Onda's vx838 old-Nano esque PMP
We've got another PMP from the East for you today: Onda's vx838 has been popping up on foreign language sites over the last few weeks. It has a relatively impressive 1.8-inch screen considering the old-Nano esque form factor, but there's nothing else to get excited about: this is just another 2GB MP3/MP4 player that probably won't hit the states anytime soon.

I assume the reason these Chinese makers keep releasing players in such small capacities is because the Chinese folk who buy them can't afford the run of the mill 4-16gig players that are common here in the states now?
I've noticed that some of these could be decent players, but usually have such small capacity and never seems to cross their mind to ever use a hard drive.
does anybody know, whos the girl on the picture? she's cute
I'm pretty sure that's Ayumi Hamasaki, "asian woman on electronics screens" du jour.
Doesn't that look more like a Cowon than a Nano?
That exactly what I was thinking. Since when does a thin and tall mp3 constitute a Nano knockoff?
And they say there's no Apple bias in Engadget...
Nano form factor yet no mention of the iAudio 7 controls, yea good one.
OK, this is getting ridiculous...iPods might be the dominant PMP on the market, but at this rate...
...if it if it's tall and thin it's an iPod rip-off, it is short and fat it's an iPod rip-off, if it's "normal sized" it's an iPod rip-off, if the controls are in any arrangement that even hints at a circle it's an iPod rip-off...I mean VCRs had their controls in "iPod arrangement" circles in the 80s, but no mention that iPods are JVC VCR rip-offs!
Come on, this sort of stuff is getting very, very old.
i have to support miker on this one
this is stupid engadget ...
ithought we cleared this ... the only thing that has charisma about apple designs is the UI (and even that is minimal at best) - just because someone markets its minimalism better then others doesnt mean they own it...
ITS A RECTANGLE WITH ROUND CORNERS SO YOU DONT POKE YOUR EYES OUT WITH IT AND A SCREEN
A note to all future mp3 player designers: please try to make your players as large as possible, as making thin players has been patented by Apple.
Rectangular with a screen isn't a rip-off of anything. My Archos Jukebox 10 back in the day was rectangular with a screen. TVs are rectangles with screens. Seriously, suggest another form factor for designers to use if you're going to keep calling anything rectangular with a screen an iPod rip-off and anything rectangular with a touchscreen an iPhone rip-off.
Those controls, on the other hand...
The color "black" is also an Apple iPod trademark. Suuuuue.
it has a screen and ways to control what music you are listening to. yes it must be a copy of something apple made. shut the fuck up engadget writer.
