if you travel to abroad, you should forget 3G because of EXPENSIVE! there is no flat plan roaming... But you could connect to the Hotel WLAN (I use to bring a cheap wlan router to my trips, connect it to the hotelroom lan, so could use my laptop AND my wifi smartphone together) MOREOVER, you can use VOIP on your smartphone if it has wifi... especially good value if stay on abroad...
