Gateway rolls out P-series laptops, GT-series desktop

While it likely won't do much to appease those who missed out on the ever-so-shortly-available $300 Gateway laptop, the company has just announced a couple of new entries in its slightly higher-end P-series laptop line, which each manage to stay under the $1,000 mark. Those include the $800 P-6801 model, which sports a 1.46GHz Pentium dual-core processor and a 160GB hard drive, and the $950 P-6822, which ups things to a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo processor, a 250GB hard drive, and a built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam. Both models also pack the same 17-inch 1440 x 900 display, along with the usual Intel X3100 graphics. On the desktop front, Gateway has let loose its new GT5628 model, which is based around Intel's G33 chipset and packs a speedy 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad processor, along with GeForce 8500 GT graphics, 3GB of RAM, and a spacious 500GB hard drive. Look for it to set you back $950 when it lands October 14th, which is the same day the laptops are set to be released.

terrible for 3-d gaming, terrible mostly throughout, you would be better off with an nvidia of ati, any of them are better than Intel graphics.

Decent performances, runs great on Vista and offers great battery life (in other words, it won't drain the shit out of your battery if you do media on it).

My girlfriend's got an HP laptop with it and it's probably the only time I was able to appreciate Vista, but I still don't think it's worth forking out over a hundred bucks for (Vista, that is).

Except when you're using Vista, when they're bottlenecked by shitastic drivers and drain your battery life (at least, the G8600GT does).

I find it bizarre that my Macbook Pro with less cells than the Inspiron 1520 I returned sports better battery life than the latter (3 hours of gaming vs. 2, similar hardware configuration for both)... While my girlfriend's laptop (I'm not shitting you, it's got a 12 cell) sports 10 hours minimum (at max performance) of battery life, and when you switch it to low performance it nearly doubles (approx. 75% increase).

i made the mistake of buying a gateway laptop that had turion 64 mobile technology instead of X2 about a year ago. It has xp which i dont mind. But I see 500gb on this which is incredible considering mine has 120 :P

Gateway is really making a comeback. I don't think I have heard the name in the news in the last several years. Now... in the last week or two all I see is Gateway! Monitors, laptops... it is like 1992 all over again.

Damn I wish I didn't miss out on that $299 deal...

As of yesterday, my local location still had about 20 of the 299.00 models (except they are 349.00 here in AK, because of shipping I guess) and at least 10 of the 449.00 model, even though the website listed both as out of stock online and in store at that location.

They had the cheaper on in two big pyramids in the laptop section, but the 449 one wasn't on display at all and my friend had to ask a salesrep if they had them in stock, which they did and had locked up in one of their merchandise cages. Of the two, I'd go with the 449 one because it's GL960 chipset allows upgrading the cpu to a merom core 2 duo and sports a 533/667/800 FSB, with support for up to 4gigs of ram. Of course you'd have to upgrade the cpu to a merom chip with the intel 64 extension and purchase a 64bit version of windows to make use of those 4 gigs, but I guess it's comforting to know you could if you wanted to.
