgrade failed with an "unknown error -48". The phone was fine. I then tried to restore the phone to the previous update. This also failed and left my phone in recovery mode. Additional attempts to update it were unsuccessful. I then plugged it into my PowerBook, which restored it and installed the upgrade with no problem. When I switched it back to my desktop, iTunes recognized it and restored from backup.
David @ Oct 1st 2007 4:54PM
As a non iPhone user could anyone tell me why one has a blue background and one black? Every pic til now I have only see it with black. It's almost like the picture is suggesting the "desktop background" color changed. What's the meaning of the pic?
Thanks
Matt @ Oct 1st 2007 5:59PM
I definitely upgraded. Honestly, none of the third party apps are very good. I'm all for having a sofware ecosystem / sdk on the iphone (i've been close to writing a few things already, if only the api was better documented), but frankly, other than lights out none of the applications were worth anything to me. Terminal was cool, not very easy to use and missing a bunch of features, but still convenient.
And, honestly, I feel like the upgrade did add some nice features. Accessing iPod controls while the screen is locked is super useful, the double-click to favorite contacts is nice etc..
Basically, if the apps were better, I wouldn't have upgraded. But the apps will get better, and the new firmware will get hacked at some point, so I don't really feel like I'm missing out on anything right now.
esoterikos @ Oct 2nd 2007 4:04AM
After the new apollo, running simulatenously as I was in a call, made my phone hot to the touch, I was done with the third party apps. I restored and installed the new firmare.

Hey, help me out.
If a buy a brand new in box iphone from the apple store, what firmware does it has? or is pre installed? 1.02 or 1.1.1?
If its 1.02, it means it can be hacked, right? But if its already 1.1.1, then it means its unhackable??? Help! Im planning to get a couple of iphones which I plan to unlock! Thanks.
Shane @ Oct 3rd 2007 3:46PM
my brother figured out how to UNBRICK A BRICKED IPHONE HAHA........
first off you need to click this link and download this file
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3823.20070821.vormd/iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw
after the file finishes downloading you need to unzip the folder and then double click on the icon inside of the folder. This will open up itunes, connect ur phone to itunes and click restore, and then just wait. (the file you downloaded is an older version of apple firmware for the iphone) when its finished restoring your phone will be fixed. FYI, you will have to reload all of ur music and whatnot onto your phone.
if you are still having problems email my brother at brainno911@gmail.com
and he will help you out
PS. i am doing this so u dont lose $400 bucks, and the fact that your iPhone is already broke try this, trust me it works!
AND YES WITH THIS U CAN ALSO CALL, THIS FIXES EVERYTHING MAKES IT LIKE U JUST BOUGHT IT
N @ Oct 4th 2007 11:54PM
I don't think I'll be updating the firmware just yet myself. I could care less about a wifi version of iTunes, as I never use it unless I'm managing my music collection for the phone or my ipod. Any downloading I do (and 99% of that has been free stuff anyway) I can wait until I get home to do. Too many people who have totally stock iPhones have said this update bricked them for me to even deal with the hassle.
cholo-
I bought my iphone on 9-17. It's a 4GB, so this might affect the answer a bit (assuming that price cuts and what not were really because the 4GB didn't sell and therefore this phone might be older stock than what I think), but according to my phone "version: 1.0 (1A543a)"
