iPod classic and nano update fixes performance niggles
Apparently that 1.0.1 iPod update the other week didn't do much to fix the iPod classic and nano's Coverflow performance, with a new update fixing low framerates and jerky animations once and for all. Overall faster menu performance is also part of the package, with TV Out functionality getting the fix it should have had in the first place, with a third "ask" option for selecting TV out mode when a cable is plugged in. These cases of release now, fix later are really becoming a bore.[Thanks, Billy. Via MacRumors]

niggles...
damn dude, do you have one of those "word of the day" calenders?
suntiger @ Oct 8th 2007 5:30AM
You kidding? He can barely structure a coherent sentence! "Apparently that 1.0.1 iPod update the other week didn't do much to fix the iPod Classic and Nano's Coverflow performance, with a new update fixing low framerates and jerky animations once and for all."
Come on, "with" is not a conjunction, and "with it" is even less of one!
Flyy (NDF) @ Oct 8th 2007 5:27PM
It's a prepositional phrase...maybe YOU need some work on sentence structuring.
rain @ Oct 8th 2007 4:34AM
good, how much
Seattle Bill @ Oct 8th 2007 4:48AM
before i update, i gotta know if this update will brick my ipod???
Eugene @ Oct 8th 2007 4:57AM
no.
John Jarin @ Oct 8th 2007 5:10AM
sadly, the video out is ONLY thru the pin connector still and the AV cables still have to be used with an iPod universal dock... goodbye video out thru the audio jack!
slug @ Oct 8th 2007 6:02AM
Since when could you play a video through an AUDIO jack?
BobbyW @ Oct 8th 2007 6:10AM
@slug: those jacks have always had the capability for video. the 3.5mm plugs have multiple connection points in the jack. lots of video cameras use them to send audio and video.
John Jarin @ Oct 8th 2007 7:30AM
its is very possible to play video using the 3.5mm jack A.K.A audio jack :D
John @ Oct 8th 2007 12:01PM
You can play a stereo audio off the jacks... thinking logically, that means you would obviously be able to play at least video + mono sound off of them assuming the device could output that to the jack and you had a cable for it. It's all just current - the only thing that mattersisthe number of points you can send data through.
Yahtzee @ Oct 8th 2007 3:42PM
saw a dissection of the iPod Classic, there is an extra connection for video on the headset jack of the iPod Video, this connection does not exist on the Classic. You have to buy the $100 "peripheral" instead of a $10 cable now.
antho @ Oct 8th 2007 5:57AM
im glad it was fixed it bugged me
its whole lot better now
Steve Smith @ Oct 8th 2007 6:35AM
My Classic does seem slow to respond but I guess that's partly due to hard drive spin-up and everything happening in "virtual memory." My only issue is a failure of my iCal calendar information to transfer to my iPod despite setting it to sync. Anyone else?

"These cases of release now, fix later are really becoming a bore."
Seems it's the way of the world, now that we have the internet and upgradable devices... I could joke about the 'release the Zune 1.0 now, fix the software a year later' joke but the reality these updates are better than being stuck with something until the next model year, the way it used to be. I'm betting that the minute I finish installing OS X Leopard this month there will likely be a software update.
illingist trooper @ Oct 8th 2007 7:22AM
For easier reading, make sure you update the firmware patch on my last comment:
"...but the reality IS, these updates..."
Tim Hosey @ Oct 8th 2007 8:12AM
Let's take a page from Sony and the PSP and have functionality at the start (aka the ability to run homebrew games) and remove it later, pretty much making the reason thousands of people bought the thing null and void.
Yeah, I agree that the release now fix later becomes dull, but I'd prefer to see functionality added than removed.
Autopilot @ Oct 8th 2007 8:23AM
I just feel sorry for the thousands of people around the world without broadband (yes, plenty people cant get it still is US, UK and all over) because it's impossible to update the iPod without it - iTunes cant properly resume downloads or cope with slow internet connections at all. So basically, yer stuck with a slug.
therpham @ Oct 8th 2007 9:02AM
The best thing about this update is that it fixed compilations.
mark @ Oct 8th 2007 9:15AM
do you realize that you're using the word 'niggle' completely wrong?
B @ Oct 8th 2007 9:15AM
"These cases of release now, fix later are really becoming a bore."
Oh, I agree.
Almost as much of a bore, in fact, as tech "news" sites that glom on to any rumored release date for an Apple product, hype it like there's no tomorrow, then ride Apple's ass like it was a municipal bus if they don't bring something out that day.
Apparently, you really _can't_ win.

I had to divorce my wife because, and I quote "she was a niggle-lover" -me (taking direction from the man Dave Chappelle)
This word is not really appropriate. Why not say, "these ipod updates are niggardly?" Well, because these words sound racist, and most certainly have racist underpinnings. Let us not celebrate our differences, but our similarities. Thanks
Taire @ Oct 8th 2007 10:54AM
Alberto, apparently, you do not know the meaning of the work niggle, and more importantly, how can you get grammar lessons from the Dave Chappelle show !!! Niggle is an oft used term for minor annoyance, or quirk, or nuance !!!! It has no racial connotation (spelling ?) And yes by your usuage, I am a niggle !!! (lol at internet comments) but yes, you can be forgiven for your confusion
Here is a quote from www.allwords.com
niggle : a slight nagging worry.
Dutch: kleingeestige aanmerking (de)
French: contrariété (f)
German: Nörgler (m)
Italian: assillo
Spanish: engorro, fastidio
alberto gonzales @ Oct 8th 2007 11:23AM
First of all, my post was supposed to be humorous/pensive, not annoying like your post. Second, I am going to give you a grammar/word usage lesson because you asked for it. Third, you say "...not know the meaning of the work niggle." Well, you got me here. I do not know of the "work niggle". Is it a special kind of niggle? Maybe it is a specialized type of niggle, but to my knowledge, I have not heard of a "work niggle." I think your dumb ass means, WORD. So, you must be pretty smart, you can look up words on the internet, and then quote them in 5 languages. Holy shit, you have probably been to all of those countries, and speak fluent, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and French, which is why you have quoted all 5 languages. Next, I did not get my grammar lessons from Dave Chappell. I have never met the genius, nor contacted him in any way. I just find his work funny and good natured. Interestingly enough, a law school professor of mine actually quoted that same quote in class, sans niggle, so I would say Dave's skits are pervasive in the American culture and relevant to race/class and gender in American society. Please explain why it would not make sense to divorce your wife, because she "was a person who loved to nag, or loved ones who nagged? I find this annoying, and I would sure divorce my wife, if she loved annoying people, or if her name was Taire. What confusion do you speak of again? Let us think about etymology for a minute. Niggle from 1599, meaning "busy with trifles", most likely related to niggard 1366 "stingy." N*&&r 1786 negro, black, colored. I would like to argue that this word may have had roots in niggard and niggle, (annoying, and stingy). In 1786 what do you think Americans (speaking English) thought of African-Americans, probably not very nice thoughts. Even if niggle has nothing to do with racism, it conjures up other very similar words. We are only human, and word association is a powerful thing. I mean seriously, why do I always drink beer after I see a commercial of a "hot chick" telling me how good it is? Cause I want some damn beer, dammit. So, I think my theory is pretty good, care to comment? I just think there is a better word choice for engadget, their fan base is probably mostly white, males from ages 18-35. Oh and I took the day off of work to wait to comment on your comment. Shout out to the rest of the engadget readers, sorry to get all political, respect. Thanks, Have a great Day!
Big John @ Oct 8th 2007 11:35AM
The both of you, shut it already.
Ian H. @ Oct 8th 2007 2:18PM
IIRC, the racist term for black people comes from the Spanish for black, "negro", since it was the Spanish who were among the first to start the African slave trade to the Americas. Niggard and niggle do not share that same etymology.
Taire @ Oct 8th 2007 10:55AM
Oh and I mean to say meaning of the word and not work (I guess I need some grammar and spelling help as well)

So does that mean the third ask happens when you are about to play a video? Does that also mean you can plug "whatevertheheck" brand cables/accessories into the bottom port/pin connector and then turn on the third ask and thus bypass the requirement of an Apple ID chip in every accessory?

giggles giggles giggles giggles giggles...
On a different vein:
I bought the ipod classic twice, returned it twice. It just got stuck, no matter what I did. I checked the internet for cases like mine. There are loads of them. Many causes for the freeze have been advanced, and many solutions have been suggested, many of them too technical.
If a product really works, then it works; it's as simple as that. One can't be put through all this mumbo jumbo and technical labyrinth, some of it through trial and error, to get this darned thing to work. And by the way, I bought the ipod classic with the simple intention to listen to music and relax my mind. It was never my intention to troubleshoot, do researches and make a whole technical dissertation out of it. If I had wanted mental challenge, a crossword puzzle would have been so much cheaper.
You see, it all boils down to this: FOR FEAR OF COMMITTING A MORTAL SIN, MANUFACTURERS SHOULD NEVER PUT OUT IN THE MARKET A DEVICE THAT THEY ARE NOT ABSOLUTELY SURE WORKS. This is the reason the world is so f----d up in the first place.
JUST SELL TO THE CONSUMER A DEVICE THAT SIMPLY--AND I MEAN "SIMPLY"--WORKS!!! FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!
