Xbox 360 "Jasper" shrinks ATI graphics to 65-nm
After Falcon, there's Jasper. At least that's how Dean Takahashi of the San Jose Mercury News claims the Xbox 360 timeline will progress. The Jasper motherboard is said to extend the 65-nm shrinkage to the ATI-built graphics chip. As the source for most of the Xbox's heat, that should make Jasper-based 360s more reliable than the existing 90-nm versions. The updated gaming rig will also pack physically smaller memory chips. With any luck, the lower material costs will hopefully be passed along to us when these pop for retail sometime around August 2008. [Via Joystiq]

Well, about RROD issues, Falcon + new heatsinks seems to make a good job !
I don't think it will worth for the GPU to shrink ...
I'll get a 360 this christmas !
i feel sorry for your impending loss...
ps3 ftw.
Unfortunately for the ps3 I can not think of any must have games off the top of my head.
*note* I did not say there arent any good games, I said, I cant think of any good games.
Ok, killzone sounds cool I will admit but its the only ps3 game I can think of while if I wanted to get a console I can think of several games i would get for xbox 360, Halo2 + 3, Mass Effect, Gears of War.
Cool! I'll wait till August 2008 then!!
Can't wait! No RROD in 2008! Sweet!
No you should wait for Jasper, That's a paddlin'
Well, I was going to swap my current 360 sooner or later to get the HDMI, but I guess it will be later if they are going to make another revision.
I still wish they'd add internal wireless, but I understand their reasons for not doing it.
R R O D ! ! !
If mine craps out again, its to the trash with it and to the store to buy a reliable console. Xbox 360 has to be the most unreliable console in history.
There are 3 things in life that are certain:
Taxes, Death and RRoD!
That's funny .. I still have a launch day console that is used on average 6 hours each day (since I used it for it's media extender capabilities as well) and it hasn't failed at all.
RROD is to a ps3 fanboy as Terrorist is to Republican.
Yes, the xbox 360 had a massive problem, but you'll see I used the word had. It's not a good reason not to buy one now. Although I'm sure a bigger heatsink won't have fixed everything, you have a very large warranty if things do go wrong.
I am not supriseed that these guy low ranked you. Try bringing this topic of the reliability of the 360 and whoa you will get slammed in the xbox forums.
I am now sending my 3rd 360 in for one purchaces and sent another in one time as well. I took great care of all 360's I have had fail. 3 were from the RROD along with video card errors or "graphical imperfections as MS rep called it.
I kept them all on top of a entertainment center with a fan blowing on the console while being in an air conditioned room.
People need to understand that the original 360 design is flawed to no end. Yes some people have been lucky to the date but time will truly tell. I bought the first 360 in 8/06 first issue was on 9/06 so I have been in this repair/refurbished process for a year now and to me it seems there is no end to it for those of us whom were forced to enter the repair process due to the mistake that the 360 is.
Microsoft should not have jumped the gate just to get the early lead that was so easily taken by a graphicly inferior system yet reliable and fun nintendo wii. I still would love to have one but hard to find.
As for the 65nm. Why has it taken so long for it to be done? why is gonna take another year to get ot a 65nm gpu? Lastly , WHen will microsoft redesign the xbox 360's suffocating air flow constricting case?
Another thing that they should think the problem is, is that maybe not having a single fan on either of the cpu or gpu heatsinks is causing the issue as well or at least exasperating it?? Who in their right mind would not put a heatsing fan on a 3 core cpu when all pc cpu dual cores use massive heatpipe sinks with 37.5 cfm fans?
To put it simple microsoft needs to implement a better cooling design or the problems may even persist with the 65nm cpu and gpu.
Could anyone kindly explain what's the big benefit of the 65nm chip? I understand that it will keep the console from getting too hot, but are there any other benefits?
Reduced production costs for M$ which will lead to cheaper consoles for consumers down the road.
August 2008? Its only oct 2007, thats a LONG wait tbh.
Cheaper to produce, less silicon to produce the same speed chip, and like you mentioned it runs cool
ps3 runs cool and thats with the power brick inside of it. Whats the problem?
Paul: Warhawk, skate, GT5, Ninja Gaiden Sigma... quite a few others also. Open your eyes.
Maybe that explains why the PS3 is not as powerful as the 360, so it doesn't produce as much heat. It also has twice the interior volume as the 360 so that would make a huge difference in itself. I do own a 360 but I plan on buying a PS3 as soon as God Of War and GT 5 comes out for it. I am a bit disappointed Sony took the "all around media machine" approach vs. giving us a dedicated super gaming machine. Oh well.
360 is not more powerful than ps3 bro... check your facts?
Um no... The PS3 is MORE powerful than the 360...
But I prefer PCs...
The 65nm chips are not only cheaper to produce, but since they are smaller, they consume less power. less power means less heat, and less heat means less breakage. as far a jasper is concerned, the source of most of the 360's hear is thought to be its graphics card. with the falcon model only the processor is 65nm. this will reduce heat to some extent but not to the extent jasper will. they are both better and more reliable, its just a matter of how long you intend to wait.
August 2008? Well, then I guess I'll finally get around to buying a 360 on September 2008, then. Yay!
don't care.
Good thing you spent the time to let us all know then, thanks.
What Microsoft needs to do is quiet down the dang DVD drive, WTF, why is it sooooooooo loud??? Read the program into the built in hard drive and stop constantly running the DVD at full speed!!!!!!!
The DVD Drive is loud? Mine runs quiet as a mouse even on full load and I do own a PC and it isn't any louder than the 2 drives I own. I suggest cranking up your sound system until your ears bleed.
I picked up a Halo 3 Console 2 weeks ago, i'm going to go check to see what Lot and manufacture date. So far i'm just using the Nyko IntercoolerEX and it helps out alot. Before the XBox would blow out a little air and it would very very hot.. probably hotter than my pc. The Xbox is very loud but I have it behind my 56' Samsun 1080p DLP so I can barely hear it. If I could cut the side panel off and not void the warranty I would do so. Just buy the Intercooler EX and move the Xbox out of the cabinet and into an open air flowing zone. Probably later down the road.. Mid/End 08 they will eventually be able to start upgrading the guts of it with faster equipment. Maybe one day these consoles will have removable/upgradeable items.
I heard that using the intercooler can actually cause problems. Don't know for sure. When I got the RROD the tech asked me if I was using one, I said no, and he told me that was good. Maybe it was just BS, but I thought I would let you know.
Yes, the older style Intercooler melted and fried the consoles due to their plastic power contacts. The new EX uses metal so there isn't any problem, the older models had a problem with vibrating off. I can tell you that this new one is hard as hell to pull off once it's on. IF you do use this and your xbox dies do not tell the company that you had it installed. It will void your warranty... also the intercool doesn't leave scratches or marks on the system. This thing to me is worth every penny because I like it running as cool as possible. If the noise is too loud just turn up the bass on your surround sound and keep pwning!
"Maybe one day these consoles will have removable/upgradeable items."
You mean like a PC?
I heard that the problem with the intercooler was because of too much additional electrical load on the 360's PSU.
Those 3 small fans do not use that much power. If the Xbox adds USB slots it means they have allocated extra power to run all three slots at once. So you can be looking Wireless adapter and 2 people charging their controllers at once. People are having mixed feelings about these coolers because the consoles are still crashing with them attached. Sorry people.. but S#$% happens. IF the power supply is being taxed too hard they will make noise immediately just like a normal PC PSU. I know personally I will always have a cooler attached to the rear end until I become a filthy millionaire. If you know of a blogspot/forum supporting the PSU stress please post it up.
well after my 1st 360 crapped out being in a air conditioned clean room by itself ontop of table, used only 4 to 6 hours per day for 3 months.. i traded it in towards a PC. and after the TONS of reports logged by the BBB and consumer reoprts website, looks like the design of the xbox 360 is flawed and the consumer must float the bill trading them out untill MS can make a new design that works.
wild the amount of numbskulls that will support ms repeatly sending in broken consoles for new ones and think ms is gold.
How is sending in broken consoles that MS is repairing at a cost actually helping them? They are footing the bill for repairs not the customer.
How is sending in broken consoles that MS is repairing at a cost actually helping them? They are footing the bill for repairs not the customer. Especially since MS has been reimbursing those who paid for repairs.
Yeah.. wouldn't that be awesome? Push out a new Xbox.. call it the Xbox "Horizon" or something gay like that. Wait 6 months or so and offer larger amounts of ram, processor(s), etc.. no offense to Xbox or Sony, but having to transfer to new system after system would get old in the future. Technology is getting pushed out so fast and quick. Who knows.. F@#$ it.. one console to rule them all!
does anyone know if "Jasper" or "Falcon" can be seen anywhere on the box? i want to get one of these (when they are available) to avoid the heat.
For people asking why it takes so long just to release a revision: when a new revision releases, even if it is just a core change, the systems have to be compatibility checked for all existing games along with hardware testing. Even small changes can lead to strange issues with games so new and old revisions all have to be tested against final releases of games to be sure compatibility is still in tact. Normally only major revisions cause an issue, but even small changes can occasional cause hiccups.
