5G iPods hacked to run updated interface
It looks like those 5G and 5.5G iPods owners out there that have been feeling a little envious of the iPod classic's slick new interface now have at least one option at their disposal to give their player a bit of a facelift, although it seems that only the most fearless need apply. While it doesn't go so far as to add the much-vaunted Cover Flow, the newly-released and entirely unofficial firmware hack (which ironically requires the Windows-only iPodWizard software) does seem to mimic most of the features in the latest interface, including the split screen design, and the revised now playing screen. Not surprisingly, a number of users have reported that the hack has bricked their precious iPods, so you may want to reconsider your distaste for you iPod's current interface -- at least until all the kinks are worked out.

this was bound to happen. to bad it doesn't look as good as in the classic.
its not a true update to the firmware. It's a Classic LIKE hack.
You cant brick an iPod by writing the firmware to it... you can always, ALWAYS go into disk mode and restore...
I ran the upgrade and now my iPod goes through a cycle at the white logo on black screen where the screen gets bright, the iPod makes a clicking sound, dims, and does it all over again.
It doesn't completely brick your iPod, you can go into a continuous reboot, which is easy to get out of, or you'll get the plug picture on the iPod. Both you just need to reset the iPod itself. At least thats what I had to do.
It's not a complete firmware switch, it's only a really well put together vamped theme.
After trying the Classic theme I think I'll just stick with the Dark Tribal one I've been using also from the iPod Wizard site.
Take it from me, since I was one of the developers of it and all.
This cannot, and will not brick your iPod.
The worst case scenario is an endless reboot. It can be solved by holding the center+play button while it's booting, and it will boot into disk mode.
Drag your music/videos/whatever onto your desktop, and restore via iTunes.
(Or if you were smart and made a backup using iPodWizard, you can just load it and not have to restore at all.)
Its true, I know because I've been with this the whole time, even back when everyone said the 5g ver was the 5.5 it worked for me, its all about doing right and double checking, if you do it right you should have no hiccups at all, I have hacked my pod many times to no avail and never had a problem (ok maybe one, but it was easily fixed!) PS: Thanks again Driven, I really appreciate all yours and the rest of the devs hard work on this!
Driven is quite right, Me being an older member of iPodWizard has tried this firmware hack out and it doesnt brick your ipod. Just a continuous loop.
Backing up your firmware first though is a good suggestion which i believe you can read about at the iPodWizard WIKI. Or just asking one of the iPW Staff or experienced members.

I tried it on my 5.5G, and it worked perfectly, except for a little snafu where the menu fills the whole screen for half a second between menus. But it didn't brick, and I'm 14 and I got this thing to work, so you should too.
Ya, I'm 13 and have been talking to the devs the whole process, it was a piece of cake to install, just need to know how!
does anyone know where do i need to go to get the files for it to work
cant believe no ones commented on the song thats playing.
its quite good.
Is it like, a rock song? Or soft music, cuz i might download it.
Yes, Funeral For A Friend is quite an awesome band.
I tried this (JUst for Fun, it didn't brick my iPod and I used alterpod for mac to do this
hey driver thanks so much! i got into this and thought it was bricked, i didn't know about the center+play reset feature. you just save me 200 bucks i was going to buy on a zune... ah well maybe you didn't save me too much lol. how could you go about with this hack without it being pushed into the endless reboot debacle?
does anyone know how to use the software
I guess I want a 5.5G ipod with a 160Gb disk and Rockbox. Seems like the Classic was a step backwards with the one exception being the big disk.

And try not to spam the forums, read the Wiki.
I'll just stick with Rockbox.
i downloaded this put it on my 80 gig 5.5g and it works great. The only problem is it is slow in between menus
