Intel's 45nm Yorkfield / Wolfdale CPUs get benchmarked, new rumored release dates
According to a report from TechARP that includes benchmarks of all the chips mentioned, Intel could have nailed a release date for its 45nm Yorkfield and Wolfdale CPUs. Q3 2007 now translates to November 11th, if this report is to be believed, for the launch of the first, the most powerful, and the most expensive -- $999 -- of the Yorkfields: the Core 2 Extreme QX9650, a quad core, 3GHz clocked, 2 x 6MB L2 Cache chip. Later on in January next year will come the Core 2 Quad Q9550, Q9450 and Q9300, with progressively lower clock speeds, and only (hah!) 2 x 3MB of L2 Cache for the Q9300. The Core 2 Duo E8000 series -- the Wolfdales -- will hit around the same time as the slower Yorkfields, hitting speeds of 3.16GHz and L2 Cache sizes of 6MB in the E8500, going down to 2.66GHz in the E8200.[Via Slashdot]

so 3MB of L2 Cache per core? sounds consistent across the flavors.

45nm, the next step in computing CPUs? Excellent. Wish AMD would.

TechARP reports a release date of November 12th, not November 11th. It seems things got messed up in translation.

so the benefit of these chips is that they just run cooler thanks to a smaller process? other than the obv 3ghz one, do they perform any faster?

Besides the benchmarks, wasn't this already reported here at Engadget?
Oh right, it was, 4 days ago: http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/28/intel-fleshes-out-45nm-yorkfield-launch-details/

What about those quad core 'Mobile' CPUs?

Glad to see the CPUs aren't confusing anymore.
Well done Intel. :|

Tech ARP Update:
Our source just clarified a few points with us. The initial November 11 date we mentioned earlier was not the launch date. It was really the date Intel set the price for the processors to be launched. The 45 nm processors will be launched on November 12. This was confirmed by Pat Gelsinger (Sr. Vice President and GM, Intel Digital Enterprise Group), whom I had the opportunity to talk to just a few hours ago.
The November 12 launch will include server-grade processors like the quad-core Xeon code-named Harpertown (12 MB L2 cache, TDPs of 50W, 80W and 120W) and a dual-core Xeon code-named Wolfdale-DP (6 MB L2 cache, TDP of 40W, 55W and 80W). The other 45 nm Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo processors mentioned above may or may not be announced during the Nov. 12 launch but their actual release dates are confirmed to be in January 2008.

Come on AMD. Don't force me to buy intel for desktops too.

a noob question
I'm planing to get new system next week. It's going to be with E6550 proc. Which mb (or which chipset) should I get so I can easily switch to a Yorkfield next year?
Wolf @ Oct 2nd 2007 11:56PM
mfx: Look for a P35 Intel Chipset and you should be good to go.

Let's hope Intel can get HSPDA and WiMAX on-board this time around.
