British Government to study health effects of WiFi
Normally, the news that a study into the dangerousness of WiFi signals was to take place would provoke groans of disappointment from these pages: however, the British Government's statement that such a study is going to take place is a somewhat calming development. The Health Protection Agency, the group tasked with staging the study, will aim for the study to be "systematic" -- alternatively meaning "final," "definitive," and "complete" -- with all areas of potential dangerousness being investigated, with the opening remarks from the chief executive of the agency including affirmations that no evidence has previously been found that 2.4GHz WiFi frequencies cause danger. Schools will not turn off their routers while the study takes place, and the results are expected to be "reassuring." Sanity has won this battle it seems.

The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence!
@Nathan. No, he's right. I tripped on mine in the dark last night and broke my ankle. That REALLY hurt.
How many times have we heard that cell phones do no harm, then that they do harm indeed, then again that it's all bullshit. We'll never know, until we'll have some strange symptoms coming out of nowhere, or maybe we won't, and it will be a lot better that way.
There's the one side that sponsors scientist to say "no" and on the other side scientist who say "yes", I mean EXXON spent a huge sum to found global warming sceptics... well at least as long as they could somehow do it...
We'll probably never know.
Or maybe there's enough pieces of the puzzle out there to get a fair picture of what are the risks, if there are any.
personally I'd much prefer it, if wifi and cell phones would be just plain harmless stuff, but if it isn't, then I'd like to know it.
If anybody has some real data, I'm interested, but just saying: "I've learned in science class that it's safe" is a not really a scientific way to prove anything.
If you can get a hold of it, the book "Voodoo Science" has an excellent round-up for the general public on EM "radiation" studies (mostly from the 80's 'power lines cause cancer' scare) and why they were (and are) a complete and utter waste of time.
You are not being harmed by your router.
None of which I can argue with!
First of all, If you think your precious little technology is doing you any harm you must be a hypochondriac. (maybe us stupid americans need to look that word up)
Second, George Bush was voted in by the smarter Americans who realized he was the lesser of two evils. The headaches are most likely from the brightness of the screen and due to your surroundings. WiFi has always been around, even in prehistoric ages but just recently humans have harnessed its power. Just because
Let me finish my statement. Just becuse WiFi has never been known of before doesn't mean it wasn't out there before. Humans don't know everything...
It will never ever cease to amaze me how ignorant people can be. Note to idiots: Just because you LIKE something doesn't mean it's harmless!
By now I'd expect us to be a little more reticent to take anything as a given. I personally cannot think of anything we took for granted before wifi that was harmless. Smoking, cars, tanning, fast food.. nothing. Why would this be any different.
We, in a very short amount of time, have filled the entire atmosphere of the world with radio waves in a million different bandwidths. That CANNOT be harmless. I'm sure they will find that out soon, or have already, but won't say anything because the cell phone companies pay them millions not to.
Frankly, it's this simple to me. Put your cellphone near a speaker or a computer mouse when you are receiving a call. The "weak" signal causes feedback in insulated wires and scrambles signals. How can something strong enough to cause an interference in an insulated electrical current be harmless?
are you serious?
You clearly have little to no understanding of electromagnetism or the effects of non-ionizing radiation on biology.
how does RF interference on a speaker connect to health of a human?
you provide no evidence what so ever to back your fears that this must be bad
(even though it does sound terrible when cell phones are put next to speakers)
Seriously, there is nothing to worry about, Radio waves are not only harmless, they don't care about us, they just move right through us like we aren't even here.
You are dumb. You are applying the same "logic", if one could call it that, in your argument. Just substitute the word "dislike" for "like".
The fact is that there is a great body of research that there is no danger posed to human health by radio waves. NONE. You position is supported not by any research, but by ignorance and irrational fear-mongering.
We funded this study already in the US. It wasted a half-billion dollars and 10+ years of research into the causes of cancer that could have been spent elsewhere - all because people like you are afraid of the things you are too lazy to understand. Looks like the UK now has a few hundred million euros to waste as well. Enjoy the purchase of your completely useless research, folks.
You seem like a perfect customer for this:

Insane. Inane. And perfect for your "holy shizzle, the EMFs are coming for my brain!" lifestyle.
"The greatest contribution to the British economy is tuition fees paid foreign students studying in the UK."
I literally cried with laughter at this. Thanks.
i think i would rather not know if wifi is bad for me, because i can't live without it.
I'll go ahead and help you then: It isn't, unless you are beaming microwaves through your home.
And no, you aren't :).
1, Charles, Your information is wrong. Education isn't the biggest sector in the UK economy your writing absolute rubbish! I suspect your just trolling about. Look at the The Blue Book 2006 for more detailed info.
2, This report is a good thing and I trust the British Government to do a good job. They aren't trying to panic people, they are saying that they should continue to use WiFi. I think they just want resolve this issue once and for all, well done British Government (that's not something I say everyday)!
omg, well at least they are being systematic about these things. Anyone with an ounce of knowledge about physics knows that the only radiation which can cause harm is ionising radiation thats the type which causes health problems as it knocks atoms out of molecules in DNA causing mutations in cells and ultimately cancer. Radiation emitted from wi-fi, mobile phones hell even radio and television transmitters poses no risk to any biological life (as its not ionising, it just passes through, its a wave form not a particle!) forms which is the conclusion I am willing to bet a lot on this study coming to.
I could rant forever about this subject, it's always the scientifically ignorant and gullible who fall for such claims, usually evoking a reaction to buy some expensive "gadget" which they believe will fix things when in truth its just a scam to make money from the stupid and ignorant.
