Sony's 40GB PS3 headed for America next month?
Go on and file this one away in the rumor drawer, but on the same token, don't be utterly shocked if Sony looses its 40GB PlayStation 3 on American soil next month. According to The Hollywood Reporter, SCEA "will unveil a $399 40GB PlayStation 3 on US shores," and moreover, sources were quoting November 2nd as a likely launch date. Currently, we've no reason to believe that we Americans would receive anything other than the pared down machine that the Europeans were introduced to last week, but we'll be sure and keep you posted on any further developments.

I would have bought it if i knew about before I bought my Xbox Elite. too late now.
NIGGLES!
No BC = No Dice.
I'll second that! I sold my PS2 & Gamecube in preparation for buying their successors. As it is now, I'll probably get a Wii and a used PS2.
I am not a huge game... but even me the soccer mom has respect for this system

Loses*
That would be looses, as in unveils. Not loses as in ... misplaces.
dumbass*
no he means "looses", as in I loosed my angry dog upon the burglar. same thing happened here: http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/25/palm-looses-vista-compatible-desktop-beta/
No, I think he actually means "loses" as in "Sony loses the next-gen console war."
Hey engadget when was your double-post software checked. Because IIRC this is the "n"th post ive seen about a 40gb PS3.
Also, how is it that Apple has a gadget that is tons less powerful but costs the same as this ps3?
I'll wait until its sold for $250. By the time it gets there I'll be off video games.
Apple caters to suckers
This is a great option for just a bluray since this will be the cheapest player on the market and PS3 is pretty much considered almost the best blueray player on the market for picture quality and performance. Even DVD upconversion is suppose to be the best out there. Plus PS3 is probally the only bluray player on the market that probally could update is BB-J profiles to the upcoming newer versions.
Hmmmm, might buy this for the bluray player.
Well i have a 60gig model and i don't really use if for playing any ps2 games. The only advantage really is when you have a ps2 game come out for 40 dollars and a ps3 game come out for 60 dollars and they are the same title. You could buy the 40 dollar one for the ps2 and let it upconvert the video for you and you get almost the same visual happiness. But the thing is they don't make warhawk, heavenly sword, Resistance: FOM or any of the good games like that for the ps2. Not to mention up coming games like Haze and URT 3(likely delayed again sadly). But for anyone getting the 40 gig and complaining about backwards compatibiliy then pick up an old ps2 from you local gamestop on the cheap. Or you could just not be so cheap spend the extra 100 dollars, get 20 more gig and full BC.
Have a good day everyone, i'm going back to Resistance now.

All the more reason to get a 360!
PS3 Sucks!
Fanboyism is just a waste of time. You live for the sole purpose of promoting your favorite console and trash talking opposing ones? You people give XBox owners a bad name.
I'm just saying Sony needs to get there act together. This different console every 3 weeks or so has gone on long enough. Stick with the consoles they have and work on better games. Also, it seems like the console was rushed out the door.

Xbox 360 Core
Xbox 360 Arcade
Xbox 360 Premium
Xbox 360 Elite
Xbox 360 Falcon
Xbox 360 Halo Special Edition
Xbox 360 The Simpsons Movie Edition
Xbox 360 doesnt have that many consoles either.
"Also, it seems like the console was rushed out the door."
Actually its the opposite in 2 aspects. The console wasn't rushed, it had to wait awhile for the bluray copyright protection technology and standards to get authorized and set. That is the reason playstation missed its November launch by months.
Also the Xbox 360 was extremely rushed, hence the 1.5 billion dollar loss they took since every one of the Xbox 360's were faulty prior this August or whatever. (33% current failure rate and microsoft stated that potential all are faulty anyway, so could fail in the future) I myself have had 2 fail on me.
You sir, are an idiot.
well if it had all that extra time to work on it why isnt it just amazing huh?
casue it sucks! and so does the whole play station franchise.
ps3 sucks, get a 360. millions more online gamers to play with, let alone much better games.
I wonder if the above two posts are from the same person, or there is just a fanboy militia always waiting to spread their ignorance on the internet...
The comments across different devices are even similar in their stupidity...maybe the fanboys are being outsourced from the same Indian company?
@Azsori: rofl, seriously.
No bc= not interested.
I'm done waiting for the ps3 and psp to deliver on Anything its promised.
If they put this thing out at 400, with the backwards compatability, I'm down. As it is, there are almost zero PS3 exclusives that I want to play, but I'd pay 400 bucks for a Blu-Ray player, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and the promise of Metal Gear 4 on the horizon (not to mention Unreal Tournament 3 on the PS3 with mods. If only my 360 could do that).
If it doesn't have BC, I'll stick to playing PS3 games at friends houses. You've been warned Sony.
Geeez once again americans get it cheaper :)
The european 40GB model was €399 = $562,15 (with todays rate) and now you might get it as a $399 model (€283,20).
Someone should hammer it into Kazuo Hirai head that euro is not equal to the US dollar.
And when will you people finally understand to take taxes and such into consideration! In Germany, for example, the €399 includes the VAT of 19%! Subtract that from the €399, and then add the US sales tax onto the $399, take import tariffs into consideration, and the difference will be considerably smaller.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a little cheaper in the states, but you can't just convert the price tags back and forth without taking country-specific factors into consideration.
PS3 is the best gadget ever made!
without good games and cost to much
Doesn't the PS3 have backwards compatability through software emulation? Or is that the problem? Crappy software emulation and no rumble controller packed in.
hrm, the Japanese version of this 40GB version has DualShock3. I think that the EU version does too. What makes you think that this version won't?
The lack of BC is somewhat troublesome, though. Wonder how this will play out for Sony.
So, now Sony has decided that people would rather have a Blu-ray player that has game capabilities instead of a game console that happens to be able to play Blu-ray movies. Sony needs to pick with a marketing stategy and stick with it. All this modifying the SKU and targeting specific demographics is what's kill the PS3. And if they don't stick with a plan soon, the PS3 will probably bomb worse than Nintendo's Virtual Boy.
This is something of a gamble for them. It definitely brings the price below that mental block most have for buying a system. But how many people really want BC? Personally, I am glad that they reduced the price to this level and I don't REALLY see myself playing PS2 games on it (I'll be keeping my PS2 for a while, anyway), but I'm probably not the norm. Maybe I am the norm (or at least Sony thinks so)?
Also, the ever-changing SKUs do hurt them somewhat, but I think that Normal Joe Everybody doesn't really care. They just want something priced well that plays fun/good-looking games (hence the present success of the Wii and 360).
I just purchased the 40gb version and I think it is an amazing piece of hardware. Granted their are not that many games out yet. Assassins Creed, Guitar Hero 3, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, are amazing titles. I am really looking forward to Metal Gear Solid 4 from the trailers it looks very promising and Midnight Club:Los Angeles edition also dated to come out next year looks like it is going to be awesome. Aside from that the blue ray movies look stellar on my new Phillips 32" HDTV. For some reason I was never intrigued by the Xbox 360 and the issues it has been plagued with. Nothing against the Xbox 360 some games look awesome, I just cannot find any reason to buy the 360 console, perhaps it is the overall bad design of the machine (ugly). If I found one for around $100.00 dollars then I might purchase it. In due time I know that their will be a massive amount of games made available for the Playstation 3, just wait and see:) In the meantime my healthy 6 year old PS2 can still play my old games on my modest 27" CRT Television.
