Neiman Marcus to sell Perceptive Pixel's Interactive Media Wall: yours for $100k
You may know Jeff Han, you've probably seen his company Perceptive Pixel's Interactive Media Wall / Multi-touch Collaboration Wall (or whatever they're calling it these days -- if not, peep it here), but the missing link to this stuff is taking it home. Well, the wait is apparently over, and for once it's Neiman Marcus we've got to thank. While you're shopping for the latest must-have fall fashions, be sure to stop by the newly anointed Futuristic Displays That Don't Belong at Neiman Marcus Shop to pick up your 8 x 3-foot multi-touch display for a cool $100,000 US, only ten times the price of Microsoft's forthcoming Surface. Don't worry, your family will appreciate your investment; trust us, we really think they'd far prefer it to, say, Christmas presents, a home to live in, or dinner at some point in 2008.

YEEEEAAAAAH FIRST!
Lol this is funny - "for a cool $100,000 US, only ten times the price of Microsoft's forthcoming Surface"
rockintom @ Oct 8th 2007 12:16PM
It would have been so awesome if you ended up second. As it stands, you are just a flaming douchebag.
secinfinity.com @ Oct 7th 2007 10:16PM
hmm.. 100K is too expensive for display. I would easily opt in for High End Projectors, yeah i know I would be missing the touching. Well while I watch something on wall, I dont need to touch the wall :-)

That's like 344 iPod Touch.
..can 344 iPods fill 8x3?
john @ Oct 7th 2007 10:59PM
regardless, you still couldn't add calendar events nor 3rd party apps...
JDizzle @ Oct 7th 2007 10:21PM
I'll just buy a couple dry-erase whiteboards and a set of markers if I want multi-touch.
dUN @ Oct 7th 2007 10:23PM
people in NM pretty much figured out that no one will probably buy one of these anyway~
JAmerican @ Oct 7th 2007 10:24PM
That's how M$ kills the competition because they can afford to subsidize their technology. Now while the Surface looks cool on the surface (lol), it may internally be flawed like let's say the 360.
anthony @ Oct 8th 2007 6:24AM
You can't compare this to Microsoft's Surface - they're completely different technologies, for different markets. Surface is a projector under a table, this is a true multi-touch surface (not two or three finger touch).
You wouldn't be buying this for your home, but there is definitely a market for data analysis and visualization.
Josh L @ Oct 7th 2007 10:36PM
This is not competing with Surface. The summary author probably included the price comparison because the devices perform a similar function (sort of).
rockintom @ Oct 8th 2007 12:18PM
...And the 360 is *intentionally* flawed, how?
remrof @ Oct 8th 2007 5:30PM
"[...] or dinner at some point in 2008."
Is that an inflation joke, or what?
michael @ Oct 7th 2007 10:31PM
Why Neiman Marcus?
The high-price thing might be similar, but I don't think Neiman Marcus does electronics, do they?
And the site is rather vague about what it does.
As far as I can tell, it didn't mention internet, programs, or anything like that. Just fuzzy stuff like string a sonata with your fingertips, flip through manuscripts, all the la-la stuff. It's a pretty big mystery to me.
Blah @ Oct 7th 2007 10:48PM
IIRC, Neiman's has a holiday catalog every year and there's usually a ridiculous over-the-top item with a fabulous price. It's a tradition.

Its nice, but does it blend?

I bet the buyers working for Neiman Marcus will get their salaries slashed!
Kane @ Oct 8th 2007 12:09AM
guy montag definitely got this for a little over 2 grand back in 1953--way overpriced...
Legodude522 @ Oct 8th 2007 12:41AM
Great reference to Fahrenheit 451!

Obviously this is meant to be a backdrop in some "Sex in the City"-like parties. Because I can't imagine that it is being marketed toward any of gadget crowd when they went so far as to put it out of their way and sell it at Neiman Marcus. I wonder if the smell of expensive suits and shoes waft from it when you buy it?
cmj2405 @ Oct 8th 2007 3:04AM
Is that Hiro Nakamura?
John @ Oct 8th 2007 3:35AM
The first time I buy a TV where I can/have to get up and touch something on it, it'll be called a 'HoloDeck'
jason @ Oct 8th 2007 9:04AM
Um... am I the only one who is completely freaked out about the idea of multi-touch displays (for smudgy screen reasons)? I mean, I don't mind pocket devices - you can wipe those off pretty easily - I just can't stand the idea of a 20+" monitor having finger smudge all over it. Maybe it's just me, but I really hate it when people grease up my non-touch monitor. I guess I could install a hand washing station by my machine...
Matthew Hilario @ Oct 8th 2007 11:59AM
id rather spend 20 bucks and make myself an LED Coffee table.
snazz @ Oct 8th 2007 2:02PM
A new Nieman Marcus just opened up near me, guess i'll be spending some time there trying it out soon :P
leslie @ Oct 9th 2007 2:36AM
This is not the future, it is now. Instead of am 8'x3' wall in an office, creating an amazing interactive space for design teams who will be able to pull up working drawings for a new building or new retail space, this becomes part of the home, replacing the 32" flat screen, plays continuous flashes of photos of the latest vacation, the favorite dvd and all tv functions, as well as interactive media, digital media display and and ever-changing continuous piece of art in the home. If you don't think this will change in-home media, in-home design, and business interaction and design, you're living in the dark ages! Pay attention... here it is... the present and what every consumer would wish to have... let's see how fast it sells out of Neiman Marcus!
