Sony paints gadgets pink, donates to breast cancer research
As companies continue to give their products pink makeovers in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Sony is joining the fray by introducing a trio of items that all give back. Up first is the 14.1-inch VGN-CR290EAP laptop (starting at $1,369.99), which features a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 200GB of hard drive space, DVD writer, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, integrated X3100 graphics, 2GB of DDR2 RAM and a slew of ports to boot. The 4GB NWZ-A816PNK Walkman ($149.95) boasts a 320 x 240 display, up to 33-hours of battery life (8-hours when playing back videos) and support for MP3, WMA, AAC, MPEG4 and M4V formats. Finally, the 8-inch DVP-FX810/P portable DVD player ($189.99) offers up a swiveling flip-screen and promises around 5.5-hours of life on a full charge. And just so you know, Sony will be donating $75, $10 and $10 (respectively) from the sale of each aforementioned gadget to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.[Via ChipChick]

Anyone notice the trend of pink whenever it's breast cancer?
Christ, why can't it be more exciting? Like fire and explosions or something.
IndiaTech @ Oct 9th 2007 10:05PM
@Paul: Brown is like more suitable for Colon Cancer Research...
You hear me Microsoft? Let sell some of those Ol' Zunes for a good cause...

More men die each year of Prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer and only about 1 tenth of the money spent on breast cancer research is spent on Prostate research.
Maybe microsoft could donate proceeds from the brown zune to Prostate cancer research ....
Argot @ Oct 9th 2007 6:28PM
And Apple could launch the iPenis and donate the money from that.
Jay @ Oct 9th 2007 6:29PM
Yes, this fact is rarely promoted, and that is a disgrace. But unfortunately men's prostates aren't as emotive a subject as women's breasts.
Alistair loveless @ Oct 9th 2007 7:10PM
Show of hands....
Who thinks breasts outrank prostates?
Kozzi @ Oct 9th 2007 7:48PM
Oh come on, it's breast we talking about.
Rog @ Oct 9th 2007 8:07PM
mmm .. I love a good prostate massage.

"More men die each year of Prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer"
Cancer Facts & Figures 2006 - American Cancer Society
Prostate cancer deaths = 27,350
Breast cancer deaths = 41,430 (460 male deaths)
Actually, prostate cancer is one of the most curable cancers there is (5 year survival ~ 100%). And if we wanted to spend our money well, we'd put this money towards lung cancer (162,460 deaths, 5 year survival = 15%), but that would require that we (Americans) quit smoking... and we'd rather focus on our reproductive organs, I guess.
Oh, and Rog, the only way to "massage" your prostate is by a digital rectal exam...
mushrooshi @ Oct 9th 2007 6:34PM
Pink is friggin ugly.
Why the hell do they need to make it so only the pink gadgets are the ones that donate. Sheesh, why don't they just stick a subtle pink decal on there instead of make the whole thing pink. Or better yet, make the 10 percent of the profit on ALL of their gadgets give to breast cancer.
ANd why the frick is the color for breast cancer pnk. 1 out of 10 breat cancer patients is male.
Tony @ Oct 9th 2007 6:51PM
They're probably running out of colors for the ribbons, would you prefer periwinkle?
DAZA @ Oct 10th 2007 1:32AM
According to statistics above you - Breast cancer deaths = 41,430 (460 male deaths)
So it's more like 1%.
Brian @ Oct 9th 2007 6:36PM
Because only people who like pink stuff care about breast cancer...
danny @ Oct 9th 2007 7:04PM
This is ridiculous. Did anyone know that September was "National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month"?...
...Didn't think so. Breast cancer is so politicized. Now please no one get me wrong, it IS awful that women die from it, and I wholly hope they find a cure. But when was the last time you saw a concert for prostate cancer, which happens to kill just about as many men each year as breast cancer does women?
Maybe they just wouldn't want to deal with all the jokes :)
StaffordshireBT @ Oct 9th 2007 7:19PM
"The snozzberries taste like snozzberries!", "The VAIOs taste like VAIOs!".......
Jonathan-DBOSS @ Oct 9th 2007 8:01PM
Pfft, another marketing campaign. Why not donate money from other products. Like, at least, other colors...
Wwhat @ Oct 9th 2007 11:01PM
Yeah a bit sad how now anything pinks will remind you of awful diseases, I wonder if people still dress baby girls in pink?
"look how cute.. she reminds you of cancer"
Great.
DAZA @ Oct 10th 2007 1:30AM
Good gesture from Sony. Their donation amounts are actually quite a bit too, most companies will donate like $1 from every product sold but Sony are actually contributing a decent amount from their profits. Good job.
Just a shame that the pink SKUs will be the lowest selling, but at least it's something.

My wife who is 42 had/has breast cancer in March 2004 (two years after we had married). She had seen the Pink Suzan G Komen Sony Vaio in a Sunday paper advertisement a couple of weeks ago. She wants a lappy of her own so I am looking to buy it for her. I think it's a good cause and I hope they continue to battle these diseases while also promoting public awareness.
