Sony have become the canonical example during the last 2 years of a company too big to know what the heck it's doing in any given moment.
Usually they'll confirm and reject everything you ask them several times, before they actually do it. You'll also hear three mutually exclusive versions of what is happening, all from top level management in Sony's various divisions across the world.
Microsoft used to have this problem 4-5 years ago, the glorious times of the Microsoft iLoo. We don't know to this day if the iLoo was true or not, Wikipedia says:
"The iLoo was either a short-lived Microsoft project to develop a Wi-Fi-enabled Internet flush toilet or a hoax perpetuated by a British division within Microsoft. News of the iLoo was widely reported, including by the Associated Press and the Wall Street Journal. Notably, the iLoo was not announced on April Fools Day. [..] However, due to confusion within the company about whether the project was a hoax, the project was quickly cancelled.[..] Microsoft has denied the existence of the iLoo project. According to some news services, though, Microsoft later retracted the denial, claiming that sources within Microsoft (incorrectly) believed the project to be a hoax."
For the PS3 just be practical and wait for announcement to happen if you consider buying. You can be sure it's happening at some point soon, since Sony can't afford the PS3 to be a distant third after Wii and XBox360 anymore.
