Sure, Apple's profitability and viability is based on any number of factors, but there's one figure that analysts have been training their calculators on for months that has finally seen the light of day: Apple sold 1,119,000 iPhones in Q4 2007, which ended on September 29th, bringing the grand total to 1,389,000
since launch. That might meet or miss your expectations, but other sales bringing a smile to Jobs' face and a cha-ching to his wallet include a 34% growth in Mac sales year to year and a 17% growth in iPods year to year -- with 10.2 million iPods sold last quarter. The earnings call hasn't started just yet, so hopefully we'll get a few more juicy details on how much AT&T is chipping in to the bottom line these days.

Man, Apple is just an unstoppable beast. That's insane. Love them or hate them, they run an insanely profitable company.
phrozunsun @ Oct 23rd 2007 8:47PM
1,119,000? That's amazing, such an even number. You would have thought it would be 1,119,008.
Nubaeus @ Oct 22nd 2007 4:55PM
YEAH SHIPPING!
Sales =...600,000?
Matt @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:10PM
Incorrect, these are reported sale numbers.
If you really wanted to try to bash Apple, this is a stretch, wait for AT&T to release number of activations and that would show you sales v. activation. Though really, I highly doubt it will be much of a difference between the two.
PEZ @ Oct 22nd 2007 6:11PM
Matt, this has to do with Apples profits, not whether or not ATT activated the iphone. ITs never about anyone else except apple - yeah, you knoew that punk - well, didnt ya?
spyyder @ Oct 22nd 2007 7:26PM
The Apple bashing tards right on queue. Do you guys sit by your computers waiting for these articles?? Is there some kind of Apple Bashing Rewards Program (TM) out there that I am not aware of.
JackOLantern @ Oct 23rd 2007 12:33AM
actually a fiscal year can be different for each and every company - I could say that my companies fiscal year starts July 17 2007 and that I am currently in FY08 and there is 14 periods rather that 12 months - its all up to the company as to how they want to set up their fiscal calendar.
Quix @ Oct 23rd 2007 12:33AM

I think the Winbots get Zune Points from Redmond per ounce of anti-Apple FUD posted publicly.
seoultrain @ Oct 22nd 2007 4:56PM
I think you guys mean Q3? it's Q4 right now.
Shane Lloyd @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:00PM
Financial calendars do not run the same as the real one. Quarter 4 just ended, typically it's from July 1st to September 30th. I know, confusing.
Kyrra @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:01PM
No, they are correct with what they said. But it would have been useful if they said "Fiscal year" as Apples Fiscal year ends on Sept 30.

JeffM @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:20PM
Yea... shouldn't that read Q4 FY07?
rzlmlchm009 @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:23PM
They were referring only to Q4 and not the entire fiscal year.
seoultrain @ Oct 22nd 2007 6:52PM
my mistake. I know a lot of the electronics industry refers to Q4 as the holiday season. just assumed apple would be the same.
IndiaTech @ Oct 22nd 2007 10:11PM
A fiscal year is different in different countries... In some countries it runs from Jan to Jan. In commonwealth countries (UK, India, etc.) it runs April to April. In the US it runs from Oct to Oct.
From auto industry to USCIS, everyone uses a fiscal year. For EG: a car model released after Oct is known as the next year model. A civic launched in Oct 2007 will be called 2008 civic....
Same goes for visas and GCs issued by USCIS.

I hate all of these different calendars. At my work we finished Q2 Sept 30. At least it means we get our "first half" bonus in october. Just in time for x-mas gadget shopping!
RC @ Oct 22nd 2007 4:58PM
Do they work with Vista 64Bit yet?
paloooz @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:02PM
Who uses that?
jroc @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:11PM
Probably not but they do have government spying software in them for all of the sheeple that flock to them http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/july2007/200707iphonesurveillance.htm
JeffM @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:22PM
Whoops... was I not supposed to install that? :P
I'm not kidding. :( (about using it or my compatibility issues)
Constable Odo @ Oct 22nd 2007 6:25PM
You don't mean does the iPhone work with Vista. You mean does Vista work with the iPhone. Microsoft is retracting Vista and adding another Service Pack for WinXP.
You iPhone haters keep saying that the iPhone is an overhyped piece of crap, so the United States is going to have a hell of a lot people walking around holding fertilizer in their hands.
Last time I checked, Apple was $187.35 after hours. Microsoft was $30.51 and Dell was $28.65.
TinyTeddies @ Oct 22nd 2007 8:03PM
Last time I checked, MS had a total world OS market share of around 92%
Bakk @ Oct 22nd 2007 8:15PM
@TinyTeddies;
E-mail me in 10 years when that number is less then 60%
BoredOne @ Oct 22nd 2007 8:56PM
@Constable Odo
So Apple was worth $187.35. So will that stock split once Mr. Jobs gets his under the table back dated options. I kid.
Constable Odo @ Oct 23rd 2007 1:31AM

Check tomorrow and it will be around 91% and dropping fast. Thank Vista for that.
Dave @ Oct 22nd 2007 4:57PM
The stock is rocking in after-hours trading....
Nate @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:17PM
thats what usually happens when you blow out the numbers...
Ireland @ Oct 22nd 2007 8:57PM
It's up $12, or about 7%. Wowzer!!!
RandomRover @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:05PM
It took them 3 months to get to 1.4 million. If they maintain those numbers through the end of 2008, they would be at 8.4 million - which is far less than the 10 million that Jobs had hoped for. Of course, theres a ton of other factors like momentum, hype, worldwide sales, and other/new models that affect the sales, so only time will tell.
Kevin Glattfelder @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:08PM
Don't forget European sales which haven't begun yet.
rawhead @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:15PM
There also is this little thing called the "holiday season" when Apple (and pretty much any other maker) will make, oh I dunno, like 200% more in sales of everything they sell.
daniel @ Oct 23rd 2007 11:03AM
Gotta love the Christmas season ;)
ScOObyDoo @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:05PM
Just to put things in perspective here. Nokia sells ONE MILLION phones every single day.
Apple is doing great, but has a long way to go.
Rob @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:08PM
Agreed - but they don't get $400 for each one or a share of the contract
John M @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:08PM
Nokia also sells worldwide. The iPhone is just now going global....Nice try though
Matt @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:09PM
Nokia also has about 20+ different lines of phones, that range from free to $500.
While that is great for Nokia, they have also been doing this for many, many years, and Apple just jumped into the river a bit ago and already able to keep up (a bit).
I.E @ Oct 22nd 2007 8:57PM
Matt, actually nokia handsets go up to $1000+
jmattick @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:22PM
I just bought a iPod Touch 16gb (which I wouldn't have purchased, but jailbreak made it all worth it), and I'm loving it. But I'm also not going to rush out and purchase a Mac as a result of all this.
And I might add that I own a Zune 30gb which I still use, in addition to the iPod Touch. :)
MARSHAK @ Oct 23rd 2007 11:25PM
not to be critical on either product, may I ask why you use and/or carry around 2 digital media players?
jmattick @ Oct 23rd 2007 11:29PM
Zune holds a majority of my music and stays (for the most part) in my car.
iPod Touch was purchased mainly as a gadget because of Safari and the third pary applications. But I use it at the gym because it is smaller than the Zune, and I don't need all the music my Zune has on it.

Now thats a big number...
Nate @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:18PM
analysts were expecting 983k
Ireland @ Oct 22nd 2007 8:52PM
Nate, you'll find they made more than 983 thousand this quarter, I think you meant to say "983 Million", as in just shy of 1 Billion profit.
Nate @ Oct 22nd 2007 10:01PM
No analysts were expecting 983k iPhones sold is what I was saying.
Snitch @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:18PM
as soon as people start to realise that most of these supose to be iPhone killers are just lame regular touch screen phones and not multi touch, theres no stoping it
Jake @ Oct 22nd 2007 5:20PM
Nokia wishes it had Apples gross margins on those million phones it sales a day, you would see the first trillon dollar company.
