Apple said to be prepping Boot Camp fix for 24-inch iMacs

It looks like those that took advantage of the now-discounted 24-inch iMac's upgradable graphics only to be stymied by problems with Boot Camp may finally be getting a fix courtesy of Apple, although that's apparently still far from a sure thing. According to AppleInsider, Apple has in fact been "secretly testing" a software patch for the problem, which prevented users with certain graphics cards from booting into Windows using Boot Camp, but an actual release will depend on whether testers can isolate a few "remaining bugs." As AppleInsider points out, however, that process could well be pushed down the list of priorities for the company, what with another little piece of software supposedly nearing a release.

I thought Leopard was coming with integrated Boot Camp support. Assuming it works correctly, woulddn't the smarter course to be just back-port the software? Either that or force all the Tiger users to cough up like $129 for Leopard.
dude, boot camp is part of leopard, and apple needs to fix this bug before or at the same time of the leopard release
Since this part of Leopard, does this mean Apple could delay the October 26th release?
they never said it would be the 26th. thats just what people keep saying.
Apple did say that Leopard would be released in October. To be fair, they have a little over 2 weeks (incl. weekends) to go GOLD and release in the retail channels.
You think they will make it?
I have a 24" iMac which I am typing this from and never had a problem with Boot Camp. Of course now after 15 years using Windows I cannot describe how good I think this Mac is. Not perfect but blody close and I have ditched Vista and all it's problems to become a fully fledged tree hugger.
I have a 20" Sony Vaio and never had a problem with many of my programs. Of course, after 7 years of using Windows, I cannot describe how Vista actually runs like a speedy efficient train and makes using my Vaio a whole lot easier. Not perfect, but pretty close and I have ditched OS X Tiger and all it's incompatibilities to become a fully pledged tree hugger.
Does anybody seriously care? No. That's one of the things I don't like about you guys. Bragging seems to be the name of the game when you own a Mac. Well I have one too, but I don't find myself needing to brag. Thank you very much. I happen to be quite normal, and not over-obsess with products.
Plus how does loving your Mac make you a tree hugger? Apple isn't exactly known for it's eco-friendliness with the use of tons of plastic, and in older versions, lead and other chemicals. Plus the fact that iPods happen to be known to be breakable every so often, than other PMP's.
Just my thoughts of your zealous comment.
What problems in Vista do you speak of? I haven't had any real problems, maybe a slight hiccup but nothing like you Microsoft-Haters go on about.
Michael, it's what we call humor, a joke, nothing to be taken seriously.
STFU Michael
I guess it is only ok to like what you have as long as it isn't Apple products.
Stop being a dick online & go back to beating your wife.
@ sickening...
btw, he's talking about people like you buddy.
@Brian: Nothing you said was inappropriate. Some people just enjoy being assholes.
@Michael: Yeah, you are being a dickhead.
@sickening: You're the biggest dickhead. "go back to beating your wife"?!?!? What is wrong with you? That has to be one of the most deplorable comments I have ever seen. If the guy is an abuser, what you are saying is abhorrent, irresponsible, and disgusting. And if he's not an abuser, it's still abhorrent and disgusting.
@Slvrgun: Umm, the funny about Vista is its biggest flaw, the same flaw spewed by Apple-haters on Mac. Except, the Mac doesn't suffer nearly as much as Vista. If you want to upgrade, you need to buy a whole new system. It's way worse for Vista, since you'll need to spend more than $2000 to get all the features to work. Vista needs three times the computing power to use the same features it's ripped off from Mac and other developers. It's a joke, and consumers are the ones getting screwed. I really think Microsoft fanboys are hypocrites when comparing Wintel to Mac. It's sad.

I think you better go look up the definition of "Tree Hugger." Apple's environmental record isn't exactly "Tree Hugging." :)
Sure it is. Using a COMPUTER isn't exactly "tree hugging", but Apple is leading the pack on eco-friendly computers. There are those out there however, that inevitably draw furious attention to where they could do better. Having a simplified product line makes it easier to point out problems. Do your homework, don't just read headlines. The last story about Energy Star Compliance was bogus. I had to read into the original blog and check out the Energy Star database files to realize their regulations didn't even apply to Apple's line until next year.
Also worth noting, one of the "problems" with the iMac line, is in comparing its power consumption to the power consumption of a computer WITHOUT a built-in monitor. Problems, problems. Again, you have to actually do more than read headlines.
Again, Apple hasn't been the most environmental friendly companies in the past. In fact, considered one of the worst which is why they have committed to doing better.
As far as power consumption, I treat the iMac's has a big ass laptop.

"It just works"
Awesome.
Dumbass!! Boot camp is "Beta" software. When Leopard ships it will be final. Save your stupid comments for when the software is finalized. Beta means it won't just work, there will be bugs and that is why it is still beta, if it "Just Worked" they would call it final or golden master. Oh, and by the way, the bugs are on the windows side. The drivers in windows have the problems. This really has nothing to do with the mac, except for that apple is making the drivers. So the "It Just Works" tag line doesn't even apply here. Apple never said "It just works" regarding every single product they make they were talking about the mac, not the beta software that allows you to dual boot into windows. I am not trying to be a fanboi here I just get sick of people making stupid ass comments about non issues just to hype shit up. I feel the same way about this happening about anything else so please don't make another stupid ass response of "Fanboi" because I am not. I am just anti dumbass, so I am targeting you because you are a dumbass!
I don't even know why this is news on Engadget. Do they ever post when microsoft releases bug fixes for windows or security patches, I can't remember the last time they posted about software updates on the windows world. I wonder why they post this stuff about Macs. I thought this site was more about hardware and not software. Oh well, the mysteries of the world I guess.
umm.... they do cover it when microsoft releases patches.

Apple is about 5% of the OS install base yet make up 50% of engadget posts and 100% of evangelical OS fawnings. I guess you guys are so insecure in your purchase that you need to toot your stupid apple horn every chance you get. The funny thing is that if apple ever gets more market share you guys would just hip onto the next trendy OS to use.. cause being different is part of the apple experience along with shoddy products.
STFU GOREtex
you obviously know as much about computers as you do about women.
Go have yourself a jerk & come back once you're less wound up.
Are you reading the same website as me? Any apple related post contains about 50 idiots stating "Macs Suck" or I hate apple, most of which come from people who have never owned macs. Yes, mac users usually do reply to some of those posts because as you stated apple only has about 5% market share and most people have never had that much experience with macs, and most anti apple comments are coming from people un-educated on the subject. I don't generally see posts from mac users just out of the blue saying "Macs are so great, everything else sucks" when they are not provoked first. Please read the posts in this article itself, I don't really see anyone saying how great macs are, just one guy saying he doesn't have the reported problem. Is there something wrong with that? I use macs and PC's, I tend to use my mac more often because I like it better. I don't usually go around broadcasting that but when people like you say things like "inferior products" I think to myself "really? has he ever used one for any length of time? how about owned one?" The answer is usually no, you are just spouting propoganda because you are trying to make yourself feel better about your windows based purchase or you have a small dick and like to put other people down, I don't know which one. I have been the manager of a computer repair department for the last 10 years repairing name brand PC's and Macs. If you wan't to know the different build qualities of computers and which ones suck I will gladly list them out and the known issues with each model, yes macs do have some problems, as all man made products do. They are by no means bad computers in relation to name brand PC's, in fact they are quite a bit better. They use better plastics, and much more thought and effor is put into how they are design and built. Just because apple gets more press when something goes wrong does not mean they are worse, people just like jumping on the bash apple bandwagon. Just look at any consumer reports article or customer satisfaction survey, apple is always either 1st or at least in the top 2. You can't tell me that is because every mac user is blinded by steve job's reality distortion field. People who have used macs and PCs both don't generally say macs suck, just my experience.
@tanner: I have used both macs and PCs, my school district has some deal with them to buy apple products for beans, and I think they suck. I would never want one, mainly because of the fact that they are brand Nazis. I think the VERY recent iPhone "scandal" is proof of this.
Oh, and also @tanner, if you read anything about microsoft on engadget a significant portion of the comments involve "M$" or "Microsuck" or some other "clever" variation. If that's not unprovoked, I don't know what is.
Tanner, consumer reports shows no statistically significant reliability difference between apple notebooks and those of most other name brands. Oh, and do you really think windows crashes with regularity any more? You're one to rag on people for not using the OS they're bashing...
I have both Macs, mac books, Del PC's, Sony Laptops, And I say Mac's suck. So there and I am have been using computers since the first IBM PC, Just to make it clear Macs Suck.
Wow, that is a lot of computers for one person. Care to let us know why you think that, or is just a dumb sounding blanket statement "your style". Does a Mac not do what you want, do they crash a lot? Care to back up your statement with some type of anecdote or fact? If you want to say that you prefer windows over macs I don't think you need to back that up with anything, that is just stating your preferrence. If however, you state that something sucks I think it would be a dis-service to everyone reading your post if you don't warn them about why this particular products "sucks" as you so elequently put it. I really would like to hear your experiences. Keep in mind that there is a difference between something "sucking" and you just not being familiar with it. If you have used windows your whole life and have dabbled with the mac a few times there will be things that you are not familliar with. If you have legitimate concerns with the Macintosh line please let us know what they are so you can educate people on the subject.
I have used both mac and pc everyday and I say mac sucks. It treat me like a retard old guy who can't do the simplest task.Mac fanboy say windows always has update. have you ever seen an update on mac, the friking thing come out like once every 2 weeks and would always be in the 60MB rage. Here's a picture of my work place to show you that I'm not lying when I say I work with mac everyday
http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n130/dhlt25/workplace/IMG_0328.jpg
OH MY GOD!
I feel your pain brother.
that's what the "computer" labs at my school look like.
Dude, the updates on the mac are not for just the OS. They also update iLife, iTunes, iWork and any other software apple makes. You are comparing 2 different things entirely. Are you saying that apple has bigger and more updates than microsoft when it comes to just the OS? I guess that is a legitimate complaint but I certainly like updating my computer and at least when apple updates something it asks you if you want to or not, you don't have to update if you don't want to, unlike last month when microsoft pushed an update out without telling it's users, they just installed it on computers without letting the user choose. How does a mac treat you like a retard, what won't they let you do? You make statements like that but you don't say how, when you do that your opinion is worth about as much as the corn filled shit I took last night. Back up your statement with at least one fact for anyone to take you seriously.
Hmm...you are a little misinformed. The reality is you have MUCH more control on a Mac than a Windows machine. If you learn how to use the shell, you can do absolutely anything you want. There is hardly anything I cannot run on my Mac. I have Windows on Parallels for games like Medal of Honor and Call of Duty (things I bought when I had a Windows box). And with X11, I can run all the open source software available. Th fact is with a Mac, I can have it all. I can use all the Windows programs, all the Mac programs, and all the Linux programs. Even more, the thing doesn't crash once a week, or even once a month, like crappy Wintel boxes.
I am so done and fed up with running Windows for everything. It's a mess. I'll use it for what I absolutely cannot do on my Mac, mostly old games I already had in my library, and nothing else.
For a shell-savvy individual, there is not better day-to-day working platform than Mac OS X. And for someone who is not computer-savvy, why in the world would you want to fight with draining anti-virus software, non-stop adware and malware, an overflowing system tray filled with resource-sucking useless background programs. Windows is a nightmare for the average user. For a power user, it's a periodic pain in the ass. I would rather stop fighting with an expensive machine purchased to make my life easier, not harder.
Gian
Hmmm... that's interesting. apple working hard to make something besides their own software run on their hardware.
Too bad iphone does not get the same love.
Neither Macs nor PCs suck. They're just different. And both exist so as to give consumers more choices in regards to their computing experience. The thing that really sucks is the grossly immature bickering that goes on every time their is a Mac/PC comparison.
Grow up people.
to be clear... I'm not the same carl as the one who submitted the first two comments. Like anyone cares. 'cept maybe carl part 1.
Now I'm really confusing the situation. God I suck at the internet.
what kind of iMac is meant ? the "old" 24" white iMac or the "new" silver/black iMac ? - kind regards
The picture of the white iMac and the content of the "read" link should be a clue :
"Exclusive: Apple is secretly testing an update for its white 24-inch iMacs [...]"
;-)
What I want to know is why the Apple haters are so obnoxious. We get it. You don't like Apple or Mac OS X or anything having to do with Apple for some reason... So why do you read Apple articles and comment on them?
Seriously-- This is borderline psychotic behavior.
I don't like Domino's Pizza, but I don't walk into every Domino's I see to yell at the employees and customers.
I don't like Hummers, but I don't look for Hummer dealerships and tell the people there what I think of them.
Sure, if someone brings something up in a conversation I happen to be involved with, I'll mention my dislike and cite my reasons, but to actually ACTIVELY seek out a forum for something you don't like and don't use, and then spew insults? That's fucking nuts.
Do you guys interrupt kids' birthday parties to complain about how you don't like magic shows? Do you kick certain breeds of dogs and insult their owners because you don't happen to be a fan? Do you show up to watch sports you don't like just so you can scream about how much you hate them?
You're a bunch of insane, stupid, fucked-up retards. I weep for the general state of society at large if you're representative of what's out there.
Get a life!
Okay for all the Microsoft Haters that just love to Bash Vista, and talk about how you need a whole new system to run it, that's just completely false. In fact with a couple of minor upgrades your Vista experience will blow away your XP or OSX experience.
In 2004 I started College with a 3ghz P4wHT, a 160 gb HDD, 512 MB of Ram, and a X700pro pci-E graphics card. Not exactly a gaming rig, mind you but in 2004 it was not a bad machine. In 2007, I decided to see what the big deal was over Vista. I had previously over the years bought 1GB of ram, a 300gb HDD, and a Pentium D 3.0 GHz CPU. I installed Vista Ultimate and it ran blazingly fast and even with my old graphics card I was still able to manage a 4.7 Windows experience (the highest is 5.7 I believe). So with that said even with my relatively old rig (Pentium Ds and X700pros are dirt cheap~ 150 buck max together) I am able to do lots of multitasking and whatever. Vista is a great OS. Stop with the hating.
I wish all the bickering would stop between the fanboys (and fangirl, yes one fangirl).
I have an idea, let's talk about Boot Camp since that's what this post is about!! Gasp!
Hopefully they change the name of Boot Camp to something else when it's done.
Bootcamp should be called "Not Enough", for those times when OSX is simply not enough.
WHY IS THIS TURNING INTO A MAC SUCKS/PC SUCKS THREAD?!
I haven't had a single problem using BootCamp or Parallels on my white iMac 24". I wonder what there is to fix?
The fix is for people who have upgraded their video card. Boot camp will support an out-of-box system.
