Something seems like it was probably lost in translation here. A lot of articles I see written about Japan in this country seem to assume they're all a bunch of weirdo dummies, when most of the time the stuff being written about was intended as a joke - sometimes on the writer of the article.
I actually doubt any of this stuff is intended to fool anyone. I think it's more likely some form of performance art, or just a way of these people getting themselves written up in the western media.
