NEC develops portable DNA analyzer
NEC has developed what it calls the first portable DNA analyzer -- with "portable" being classified as a briefcase half a meter wide -- that integrates all five stages in the DNA analysis process. Designed to speed up criminal investigations and aid crime prevention, the technology can fully analyze DNA within 25 minutes. Heading for full production in 2008, it should be ready in preparation for any GATTACA-style societies that have appeared by next year.

I'm not sure that I want life and death decisions made based on a 25 minutes test-in-a-case.
Oh and, you are not the father.

How can this prevent crime?
Kyle in FL @ Oct 16th 2007 2:51PM
where does it say anything about preventing crime?
Mark @ Oct 17th 2007 7:52AM
Seriously? Did you read the article? "... and aid crime prevention."
johnzilla @ Oct 16th 2007 3:11PM
It says it can ANALYZE, not MATCH. Just because it can determine a specific DNA signature in 25 minutes doesn't mean it can match it against the millions of signatures in various law enforcement DNA databases.
Even then, this thing is bound to get blasted in court:
Defense Attorney: "So, Mr. Evidence Tech, you feel my client should be sent to death row as a result of a DNA procedure performed in a suitcase in 90 degree heat on a dirty street corner 10 minutes after you ate a giant greasy burrito from Ed's Taco Hut?"

I don't understand... I thought that it tooks days/weeks to analyze DNA for criminal cases... this does it in 25 minutes?
spyboy @ Oct 16th 2007 8:17PM
But..but..but..CSI does it in mere seconds, you mean TV shows aren't real?
