iPhone v1.1.1 baseband downgrade released

For those following this stuff religiously: the iPhone "Elite" Team has released a method to downgrade the baseband on v1.1.1 iPhones. Ok, that basically means if you accidentally disabled the phone end of your iPhone with anySIM or iUnlock during the upgrade (or just decided v1.0.2 is where it's at), now you can revert to the last working version and restore order to your iPhone's wayward cell radio. Right, for free without paying iPhoneSimFree a cent for their unbricking solution. Alright, maybe you don't care about any of this stuff -- honestly, we don't blame you. Anyway, it's out there, so for those in the crowd who've been waiting for this -- and judging by our tips, that's a lot of you -- enjoy.

so would this theoretically mean that someone with a bricked iphone running 1.1.1 can downgrade to 1.0.2, and then reupgrade to a working version of 1.1.1? (assuming they already use at&t and only unlocked their phone for international roaming or something)

ahh, excellent! Although I never "upgraded" to 1.1.1, I'm glad they did this.

For the foreseeable future (IMHO), this is definitely the solution. Just stick with 1.0.2 and continue developing apps for it. Otherwise, its definitely a losing battle.

Since 1.0.2 doesn't have any super super major bugs, I'd say it's okay to continue using 1.0.2 for a LONG time to come.

Now just integrate this with the actual FW downgrade as well, make it a one-click GUI solution, and it'll be great for all the noobs who kind of screwed themselves by "up" grading without thinking first.

a bit harsh, paul, IMO... while you'd like to call them "n00bs" (i like to call them "brave testers"), if it weren't for them youl'd never know the benefits/downfalls of an upgrade

There Just as there are those who use -stable and those who use -current, there are those who wait until they know that the software is going to work first, and those who will blindly hit the upgrade button like a cocaine addled lab rat banging on their dispenser bar.

There are adventurous, knowledgeable, intrepid souls (who know what the heck they are doing) that go forth and download that upgrade so that they may make better the lot of the apple fanboy. To these fine people we salute and give many of the fine mad props! Others less skilled and brave, however are advised against such exercise.

There is a difference between grasping a rope and leaping into the pit of the unknown and simply falling in ass over teakettle because you were busy texting someone and weren't looking where you were going.

In all fairness it is expected these days for upgrades to generally be good things. One must remember that in iPhone land what comes out of the hopper lately is less likely to be a food pellet than one "previously eaten"

I didn't mean that everyone who upgraded was automatically a noob ;-)

I just meant those who didn't know the risks and what they were doing exactly. They just blindly hit that upgrade button.

Big difference from an informed tester. I aboslutely do indeed appreciate the efforts and sacrifices of all testers.

For those of us who are currently on unlocked 1.0.2 and never attempted to upgrade, does using this technique make it safe to upgrade to 1.1.1? I realize it'd mean losing the SIM unlock, but is this finally the "virginization" for the iPhone we've been waiting for?

I suspect this will depend on the exact nature of the iPhone hymen as it were. People work fast regarding this issue though so I suspect someone is well on their way to third base.

Please can somebody tell me why every little thing to do with the iphone is still being reported here? Is this a general gadget site or an iphone support site? Fair enough that major stuff gets an event of it's own but it's just getting silly. I used to really like engadget but it's getting kinda boring having my screen filled with one device day after day after day. The device is out, surely all these support issues are getting dealt with on sites better aimed at that?

We're all glad that you took the time to sound off about the iPhone posts. But if you don't want to read about it, SKIP THE DAMN ARTICLE!

I think that (even though you say you don't want to read about it) that you actually do want to see posts about it. Otherwise, why would you have even bothered stoping by to comment.

I don't read every post on Engadget; I look at the ones interesting to me. But you don't hear me bitching about the posts that I don't like. If you want to read a blog with posts that are only relevant to you, then start your own.

Like it or hate it, the iPhone was one of the biggest, most anticipated gadgets this year. There is a lot of controversy surrounding it, with the unlocking/hacking/bricking, so you can expect lots of posts about it.

You already have the option of an Apple free feed. I suggest using it and shutting the f*ck up already.
