Old 30GB Zune tops Amazon's DAP list
Make of it what you will, but Microsoft's now-old 30GB Zune is perched atop Amazon's bestseller list of hard drive-based MP3 players. 'Course, you've had plenty of opportunities to snag one in the past for a few bucks lower than the current $179.99 asking price, but apparently, the general public has taken quite kindly to the lower cost of entry. As of now, the white 30GB Zune is sitting pretty at numero uno, while the black iteration holds the bronze; the brown version even cracked the top five. Just sayin', that's all.[Via ZuneRama]

hmm a whole page of people and they all say the same thing.. wait. after reading all these comments.. i think i get it. the iPod classic isnt listed as a Hd DAP right? you know after reading the 10th comment that said that i might still be confused, someone PLEASE explain.. lol uSheep
I created a widget for a million dollars. No one bought it. I lowered the price of said widget 50%. 10 people bought it.
Success!
hey, selling something priced at a million dollars for half off to 10 people is most definitely a success, unless you were happier without that $5,000,000
And now it's at #3. LOL. Silly MS fanboys.
Um, that's not the bestseller list. This is:

Well, I just checked Amazon's top MP3 harddrive based. Apple has the 1 and 2 slots with Zune at 3.

Just confirming that none of the iPods are categorized as HDD-based MP3 players, so the rankings are incorrect.
"for some reason the new iPod Classic isnt categorized as Hard drive based in amazon"
hm, wow thats all i read for like 10 of these posts so far.
i guess if any1 is going to start claiming employee plants to hype something up, you better start including apple with that. because thats all they sounded like, fake unemotional employee paid response's
Thanks so much! I also just purchased a $105 Zune. If people can believe it, I've actually been wanting to buy one for some time now. This is perfect (even if I did want a brown one).
The free firmware update is just icing on the cake.
Does this surprise any one? Really? All bullshiss aside, seriously?
Didn't think so.

Forget the prices on Amazon. You can get the Zune for $99 at a special Woot page: http://www.geekpedia.com/deal55_Microsoft-Zune-30GB-Player.html - as long as you don't mind it being refurbished.
I have an iPod touch and while I certainly agree that it's annoying that the Mail app, notes and calendar editing are missing, it is still an absolutely fantastic device. I love mine. No, mine has not had any screen problems - the screen displays images and video beautifully, including blacks. It is a week 38 build. Also, even though it only holds 16 GB, I'm finding that it doesn't bother me so much as I thought it would. That still holds a fair bit of my music and the flash memory has a lot of benefits, notably the smoothness/speed of the interface, better battery life and, yes, the thinness, which I don't think is anything to scoff at, particularly because this thing has a web browser in it that works quite well (I wish it had flash support, though, and the ability to store pages for offline use.) I love being able to easily carry it with me everywhere I go in my pocket, and without looking like a dork. The glass front prevents the front from getting scratched up (yes, the back gets scratched up, but that doesn't bother me.) So, I hope Apple will add the Mail and Notes and calendar apps, but otherwise the iPod touch is a fantastic device.
Listen, DON'T TRUST THE AMAZON BESTSELLER LIST as your penultimate guide. Different models of players, even individual colours and capacities, are listed. Merchants select the categories for themselves, and that's why you see 'players' like "ARCHOS DVR STATION" on the list, even when Amazon specified that there's "non-accessory items". And the 3rd-generation iPod nanos aren't listed in Flash Players or 'Portable Digital Media Players', but some forms of those Chinese rip-offs are. Players with prices slashed usually gets a boost in the list, and outdated players like the Sansa m200 and c100 are still there. Just trust the list for the SALES of mp3 players, as defined in the online marketplace, but not overall.
Before all you MS freaks ruin your pants, read this:
Of the top 25 most popular MP3 players, Apple holds 15 spots, Sandisk holds 4 spots, and Microsoft holds 2 spots. Sandisk has more units in the top 25 than Microsoft. The 30gb Zune isn't even out-selling the 1bg, gen 2 iPod Shuffles.
Yeah...the Zune is doing amazing alright...
It looks like microsoft is pulling a good one this time. With that firmware update the old zunes will even own the new iPods. If the new ones (or the last gen brownie) supported MSC or were compatible with linux I'd get one without thinking.
I'm going to keep an eye on this:
http://crunchgear.com/2006/11/29/rockbox-for-zune-coming-soon/
I like the hardware, but it needs to work under Ubuntu.
I'm dubious. I just checks the Amazon best-selling MP3 players (differentiating between drive types to justify a position is just asinine) and the top selling Zune is seated at Number 21.

The top spots are taken by iPods, followed by Sandisk and Creative products.
