EDGE Tech intros $400 32GB DiskGO USB flash drive
32GB USB drives are certainly not new, but considering the astronomical pricetags they tend to sport, they haven't exactly caught fire with budget-conscious gadget lovers. EDGE Tech is apparently hoping to change that by offering up its capacious 32GB DiskGO for "just" $399.95. Granted, it's not like our bargain alerts are going haywire over that figure, but we suppose it's not too unreasonable considering the alternatives. Ah well, at least you won't have to worry over this thing attracting the ever-wandering eyes of gadget thieves -- you know, considering how the unadorned exterior hides its true value and all.

ReadyBoost on Vista would have a field day with this thing.
aoeu00 @ Oct 18th 2007 11:18AM
Seriously, for USB drives.. the most that most people would pay regardless of capacity is around $50-75... "maybe" $100.
engadget.mlc @ Oct 18th 2007 11:28AM
Since Readyboost can use only 4GB of the flash drive, you'll need to find another use for it.
If it's fast enough, I might think about putting my work source code on it (16-20GB when built). Built times on a 3-drive RAID-0 are awesome, but the usual RAID-0 issues apply.

@engadget.mlc
16-20 GB? Of "your" "source code"? 3-drive RAID 0?
I'm thinkin' that post was a combination of ESL and ADD.

I wonder what the read/write speeds are.
David @ Oct 18th 2007 11:19AM
The 32GB Flash Drive has a transfer rate of up to 480Mb/s.
johnzilla @ Oct 18th 2007 12:01PM
@David: 480Mb/s is just the max USB 2.0 transfer rate. USB 2.0 transfer rate != memory read/write speed. Just because the bus can transfer at 480Mb/s doesn't mean the chips can keep up with it.
Lots of sites benchmark USB flash drives. Benchmarks would be pointless if all memory automatically kept up with USB transfer rates.

I see what you are doing there. With that...32GB suppository!
suv4x4 @ Oct 18th 2007 10:46AM
What I notice is, with this and the 64GB drives, they are as tiny as a 256MB drive. I've heard over and over that if you need to stack enough chips to get 200GB drive it'll be as big as a HDD. Well, technology evolves faster than predictions.
Almadi @ Oct 18th 2007 11:15AM
How is the speed?
I got an 8 GB drive from LG for $90. It takes around 2.5 hours to write it full.

I really don't know what to think of this. I know that bigger is better when it comes to storage space, but being a high school student... I just simply don't need that much space on a USB drive. There are obviously some people that can put it to good use, but in my opinion the average person doesn't need that much space. Plus I loose them like crazy. The 1GB or 2GB drives are good enough for what I do, most of what I use these drives for is transporting of data anyway.

Here's some advice for a high school student. Regardless of the size of your flash storage, don't pimp your site.
udamdirtyape @ Oct 18th 2007 11:31AM
I bought the 8 gb model a few months back... the storage is nice, but the damn thing feels so cheap, the silver paint flecks off and it is hard to fit into some usb slots, especially when the slot next to it is used....

So $400 (£195) is a bargain?! I just got a 32gb flash drive for £41 ($84) with 12mbps speeds - that's a bargain!!

Paul,
Don't worry, this flash drives are ALWAYS increasing in size and DECREASING in price. So basically, you'll never get the best deal cuz by the next week/month the price will be dropping.
