The 16GB iPhone? Nope, don't be a fool
While we're pretty certain a 16GB iPhone is on the way given the recent emergence of the 16GB iPod touch -- this ain't it. Posted in the user forums at MacRumors and making its way around the interwebs is this supposed 16GB iPhone purported to have just arrived at an Apple store. The jockeys at MacRumors have already pretty much debunked:
[Thanks, Ginger.al]

- The box is using the old Calculator icon even though the firmware is supposedly version 1.1.2
- The iTunes WiFi icon on the box is warped
- Exif data shows a timestamp of 5 days ago (why sit on a scoop for 5 days before posting?)
- Noise is too uniform in the supposed cameraphone picture
- And finally, here's the original iPhone about page before being 'shopped!

Then why report this ??? Why dont you report that 1.1.1 iphones can be downgraded and unlocked now or something. thats much more interesting then a news story you report simply to prove its false???
Thomas Ricker @ Oct 15th 2007 5:06AM
@kerimeton,
Sometimes we have to debunk. We've been getting hit all morning with "ZOMG!!! 16GB iPhone" tips. Sometimes the act of clearing up misinformation is newsworthy.

craig @ Oct 15th 2007 10:34AM
Sometimes you have to debunk, Thomas? I thought this was a gadget news site, not a rumor overlord site. Why would Engadget have any concern one way or another on such a petty rumor? It's sad that you feel it more important to participate in Apple rumors for revenue than to stick to your original mission.
Imagining a 16GB iPhone isn't hard; what would be newsworthy would be a ship date.
Shermie @ Oct 15th 2007 6:08PM
Probably to try to squash the rumors. How many times can they report 1.1.1. We all know about that, but I would rather have an intelligent conversation about the possibility of a 16GB iPhone and possible dates. This kind of buzz gets back to the other manufactures and makes them step up their game to stay competitive. It also doesn't make us look like a fool reiterating fals news.
nxtiak @ Oct 15th 2007 5:00AM
Was going to write the same thing, why even report/post about it?
shamrock593 @ Oct 15th 2007 5:04AM
"'Nuff said, eh?"
Why post it then?
Andir3.0 @ Oct 15th 2007 8:30AM
You know... I've been thinking about this. If you don't like it, who cares? The day you buy the blog or start paying them is the day when you can complain about the content.
craig @ Oct 15th 2007 10:35AM
...and, Andir, if you don't like the complaints then don't read them. The beauty of a blog is that it goes both ways. Sorry not all the content is to your personal liking.

He also forgot to change the time 4:58 PM. He could have atleast taken 2 different pictures... even the lighting/highlights are exactly the same.
brent @ Oct 15th 2007 5:52AM
This is offical.. You apple fans just dont want to admit that Steve Jobs will announce 16gb iphone, price it the same as the current 8gb iphone, then he'll knock another $200 off the price of the 8gb...
:)
Nick @ Oct 15th 2007 9:29AM
hey I like apple.. and if that were the case id say SWEET! but when it does get introduced its gonna get introduced back up at the 8GB's original price point.
jomi294 @ Oct 15th 2007 6:35AM
I find it funny when people say:
"Why post about this?"
I always ask myself, why in the hell if people find it so insignificant go onto detail read it and not to mention bother commenting?
You know you are not obligated to click on something that so clearly is not in any interest to you.
kerimeton @ Oct 15th 2007 8:14AM
wow your really cool.
Leonardo Calzoni @ Oct 15th 2007 7:13AM
Totally fake!
the 16GB is really coming but this aint the first one in the wild...
The apple software is usually 700-800 megabyte on their iphones. So if this baby has 0 songs, 0 videos, 0 everything how come out of 16GB capacity it only has 14.4GB left?
Who ever photoshopped that did it bad and is an idiot ;)
Leo
Mike @ Oct 15th 2007 8:28AM
you don't realize that hard drive always format less than their actual stated capacity right?
Leonardo Calzoni @ Oct 15th 2007 12:22PM
But then why does a a 8GB iPhone have 7.3GB available and a 16GB iPhone have 14.4GB available when both are empty and using the same software..
Whats your point?

Paul @ Oct 15th 2007 7:15AM
I don't get why Engadget reports this crap. No one cares about the functionality-deprived piece of crap that people call the iPhone.
Gus @ Oct 15th 2007 7:17AM
wow... do u just get a kick outta saying stupid things and attract haters? are u really such an attention seeker?
David Clark @ Oct 15th 2007 7:57AM
Not 16 gigs, but 14.4.
(Just a shout out of my annoyance that a approximately a gig of space on my new touch is friggin' OS.)
Leonard Nimrod @ Oct 15th 2007 8:51AM
I believe Flash uses Base-10 for capacity rating, like HDD do. In other words, 8 billion bytes of data is 7.3465450000GB according to the OS which uses Base-8.
The use of Base-10 for capacity is purely for marketing reasons.
Jaxim @ Oct 15th 2007 8:21AM
I'm still waiting for the iPhone to have 32GB before even considering buying one.
Michael @ Oct 15th 2007 8:24AM
Wake me up when they get to 32.
Leonard Nimrod @ Oct 15th 2007 8:58AM
And by then you'll be saying, "Wake me up when they get to 128."
Michael @ Oct 15th 2007 11:55AM
No I'd be pretty happy with 32. I still use my 30gig iPod without any desire to upgrade to the classic.
Razor @ Oct 15th 2007 4:10PM
And here I thought i was the only one still using a 3G model!
Michael @ Oct 15th 2007 4:43PM
That would be a 30gig Video iPod (5G)
I didn't buy-in until video support came along.
tylersmyler @ Oct 15th 2007 9:46AM
16 Gigs = 14.4 after the partition. haven't you ever bought an 80GB HD taken it home only to have it say 71.1 gb
REGARDLESS... Endgaget, for the last few days I have been noticing a trend of insignificant news. Really, what happened to the good ol' days. Or is nothing actually happening anymore with technology news..
Nathan Kwarta @ Oct 15th 2007 9:50AM
i am just waiting for a >16 gb ipod touch to come out next year. I still have a 4th gen 20gb ipod photo and its running on its last leg. i hope it lasts at least one more year.
HineyWipe @ Oct 15th 2007 10:43AM
'Shopped or not, what this does provoke in thought is "Why didn't Apple release a 32G iPhone or iPod touch?" The technology is there with SSDs. Form over function...meh.
PK @ Oct 15th 2007 1:32PM
I don't think it's so much "form over function" as it is "price over capacity." When the iPhone was being designed and initially manufactured, flash memory was a good deal more expensive than it is today. You can get a 32 GB SSD for about $300 today, but that's still more expensive than the *total* component costs of the iPhone back in June (then estimated at $265). If Apple tried to sell a 32 GB iPhone back in June with their traditional markup the device would cost so much that it wouldn't make any dent in the market share of much more popular cheaper, less-storage filled phones. And a 32 GB iPod touch would cost so much that no one would buy it when a cheaper, HDD-based iPod with more storage would be a better option. By starting with 8 GB Apple keeps the prices lower, keeps their profits, and gains customers.
CALI @ Oct 16th 2007 9:15AM
How about too expensive???
Michael Smith @ Oct 15th 2007 11:47AM
How does one get their name next to the iphone as in those pictures? i.e Robby's iPhone.
kerimeton @ Oct 15th 2007 11:56AM
probably in itunes, just like for other ipods

Have you guys noticed the EDGE data speeds are actually quicker depending on how you hold the device. The antenna is improperly placed and causes slow EDGE speeds. Dont believe me? go to this site
http://www.inetworktest.com/
You can test your edge speed. When holding the device in your hand (normally) my edge speeds maxed out at about 98kbps...when not holding the device in my nads at all or holding it with two fingers below home button and above top speaker my speeds where around 190kbps!!!!
I was amazed that the antenna was actually misplaced this bad.
As for the news post-- Well, its turned towards apple since the iphone release and that means anything and everything iphone/apple. Im used to it by now. The Apple free RSS feeds are not updated reguarly. All in all I think the antenna placement is more important news than a alleged 16gb iphone in the wild. We all know the 16gb iphone is coming. Just a matter of when.
PK @ Oct 15th 2007 1:01PM
How the hell do you hold your iPhone in your nads? That's one touchscreen I hope to never see...
John M @ Oct 15th 2007 1:28PM
lmao...whoops...hands
Thats funny... Not my nads sorry
Phil @ Nov 19th 2007 4:01AM
Actually, hand placement has no bearing on EDGE speed. The speed of the EDGE network fluctuates constantly even when you stand in the same spot. I performed 10 network tests holding the iPhone like I was talking on the phone and 10 network tests holding the iPhone at the corner by the Home button. Out of those results:
Holding normally: 192.9 - 214.4 - 164.1 - 169 - 180.1 - 232 - 182.3 - 240.8 - 182.3 - 208.7
Holding at corner: 156.6 - 211.4 - 198.7 - 122.4 - 212.5 - 219.7 - 186.5 - 187.7 - 187.5 - 230
Average speed holding normally: 196.66
Average speed holding at corner: 191.3
So you might say that it's slower holding it by the corner. Again, it makes no difference how you hold it, it's just how EDGE works. It sucks!

Well, HELLO MCFLY! Has anyone noticed that the glare on both screens is exactly the same??? Look at the reflection on the screens as well, THE SAME! Not to mention the Angles. My bet is, the person who posted this, knows nothing about photoshop and croping. He would have been more convincing had there been no blur and at least put in some fake serial numbers.
NG @ Oct 15th 2007 2:54PM
it's nearly impossible to have 2 same lightling reflection with 2 different items by snap shot..
besides, the 16gb pic is blurry (means he moved will taking the pic) and now look at the reflection... same as the 8gb
= FAKE

Is it just me, or does the uniformity of the grain look alot like Photoshop mono noise?
lycanity @ Oct 16th 2007 1:46AM
Well I just had to find out so I took the image and selected the supposed version number. I then applied an Unsharp Mask with the following parameters:
Amount: 500%
Radius: 1.0 pixel
Threshold: 0 levels
And strangely enough, except for the initial two numbers i.e. "1.1" the numbers 2 and beyond looked very different from the rest of the image. This is not 100% fool proof but it shows the image has been tampered with.

Reason #5 you know it's a fake: 5 bars and full Wi-Fi!
iPodWebber @ Oct 16th 2007 11:16AM
Well would they try to do this to people to trick them??? I just wait until I hear word from apple on a 16GB iPhone. For now I just be using my ipod and iphone for more movie and music downloads http://www.ipodtunesdownloads.com
iPodder @ Oct 16th 2007 3:29PM
Why would someone want to get out new of a new iphone before it released. It just useless if ya ask me. For now keep my iphone as it is and I be using both my ipod and iphone for more music and movie downloads at http://www.ipodtunesdownloads.com
