Leopard release: October 26th
If you're one of the many speculating the release date for Apple's next version of OS X, Leopard, you can tick the other 10 of the remaining 11 business days left on the October calendar because it's finally official: Mac OS 10.5 launches Friday, October 26th at 6.00pm, and may we just say friggin finally. Minimum specs: Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor with 512MB of physical RAM. $129 for a single-user copy or $199 for a 5-user, single-residence family pack. Upgrade price? You're kidding, right... this is Apple.

NeXTstep FTW!
Might try Linux with GNUstep?
Yawn. Wake me when the Combo Update 10.5.1 is released.
meh.
Question: I am a long time mac user, but this is the first time that i have ever upgraded a machine during an os launch. I need to upgrade my powerbook g4 to one of the new intel machines (for about 100 reasons lol). if i walk into store on the 26th, and buy a new laptop, what will happen? will the laptop have 10.4 and they give me a 10.5 disc? will the laptop have 10.5 on it already? or will the laptop have 10.4 and i have to buy 10.5? any help from previous buyers would really be helpful
I would assume a machine purchased on or shortly after would have 10.5 on it, but in the even it doesn't, you'll want to check out Apple's "Up To Date" site.

If you purchase a new machine after 6 pm on the 26th ( and for some time after that, as stores sell down pre-10.5 stock), you will find 10.4 installed, with a copy of 10.5 in the box.
I'm a gamer so I have no choice but to stick with Microsoft, regardless of other developments.
Mac & Linux or any Non-Windows games are a joke, please dont try to argue.
Boooooooot Camp!
Then again. Gimme gimme better graphics cards Apple.
How about growing up and stop using computers as toys?
My Mac makes me money.
And that is real world money, not world of warcraft.
Oh, and I also get laid frequently.
Kurian,
Come on dude, you know a $2,500 box with a gig of RAM, a 250 gig SATA drive, and a 7300GT is a good deal! And you can run World of Warcraft on it!
We're still in 2005, right? Oh, wait...
When Apple wakes up and puts an 8800GTX in their desktops, I might even give a casual look in their direction. Until then, their systems are a joke to the gamer / builder market. I built a box with better specs (two cores, not four, because i barely use two) for exactly half the price. And it can actually run my games.
> Mac & Linux or any Non-Windows games are a joke, please dont try to argue.
I can't help myself, so here it goes...
Chromium BSU
Try it, there's even a win32 version floating around somewhere online. Best graphics _and_ gameplay ever seen in a top-down scroller. (And don't worry about the occasional crashes in the win32 version -- the linux version has no such woes.)
zDaemon
IMHO, gameplay >> graphics. That's why DooM is still worth playing.
zDaemon offers authentic DooM gameplay, with modern internet multiplayer netcode.
(in all fairness, they have released a new/incompatible Win32 version, and not released the new Linux version yet, so Linux people are SOL on that for now. But while it was around, it was as good as any windows game.) I have not yet seen a modern game that beats the intensity of DooM.
While good Linux games are certainly a lot scarcer, they are _not_ all "a joke"!
Those of us who game on consoles would say you're missing all the truly good games.
And don't tell us not to argue. if you don't want an argument, then don't post flamebait.
"missing all the truly good games" eh?
Sure there are some great games for the console, but I'm a competetive first person shooter player, and I play WoW. I like to be able to do a 180 in the blink of an eye, not after one second like in Halo.
The MXM gfx card port is a joke.
I might as well buy a friggin laptop, instead of shaming my computer with a GeForce Go..
I ordered today an iMac 20" just before the store went down - I wonder if I get a free upgrade to Leopard? I think I'll call the store and simply ask.
just found out - if you bought any kind of Mac between Oct. 1 and Dec. 29 2007 which is not equipped with Leopard you can simply upgrade buy paying an extra 9Euros ~12$
You could just cancel your Mac order and reorder on the 26th and save your $12...
oh no... 512MB of ram minimum requirement? I'm gonna have to buy new hardware! How am I gonna run AER.. er.. um.. time machine?
Please check out kkdool's post above. The link takes you to the Leopard upgrade page for people who bought a qualifying system on or after Oct 1st of this year.

It comes out to 9.95USD total and ships on the 26th.
Almost forgot to mention... to those Microsoft loyalists above who say Windows and Office is free if you know where to look and go to the right school, that's two OSes for 9.95. ;)
My sources tell me that the "super secret feature" has yet to be revealed.
That's true. Could it be multi-touch functionality like iPhone? I know the new iMac comes w/ a Cleaning cloth. That's what it's for.
If you don't like the price or the new features don't buy it.
Your computer will still work with your existing OS.
What a bunch of cry babies.
Well, I am not complaining about the price. I can get a 5-user license for $165 (gov't employee). Even though I only have 3 Macs I can "upgrade" right now, it still works out to $55 a piece. That's still a great deal!
This *is* damn upgrade price!
All machines that Leopard runs on came with OS X preinstalled, so there's no point for having a separate [non-]upgrading verison (unless you want to piss off your customers and require having old discs around just for sake of it or charge extra those who lost them).
The system requirements mean that I won't be buying Leopard. None of my computers at home can run it. The fastest system I have is a dual-533 G4 tower. Oh well. I was able to install 10.4 even on my 500 or some such MHz G3 iMac and it works reasonably well there too. Leopard has very steep requirements. I'll push to get it for my Macbook at work, but for myself, Apple won't be getting any money from me which is a shame since I'd be happy to do so if it were possible.
i just bought a macbook in september. if i knew this i would have waited. any chance of a free upgrade for those who recently purchased mac?
@Sawyer
Sorry man you just missed the cutoff.

$129 for OSX SP4? No thanks.
@Quix: I never claimed that Vista Home Basic is the same as Leopard. I merely proved that Andrew's claim, that Vista Basic Upgrade is more expensive than Leopard, is false. And you apparently agree with that, so why that makes me fail is a mystery to me.
I realise that you're trying to drag this into a fanboy flamewar, but there's no point. I couldn't care less about Vista or Leopard. Perhaps next time you could adress those people that actually claim either one is better.

This looks like an update program if bought after the 1st of october.
Happy me
I just don't understand why there are so many people trying to compare the huge price difference between Leopard and Vista in order to justify how great Leopard's price is. I'm not a Vista, or a Mac fan boy. But I just have to wonder this. They are two operation systems that run on two completely different platforms. People buying Leopard will only put it on their Mac, right? And most of people who buy Vista will only put it on their PC's as well. So where is the competition here? By the end of day, it all comes down to who has what.
I'm not an Apple user [yet]. I am looking into replacing my desktop and laptop with a macbook pro.
Why is it that Apple does not offer upgrade pricing? That doesn't make me too thrilled about wanting dive into the Apple product community.

So do you guys do any real work or just game? It seems like every shot at OSX is that you can't play your little games. I currently use Tiger (freelance) and XP (work), seriously no comparison, OSX destroys it everytime. Boot time alone is worth the price. And the premium for the hardware, you would pay a premium for a Ferrari wouldn't you. You guys should turn off WOW every once in a while and get some sun. Try something new. Just a thought.
Please someone tell me why should I upgrade to this version? I don't know if its worth it to spend $129 on. And about the new Time Machine, is it like the system restore thing on windows xp?
When system restore becomes a complete backup of EVERYTHING, then yes. But for now, no. It creates backups of all you files and all that great stuff. So if you delete something, then a couple months later, you need it, it just goes back and retrieves it.
System restore...lol
It actually sounds more like Windows Vista's Backup and Restore Center. Vista, by the way, has System Restore on top of that, not to mention Startup Repair, Bitlocker encryption, WinRE, and the Reliability and Performance Monitor. WinRE is simply awesome for technicians! System Restore is mainly for restoring the registry and other system files to a previous restore point. I am interested to hear more about Apple's equivalent to some of the features I mentioned. That isn't sarcasm. I really am interested.
Anyone have any idea whether my coworkers and I could split a five-pack? I'm not as curious about the legality of it as much as whether it would be physically possible to do the installs. (I.e. is there some barrier in the OS that would intrinsically prevent non-family members to install the family pack or monitor them post-install?)
It would work. Just split the cost! There is no way to tell if you are actually family members. Its just multiple keys.
Have at it!
I hope it has an app like desktop manager. I just wish it wasn't so pricey.
Amazon has this for preorder - again the usual 20$ off - so for 109$....
So if I buy a Mac today, will it ship with the new OS?
No it wont. Buy a Mac after Oct 26 and you'll get a Mac with Leopard disc in the box. You'll have to install it your self but hell you'll get it with the system
@Xzavier: Too bad about the games, but ACTUALLY, in case you haven't noticed, the Mac is not MADE to be a gaming platform. It is designed to be a development platform for all those of us who use a computer as a media development tool, rather than to waste time. And this from a college student who by all the stats should be a big gaming freak
First thing I'm gonna do? Buy Leopard with a new Macbook, use bootcamp (Probably wouldn't be called that in Leopard since it is 'built-in') and install XP Pro SP2. Not Vista because Vista blows.
This is madness!
THIS IS APPPPPPLLLLLEEEEE!!!111!!!11111! lim (x->0) sin(x)/x !!!11!
YAY, at last!!!!
Can't wait, to get my hands on the shinny new OS!
I made this widget that will countdown to when it is released, you your interested then goto: http://www.needmacsupport.com/news/news.html
So far, the organizational features are the only things that appeal to me. If I purchase this upgrade, I'll need to know I can turn off the "shiny reflective" stuff with onyx.
Spaces is probably the number 2 reason I'll finally chop in for an upgrade. I understand it's no new concept and it's one I definitely miss since I switched to Mac OS X.
Almost everything else, is uninteresting as an upgrade (to me).
WTF -- one minute we had the $69 education discount and then I check today and it's $115 or whatever. I'm a mac/pc user but that's bullshit. I'm content with this Tiger build, but I'm frustrated on how they fuck around with you.
I would love to switch to a mac and see what the buzz is all about but I just can't afford the price. Apple has a great opportunity with their market share rising but the average consumer will never switch with the current pricing. They see that they can get a Windows machine for $400 compared to the thousands it costs for a mac. If anyone wants to donate a mac to me so I can switch let me know!
