Motorola dresses up RAZR 2, christens it "Luxury Edition"
We still think it's a little early in the RAZR 2's life to be changing up colors and trimmings and turning it into a special edition, but what do we know? As expected, Motorola's announced the "Luxury Edition" of the EDGE-only RAZR 2 V8, trimming the phone with 18 and 24 karat gold accents, a black "vacuum metal" finish, etched sides and nav wheel, and a soft-touch posterior endowed with a snakeskin pattern. A bundled H680 Bluetooth headset (trimmed with 18 karat gold, naturally) and a leather carrying case round out the package, fit for the aspiring Vertu owner who hasn't quite yet reached a Vertu salary. Look for it to start showing up in "select regions" -- the US included, we suspect -- before the year's out.

That looks really bad. The Moto TCKY or BLNG would have been more appropriate.

You're right, and I'm getting fed up of al these "designer" phones.
What does Prada add to the LG phone, or Armani for their samsung, except a logo??????????????
L @ Oct 11th 2007 1:45PM
Not really a fan of that.
But it does look less tacky than most other "luxury" handsets. While for example the D&G V3i was just perfect for all the chavs, this actually has some class...
L @ Oct 11th 2007 1:46PM
OK, just saw the opened pictures. Urgh.
And the snakeskin pattern on the back is not my style either.

Agrees. The front had promise.

Just saw the pictures of the back and opened. Urgh - this IS tacky.
Too bad, because the front is quite nice.

While my car was parked, someone reached inside and stole my Nextel I870. The phpne was worth about $200 so besides the immediate anger and dissapointment, it was not a major loss.
I can't even imagine how homicidal I'd feel if I lost an 18K gold accented phone if it cost more than $500 - or an iphone for that matter.
Secondly, Vertu phones SUCK. Gold and leather wrap don't mean anything to me. Many of their phones are technology obsolete.

What ever happened to Motorola not beating a brand to death? It has been what, a month? And they already are coming out with another RAZR 2?
Steve Jobs @ Oct 11th 2007 2:51PM
The razr is fucking garbage anyways. My razr one didn't even last a year before it fell apart, so I'd never risk the loot on a 'luxury phone' based on the razr design.
I'd probably never buy a luxury phone, I will however be taking a serious look at the lg vx880 (veenus - Dumbest fuckin cell phone name ever). Anyone have any speculation on the price of the vx8800? Around 150 would be fine for me, with my $100 credit in december I'd be fully willing to spend 50 bucks on it.
b_a_boone @ Oct 11th 2007 5:34PM
I love my 8800 Sirocco Gold Phone, just kidding my girl does. Any dude with a designer phone is mad they don't know how to use a PDA phone so they have to spend more to look cool.

I know the woman who designed the image behind the clock, as well as a bunch of other media on the phone. She'll be pumped her work made in to Engadget!

This is something a rapper/wannabe would buy.

Wow...these RAZR 2's suck!
I bought the phone when it first came out, sometime at the end of August. Yeah, I got it August 29.
Anyway, if you're planning on getting one of these pieces of crap, think again. They don't last long. Mine broke on September 7. I always kept it in my pocket with a case on it, and one day when I took it out, the sceen was cracked. Yes, the ENTIRE screen was cracked. You would think that your pocket would be a safe place to keep it in...but it ain't.
Now, I dunno if this problem has happened to anyone of you that has this phone, but whatever. I thought that accidents happened and (some) people drop their phones sometimes. That's understandable. It would probably get a minor scratch or something. But breaking when it's in your pocket?! That's just plain stupid. I didn't even drop it once. Oh...and the camera lags if you have to much crap on your memory card....you press the Capture button and it makes the shutter noise like, a minute later...stupid..
Clinton Christian @ Oct 11th 2007 8:50PM
Sure... you get the 24k gold trimmings and "vacuum metal finish"... but what about the interface? :S
Collin @ Oct 12th 2007 5:59PM
Good grief. The milking of the Razr marketing ploy cow is causing said cow to have soar nipples.
insertAlias @ Oct 11th 2007 7:52PM
Are the nipples flying then?
Kidding, I know you meant sore.
Truly Disappointed @ Nov 18th 2007 2:05AM
I'm truly disappointed by the non-luxury RAZR2 V8. For me, its unusable. You can't configure it so that the phone rings, and SMS's are silent (I need to hear the phone ring for work, but get far too many SMS's to hear an alert for all of them).
I created a silent WAV file, and set that as the ringtone for SMS's.
Then I found out there's an undocumented reminder that beeps every
couple of minutes until you acknowledge the SMS. You can't turn off
the reminder.
I opened a support case with Motorola, but they didn't have any
resolution. They said they usually update the firmware 2-3 months
after release, but they didn't commit to that, or that they would fix
the problem.
For me, the phone is unusable until (or if) Motorola fixes it with
the next release. If you already bought one, please open a support
case with Motorola. The more people that complain, the more likely
they will fix it.
