UPC filing reveals possible new Wii SKU
We've seen products make their first appearance in the form of a UPC filing before, and it looks like Nintendo may now be following the trend, with a recent filing of its revealing what looks to be an awful lot like a new Wii SKU. According to Codename Revolution's "distributor contact," the mystery product is described only as the "New Pack," and it apparently boasts a $289.99 Canadian retail price (which is the same as the current Wii SKU). While the UPC database unfortunately doesn't have any other details, speculation on the internets points to either a new bundle (possibly including the Wii Zapper or another game) or a new color, a rumor we've seen come and go in the past. Whatever it is, it seems safe to bet that it'll hit store shelves just in time for the holiday season.[Via Pocket-lint]

speculation:
Black Wii
or
Bundle with LoZ or Mario, or something of that sort..
or
Wii Core System
or
80gb Wii
or
Wii controller that looks like a Wii
or
Gamecube that looks like a Wii
or
... you get the idea
the important question: will they kick up production to the point where they acctually have them in stores to be bought on a daily basis, not whatever day they happen to come on in...
Wii Action Set with controller, zapper, Wii Sports and Duck Hunt!
Wii 40GB, w/o GC compatibility, two HALFAXIS controllers, rumble not included.
Hu?
DVD Playback maybe?
that was EXACTLY my comment but it didn't post.
Yeah, was hoping for DVD playback as well. Maybe they can do it through a system update?
i hope they can do it through updates, i'm on my second 360, i know i'll have to get that one serviced and refuse to trade and get a new one for hdmi, following the ps3 sku's so i can get one eventually
last thing i need is to get a new wii too
If this happens, the prices of the console would go up. They have to pay that tax thingy. I don't think Nintendo would let that happen.
What would be nice is giving the option in the Wii store. I would gladly pay extra to let my Wii play DVDs. And people that don't want to pay extra, don't have to.
Everyone wins. Except you, you're still looking for a Wii.
probably just a regular wii with the new remote jackets included.
My thought exactly.
Why are people buying wiis?
Why are people buying 360's?
Why are people buying PS3's?
Why do all the consoles have 3 symbol's in their name?
@ Kaemon
where is the "3" in "Wii" ?
GoreTEX: Try harder, your "retard troll" impression needs a lot of work.
@jeff foster.. the 3 symbols refers to amount of characters.. 360= 3 characters ps3= 3 characters Wii=3 characters.. need i go on to the drawn picture...
I'm sure the SKU will be on shelves by the holiday season. The actual product probably won't be available in any decent numbers till summer 2008.
If then
you could always stand online at the nintendo store, thats how i got my current one, i'm sure the nintendo store will have them in stock, but they will be sold out 5 minutes after the store opens.
It will just be the Wii with the rubber grip and new wrist strap.
I hope to hell it's NOT DVD playback, I have DVD-player for that. If it's new colors, that would be better. Anything but DVD playback.
can we please get some more memory for it? I don't know who in their right mind thought "512MB will be enough, nobody will be using the virtual console anyways...."
yeah ok.
DVD playback would boost sales, my brother has a really old dvd player and needs a second, he has yet to buy a wii but would like one, he wants to trade in his ps2 but he uses it as a dvd player...
there are alot of people who would appreciate the dvd playback, honestly i dont know why it was excluded in the first place
And include AVI and MKV containers with Divx/Xvid/H264 + MP3/AAC/OGG playback as well, on DVD and CD, + and -, ROM and R/W media, as well as USB thumb dries and the SD memory stick please.
I'd even buy my kid-friendly non-game content from iNintendo instead of iTunes if priced reasonably/similarly.
If the media formats are opened up to beyond SD, then it starts getting even more fun. Like doing the 64-piece puzzle mode while watching a movie.
Oh, and definitely up the on-board memory to 1 to 2 GB.
And a way to back up any on-board memory image/license keys, etc. onto USB/SD.
unless I'm mistaken 279.99 is the current canadian price.
what's the us price? seeing as the canadian dolla ris worth a bit more now than the US dollar, how bad are we getting ripped off?
$250 for the Wii with one remote, one nunchuk, and Wii Sports. Not a bad deal, but I think they should throw in some free NES games on the virtual console.
They were 279.99 at launch and have since become more expensive to 289.99. An interesting business plan by big N.
Maybe it's the same old Nintendo Wii with the new rubber remote sheath included in the box. That's my guess.
I know for sure, it is a dvd enabled Wii and increased graphic features and better Wifi technology.
They are including the Wii Remote covers in the box with all new Wii shipments. They have changed the sku to reflect that.
No story here folks, unless your excited about Wiimote condoms.
BINGO!
it will come with Wii Fit included. It's coming this christmas.
I'm hoping/predicting its for all those cool colors they kept showing us before it was released but never went on sale >_
It is probably the DVD playback Wii, that was promised to the US almost a year ago.
I already own a Wii. This makes me sad.
I'm thinking it's just a SKU change to reflect the Wii Remote Jacket being included.... I'm sure the Wii Remote's SKU is going to change as well....
Email received from Nintendo about 2 months ago
Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,
I can confirm that Nintendo and Sonic Solutions have made an agreement to allow Nintendo the use of Sonic Solutions' DVD technology in a future version of the Wii console. However, launch details, like where (regions or countries) it will sell, release date, or price (although it will be more expensive than the original version) are currently unavailable and won't be revealed until sometime in the latter half of 2007. It will not be available as an add-on attachment.
For those who already own a DVD player at home, the launch version of Wii will be the best choice. This version of the console is more affordable and you'll be able to enjoy Wii games immediately.
One more thing, please check out our important safety information for playing Wii on the following web page:
