2007 is definitely shaping up to be the year of the desktop OS: between
Vista's much ballyhooed and better-late-than-never launch (and subsequently pending
SP1 release), Apple's behind-schedule but super hyped release of Mac OS X
Leopard, and unlikely upstart and fan fave
Ubuntu's forthcoming Gutsy Gibbon launch. So, what's it gonna be?

Leopard and XP in Boot Camp, duh... Mac is the easiest to use, and XP in Boot Camp for stuff that is Windows-only.
I'm now moving from a PC to a Mac. At first I was going to (somehow) miss the Start Menu, but Stacks in Leopard will do the trick ;-).
The battle of the century.
Quite some years ago I reinstalled Windows 2000 Pro on a freinds PC, the problems I had finding drivers was mind numbing. I looked on different websites using a Mac (even Microsoft's) reading various infomation posted. Most site's stated that's Windows 2000 Pro did not have that much driver support when it was first launched (I heard that Windows driver support is much better now). But this is my casing point about Windows. Microsoft should provide drivers for every piece of Windows compatable hardware produced anywhere in the world so the user can install Windows on any PC , job done, no problems. Windows users may say this is impossible, But Microsoft have the funds and departments all over the world, they could do it if they wanted to but I get the impression they are lazy. Which is why I stick with Mac's, less hassle.
I voted leopard, and am using the beta.
I used windows for years, and it's a descent operating system. However I switched to OSX ever since I tried some of the longhorn beta's and judging from what I've seen there I already knew that Microsoft next OS wasn't going to be as good as I had hoped. Even today this is still true, just look at the poll. There aren't many users that want to stick with Tiger, but if you look at XP on the other hand. The majority would rather stick with an old operating system rather then move forward. People that are interested in the next operating system are rightfully more interested in leopard then in Vista. Vista just has too many problems to really enjoy using it. For a poll about next generation operating systems I really don't think this has anything to do with fanboys, but rather with how much Vista screwed up.
So as of now, with how Vista is a resource hog? I'll pass. Windows XP will be just fine for me for many years to come. I've seen DirectX 10 and in my personal opinion, it's not a big enough of a difference to switch. Graphics still look great on XP (with a good video card...such as my GeForce 7600) and will for a long time. So once M$ gets Vista to not be such a hog, or when you can't run stuff on XP anymore, I'll switch. I'm sure that'll be awhile though.
Don't get me wrong, I love Macs. Mac OS X runs great and fast, has perfect features for most users.
I am just seriously interested on how people can even be allowed to vote for Leopard. It's not even out yet, is there an open beta I sadly missed, or is engadget just being screwy here by adding that option?
All the latest beta client and server versions had been uploaded to newsservers and BitTorrent networks. You must have unfortunately missed them.
Anyway it's a given that Leopard is great since it's an Apple product. I've installed Vista Ultimate (since removed) and it's okay, but it's clearly not in Leopard's class when it comes to ease of use. A newbie could be comfortable with Leopard in about an hour or two. I'm sticking with XP Pro and am happy with using it for my Windows OS.
We don't need no stinking Vista. For PC users, it's BACK to the FUTURE:

Mr. PC salesman, what's the latest and greatest Windows OS? Well, Mr. PC user, you have a choice. You can either buy the latest (Vista) or the greatest (XP). Awright! I'll take XP. I can run it when I get my new Mac, right. Yes, sir.... every major OS runs on an Intel Mac.
Screw Leopard, I'm sticking with Tiger
WIth a cutoff at 867mhz, my g4 800mhz just won't make it. WHY is that extra 67mhz so important?!?!
Screw it, all operating systems and their overlords are evil
I may not use OSX, but I voted for it because it's a great easy to use and stable OS. The reason I use Windows is only because it's the most popular, and it has the widest software range, but that doesn't mean the slightest that it's the best OS.
Ubuntu & Tiger for me.
XP blows Vista away.
LINUX is free. and it's fast. infinitely configurable. and super-stable. and once you set it up, a process that took me 3 months(!!!) it stays set-up!! Ubuntu and its cousins do not get "service packs"... They get updates weekly or even more frequently. It's probably the fastest evolving OS out there, and that is the probverbial card up its sleeve.
Nothing, however, comes close to the killer hardware/software combo that Apple presents us with. Currently nothing is sexier, sleeker, simpler and swifter than OS X. which is not surprising, because, well, it's really UNIX, you see....
the most exciting thing in OS development is that sexy AmigaOS with a SEVEN SECONDS boot-time and superb multitasking(!!!)
WOW, so many people are writing comments about hardware vs software.
First Josh wrote this :
Who cares about the increased stability of vista when it sucks up resources like a vacuum. If i pay for expensive hardware, i don't want a freaking OS getting in the way of using the hardware to its full extent. Of course, I am also planning on switching to it for DX10 gaming (it will be booted for that ONLY - as photoshop/bridge are my true home as a photographer and they need resources)
It wouldn't even be that bad if microsoft hadn't been so ignorant to the RAM wall that hardware intensive people are running into. Sure, 64 bit addresses this, but wait! The drivers are just not there and neither are the apps?! Oh crap - i suppose they should have just created a single 64 bit OS.
but they didn't and here i am complaining about it.
.
Ok man, you know that hard disk quality is what makes any OS boot at a determined time.
Also, PLEASE compare 2 computers with same spec and you will see that the difference is of a 1 to 5 seconds.
Also note that the booting time is also determined by the number of things to open in the boot time ( applications)
You should also note that mac os x has way much less driver to do for his os than windows. They only need to do drivers for the computer they sell, not for any computers.
Also note that mac are pricy for the hardware that comes with it.
An hp notebook at 700 has the same hadware as a macbook !
Im not saying that Windows is better, i dont think so.
But each os has its good and its bad !
If you do games then windows is for you, if you do photoshop and things like that, maac os x, if you know computers and are geek then linux is yor os.
I dont agree with people saying that mac are better because you dont change them each 3 year.
Again, macs and other comps have nearly the same hardware(intel macs) so if you need to change your comp because its too slow, then both need to be changed . And for those talkin about powerpc macs, even tho they dont have the same proc arch, they have the same problem as all comps, they do get old!
Most people are using mac for 2 reason : No virus and no trouble.
I dont agree, macs have troubles, a good example is the recent release of Leopard with plenty of bugs. I do agree tho that windows xp/vista have the same probs(wait for sp1(vista)).Dont forget that both compagny want to make cash ! For the virus, compare 5% of the globe to 90% and tell me that its not going to have more viruses.
Personnaly, i would go for windows vista/linux/mac os x
i use all three on my comps and im happy !
As a finish, i would ask people that write comments to be informed before posting. AND, nobody wins, it just depend on your level of understanding of a comp and what you do so im not mac, not windows, not linux no comments on that PLEASE !
I think something ABove Leopard would be where functionality gets real cool.
I imagine OS10.6 would be called 'Lynx' and it would have some stuff that goes beyong Time Machine & Spaces and has extra networking and supageous extrafunctions.
To be honest Tiger came with my MacBook and I would JUSt like a Panther with the triple-chat function
Why do they even bother....Windows Vista will take the top spot again, just because of one word..."compatibility"....even on Apple systems.
Even though Leopard has so called "features" that makes your experience more exciting, how many of them do you actually need. Windows Vista is just a streamlined clean system that has one thing in mind, productivity....and btw, I wouldn't downgrade to XP ever, because Vista runs faster that it on my system, XP is bullshit.
If you can't afford a gig ram, then you can throw out your PC. Vista has been designed to make use of next gen technology such as DDR3 and DX10 so when they become more affordable we will see that Vista will be as commonplace as XP, and Leopard will be as last season as the PS3 and X-box 360
Comparing Vista with Leopard is like comparing the Wii with the PS3...yes the Wii(Leopard) has great features like those funky controls but the PS3(Vista) is way more powerfull, and will prove itself in the long run...As for Ubuntu, and whatever other OS's are out there, throwing features at something won't increase sales....make it more compatible, and innovate the Windows interface and you will have a winner.

XP blows Vista away????
Let me see, Vista is way more secure than XP...for instance when I leave XP online for an hour, my PC will boot slower and slower over time.
I remember when XP was just released, people went saying XP is bullshit! (XP means Xtra Problems) and they would stick to 98 or 2000....and now? XP is the most used OS in the world even with it's minimun ram requirement of 64MB
Vista has way better memory management systems than XP, and it runs way cooler too. I have a P4 3.2GHz, 1Gb DDR2-533 RAM, with a Geforce 7100GS 512MB GPU running Vista Ultimate...User Xperience index of 3.0 points...thus my sytem can make use of Aero and play Stalker and any other game on 1280x1024 screen resolution without any glitch...One piece of advice, if your system is less than 3.0...stick to XP or Vista Basic or Vista Starter
Vista is the next big thing, the best OS in the world, as we all will se by the time SP2 are released, and thus we all should just stop with this pointless fighting over which one will win. If Apple made their OS run on normal peoples PC's we might just buy it, but due to the fact that Apple forces people to buy their shitty systems to make use of their "Most Advanced OS in the world (bullshit)" makes them the "Most idiotic bunch in the world"
