You all laugh at us for religiously trawling the FCC site during our rare free moments, and yet every once in awhile those countless hours of tedium pay off big time: meet Dell's unannounced all-in-one XPS One. What we're seeing here is a likely 22-inch WSXGA (1,680 x 1,050) display flanked by stereo speakers (with media buttons running up one side), topped off by a webcam, and featuring a slot-loading Blu-ray burner along the right bezel. On the inside we've got a number of processor options from Intel (the FCC test unit had a 2.66GHz E6750 Core 2 Duo), integrated or ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 graphics, up to 4GB of RAM, four-flavor WiFi plus Bluetooth, and the usual slew of connectors including S/PDIF and a proprietary port for an optional breakout TV dongle. Input comes via the included wireless mouse and keyboard, and Dell's also loaded up a memory card reader, making for quite the capable multimedia PC. We'd expect this desktop to be priced well above the
recent Gateway model with which it shares a moniker -- which isn't such a big deal, really, as $2,000+ price tags have never really stopped XPS customers before. For all the angles, make sure to hit up the gallery below...
DON'T GET THIS COMPUTER.....OR ANY DELL COMPUTER!!!! my wife bought this computer (xps one) and it crashed within the first 2 months!! we called customer support, and they sent us new parts. they also had us scheduled with a technician..........BUT THE TECHNICIAN NEVER CAME!!! we finally called the guy who was suppose to come, and he said he wasn't even qualified to fix it! now.......how dumb is that!!!! then after that we called again, and again, and again. The last 2 times we called, the tech support told us that a technician would call within 2 hours to set up an appointment. they even guaranteed us that someone would call!! we waited, and waited.......patiently........4 hours pass by, and no call from a tech. well, now my wife has college homework built up, including 3 late assignments! It's been a long 3 weeks without a working computer. sorry dell.........but we're sticking to sony from now on. or, at least some other brand who will stand behind their $2,000 computers.
Hello everyone am here looking to buy xps game and ps2 or ps3 am ready to buy it now for my soon in west africa for his birthday gift please if is avlaible for now kindlly contact me on my private email...(talk2cynthia299@yahoo.com)
Hope to hear from you asap and stay cool
Cynthia
I'll get things started... Apple iMac blah, blah, blah...
ooo i want to join!!! imac blah blah imac gateway one blah blah bleh bleh blah!!!!
apple blah blah has competition? blah blah blah?
ok, I'll add (but make it readable)
I don't like Macs, but mainly because of the price
(is now that they support Windows XP, is there anything else "wrong" with them?)
but compared against the Gateway One, I saw iMac as the winner
pricewise (yeah actually, it's about the same and it beat in the performance tests I've seen)
and not to mention, Mac OS will beat Windows for a number of a market All-in-One buyers want
but as a non-Apple kind of guy, lets hope Dell does a better job
Complete and utter non-creativity on the part of Dell. You can't beat 'em, so you 'copy them?' what the heck is this?
I would expect that someone at Round Rock would have sat down with Mike and come up with something better creatively than copy the company that you stated should 'close up shop and give the shareholders back their money.'
Amazing how the mighty have fallen!
I love the iMac's I'm actually planning on getting one for my next comp, my first mac, but does it really matter if they copy another companies design 'cause i works?
If it really bothered you that much then you should only buy Apple computers, since all pc's are just rip offs of the Apple II.
Yeah, iMacs don't have this, iMacs do not have that, and so on...(no, seriously XD)
You can't beat 'em, so you 'copy them?' what the heck is this?
um...
where have you been Rick? have you not seen all the iPod and iPhone (and non-Apple) product clones?
its not a wholly fugly or ugly machine, ive kinda been a fan of the way Dell designs their XPS laptops (and especially in comparison to that Gateway thing). and i would imagine its a fairly good machine, those XPSes aren't half bad in the hardware department. i'd personally love a 2.66 GHz Core 2 duo, 4 GB of ram, and some extra graphics oomph for my already-aging iMac (a 20" 2 GHz Core Duo i got last July). i think i'll stick with it for now though.
oh and the mouse is made by Logitech. i've got one with a different color scheme. works pretty well with my PlayStation 3
Go ahead Dell. Run your photocopiers at top speed. Copy. Copy. Copy. They're looking to buy the world's first 3D photocopier. Why don't they just buy iMacs and stick a Dell logo on it. That would save a lot of photocopy paper waste.
Seriously. It has some nice features that iMacs don't have and never will. For any Mac I'll ever buy I'll have to purchase a card reader because Apple thinks they're not important enough to build in. Forget Blu-Ray burning. Apple doesn't think anyone wants to pay for it.
Odo you know how many computers Dell sell v Apple? I think Dell is doing ok without the "copy copy copy".
Why are all these OEM's going after this formfactor?? The saving grace of a PC is the ability to upgrade the hardware.
I agree. Without being able to upgrade it over time, I'm not interested.
Yeah but I'm sure MOST people never open up their pc's, and just stick with what they get until they buy a new comp.
Go look at yesterday's Apple shareholder conference call.
That's why. They see a market there, and they want a share of it.
maybe because lots of people ask for such a form factor?
Most people don't visit Engadget, reddit, digg, and arstechnica every day. Most people haven't dusted their 3 year old PC's even once. We are not the norm, far from it. If they catered to us, I doubt they'd have a successful business model.
Because for the most part, you have to do your upgrading all at one time. If you built a PC two years ago, just about the only thing useful when upgrading for X game (i.e. Crysis) will have been the HDD. Everything else (RAM, video card, mobo, CPU) will need to be replaced.
And since 99/100 people don't bother upgrading anyway, but just replace, you might as make a slim PC that doesn't have a million cords sticking out of it. Only downside is that if something breaks, it tends to be more expensive.
I should've posted a theory in my original comment to explain what I was thinking -- The reason Mac's are doing relatively well isn't because the hardware resembles a toaster, but rather because of software. So chasing after this form factor is a potential red herring.
??...... shit
can you mount her on the wall?
I sure can.
i think i just melted butter D:
Well this looks familiar.
Oops, I mean, blah blah blah.
Well, at least windows user are finally getting some options for those who don't want giant ugly boxes and dozens of cables.
Windows users did have option... oh it almost slipped... blah blah blah
woah, i want one now!
the gateway one looks like crap compared to this, although I don't really like the big xps logo.
when will you even see the logo when your using the computer...?
I like it, the laptop controls on the keyboard are cool haha.
Haha, it's a mirror.
Is this just me or is this thing ugly!!!
It is you..
No, it's ugly.
I'll quote my favorite Vice Magazine 'Don't':
"Do they hate eyes?!"
No, it's ugly.
I'll quote my favorite Vice Magazine 'Don't':
"Do they hate eyes?!"
This is one of the few computers I've seen in recent years that just made me go, "Whoa!" when I saw it. Gorgeous machine!
BTW why is it an XPS but only offers a Mobility 2400? At least a 2600 should've been put in there if they want any sort of gaming to happen.
I though 2600 wasn't good for gaming, weren't there a bunch of people bitching about it in the iMac's? Or where those just MS fanboys?
I don't know much good gaming graphics cards...
That was my thought exactly, my 2 year old 7800GT can stomp all over a HD2400 and beat out a 2600 on most games, but really, what is a modern gaming machine without a crown jewel of a 8800GTS/X or 2800pro/xt? Especially one of this size, that case ain't small...
when you compare an nvidia card to a ati card you've got to look at the 2 digiy(0x00 or x00) It's perfectly normal that you're 7800 mops the floor with a hd2600 since they're not in the same class...
Agreed, I loved my Atari 2600 and want one built into this. Pitfall forever!
Good luck dell, niche markets are hard to squeeze into these days.
agreed, and get rid of the blu-ray!
Graphic cards for computers are WAY overcomplicated and scare alot of amateur gamers away before they can understand the numbers and models. But basically the "higher the number the better the card" Hypothetically speaking. The new thing for Nvidia is their 8800's and ATI's 2800's. I think. Like I said graphics cards are way overcomplicated when you realize the simplicity behind them.
At least it doesn't have the big chin the Imac has... does anyone know how deep it is?
Snazzy =)
So what going to happen to that iMac ad comparing it to the XPS...or will the iMac just make another rivaling ad with this new XPS One? >_>
I like that more PC companies are "experimenting" with all-in-one designs, as they have done so in the past, but they still need a lot of work.
I find that the XPS 1 looks way too glossy. And as usual, looks way too industrial than it should.
I kind of like chins though, they provide a place for Post-It Notes. :)
I like the idea of all-in-one PC's, but they still have a long way to go. I like the iMac, but seeing that I would never bother with OS X, I'm waiting for a good one on the PC side.
The only one that looks good is the HP TouchSmart. If you call that a all-in-one PC.
Yeah, I don't like the back or the stand. I have an iMac, and I really do like the form factor. The lack of an upgrade path sucks, but that's the price of the all-in-one. The color is nice, just the angular look is stupid. I guess they had to make it look like ass to differentiate it from other all-in-ones.
Agreed, the stand sucks. No height adjustment, no swivel. Hardly a good start for a media screen doing double-duty as PC and entertainment centre.
well.. my first impressions were WOW which is odd considering i think dell's computers in general are pretty ugly, but whats with the keyboard? unless my eyes deceive me (they like to do that), they felt the need to cram a function key on there? why? and why the cramped 10 key? this thing isn't a laptop. Maybe it goes along with the trend of their systems not knowing what they are meant to be used for like the M2010
removable remote stuck in the keyboard.
If it had a good gaming card I'd get one to go along with my iMac.
So..these all in one PC's...are they going to try to destroy each other so they can become you know, the real One?
haha, "I WILL become...THE ONE!"
ah, jet li you crazy character.
i would buy it if it didnt have a horrible ATI Radeon graphics card....now if nvidia were there....thats a different story...
Nvidia wouldn't make a spot of different, its an HD2400, which is the one of the lowest end parts ATi make for the HD2xx0 series. if they put in a comparable Nvidia 8400GS it would suck equally. The problem is the underpowered graphics card in general, a low end part like that really gimps the whole thing. That said, their choice of ATi over Nvidia on the low end is probably due to the excellent hardware video decoding provided by the UVD chips on the HD2400s and HD2600s, which makes blu-ray that much easier.
lol, thee was a PC with this long before the One. ... it just happened to also be a Mac.
And it costs the same as a full scale desktop from Dell, weird, huh? ;)
I don't get this machine... It has the upgrade path of a laptop, less portability, about the same price (though keep in mind you can't get a 22" laptop... yet), the video card of a laptop (worse than most 13.3" and 14.1" laptops with dedicated video cards), and the keyboard of a laptop. Where's the advantage?
As Aldous pointed out, it has a function key. Fair enough, maybe you can adjust brightness, etc. from the keyboard. It also has no numpad, but it has a touchpad? Why? If you have a bluetooth mouse, do you really need a touchpad in the keyboard? I know many people who really, really like having numpads, and this whole setup seems kinda silly.
I agree this machine has No advantage over my Macbook Pro and I can smoke it's preformance specs anyway... and as for Blueray burner.. Who needs it, anyone remember thos mini-discs from Sony... Yeah none of you can play them now but you can all play CDs. Will be the same fate for Blueray, HD-DVD is the future, get used to the idea.
Ya... But its still a dell
Can't wait to put 7.10 on that
Hey Apple look no chin! See it can be done, oh wait was that supposed to be blah blah blah?
Sure no chin but it got sideburns...
Yeah, but those sideburns are actually speakers. No need for any other speakers sitting on your desk.
How the hell can you find anything on the FCC site?
It's beautiful, but I wish it was affordable... I'm building my own computer that will be 3.0GHz, but it will also be around $800, but not nearly as pretty.
I'd buy an XPS if I could get one as good as the one I'm *hoping* to build for around the same price. I'd be willing to pay an extra $150 for that beautiful case and extra features.
From looking at the back of the unit with the back cover off, it appears theres noly two slots for RAM, placed on an angle.
I think this means it does not support dual-channel.
This would make a great HTPC, probably why it has the HD2400 video card -- not much on gaming, but not bad at all for movies/HDTV. A real home theater setup would need a larger display, but maybe this is just a step on the way to bigger things. I definitely think all-in-one form factor is the way to go.
With good enough hardware -- which this system appears to have -- and the right software, I'll take a HTPC over Tivo or anything else. I keep waiting for some PC manufacturer to finally put together a really nice HTPC system with intuitive, easy-to-use software, controllable with a remote, maybe Dell will the one.
At least it doesn't look as big of a rip off as the Gateway One. :P
I love it when I get into arguments about the logic behind putting laptop parts in desktops/all-in-ones/etc. with enthusiasts (which includes myself, but at least I'm open-minded enough to understand why people buy them). Nobody fucking upgrades except us, if someone wants their PC or laptop to be upgraded, they'll bring it to a "qualified" Geek Squad/etc. technician so they do it for them because they fear "splowdin their machinez!", the fact is, nobody cares about the origin of the innards of their computers, if it's fast and it's priced accordingly for what it is, they'll buy it. There is no Apple tax when you buy an iMac (try putting a computer together with the same innards as the iMac but for less, at best you'll equalize its price tag, but the Merom XE that came in mine and the LCD panel alone make up for over 50% of the price I got it for), you're just spending more because they're made with mobile parts (reason: heat and size). Of course you can build a great computer equipped with a great graphics card and an off-the-shelve LCD screen for about a grand, but try getting one for that price from Dell. :V
Just out of curiosity, why do some of you guys say you would never bother with OS X? I think it works awesome after years of being used to the clunkiness of Windows. And if I need Windows, I just boot the XP partition.
Yeah, us Mac users always wonder this. People get scared of what they aren't used to and the word "hate" is used too much on this forum. Just let it go though.
Dear Dell,
Throw cablecard in that thing, and not giant external cablecard boxes. 2 nice integrated cablecard tuners. Then you got something special.
The pictures probably don't do it justice. But this thing looks like it was put together by the rap dudes who sing about loving flat buns.
If they want to sell it for over 2000, they should market that machine under Alienware.
I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.
Hummmm... blah blah burp..... dink honk waaaaaaaa!!!!
anyways, this looks like a really nice PC, 22" is a sweet spot size wise, shame its not 1920x1200, but they will probably add that later. I think Dell is moving its business model around a little, especially with losing market share the past few years. They need to get these into shops so people can see them in person.
Why do apple fan boys say "copy copy", or "finally PC people can buy an all in one"?
Sony have been putting out really sweet all in ones for years!!! with really innovative features, I loved the flip up keyboard screensaver thing they did, and have had it in almost all of their PC's of this class.
Oh, and I have been a PC user since the 486 dx2 days, but am now running a 20" imac, I think that apple is a more evil company than Microsoft, I wish i could install OSX on a hardware platform of my choice, but no, Apple limit us to only their hardware!
What's with all that ugly bronze? Or is that (hopefully) the lighting?
This thing is ugly. Wait. I mean Ugly.
Who cares if it's an all in one? If someone REALLY wanted an all in one PC, they should go for the Gateway. At least it looks better.
This thing reminds me of 1995, but without a huge tower. Ugly.
The same as an iMac? Last I checked you can't get such easy access to the guts. The Dell looks as though it's possible to upgrade at least once the cpu, gpu, drives. It's good looking to my eyes compared to the 1990 wintel style new iMac. And I bet the Dell screen will not have condensation.
If you want a toy go and buy an ugly screen freezing iMac. OSX looks as though it's built for Michael Jackson's sleep overs and Pee Wee Herman's cinema adventures. The iPhone looks like something out of CSI Infinite Loop, all those grease stains, other stains and DNA.
Yeah like you would know about iMacs... It is obvious you don't own a Mac. For all you Mac bashers... your fear is what you don't know but if you want to know, shut up and put up. Go plunk down a few grand and get you a MacPro with dual quad processors and 16 Gb of ram like my machine. Then when you are streaming along in WOW at over 550 fps without a glitch then get back to me on how these little hacked together POS wintel machines operate. Don't bash the Mac till you try the Mac.... YOUR IGNORANCE keeps others from learning.
just because you can't afford a macbook pro doesn't mean you have to try and bash on apple, chill dude , you have your window panes or whatever they are called and i'll stick to my sweet, juicy, shiny apple.
No chin. Ok i'll give you that but it 'LOOKS' like it has a big a$$ forhead and big Elvis chops! I didn't know Mike Dell was a hesher!
Huh, aren't all the PC companies a few years behind(i.e...iMac)
I'm writing this from an iMac. Where's the similarity? If you say they've copied the form factor, then every LCD maker has copied another brand. I like the look of this. I won't be going back from Mac though, I just prefer it.
Man, that's ugly!
It looks like Dell took DEEsign lessons from the homeboys who ugly-up BMWs with spoilers, rubberband tires and such. It needs those spinner wheels and red neon undeneath to really punch it up a few notches. Where can I get an XPS tattoo?
The addition of card readers is silly. Which format do you use in the machine out of, what, 25? For $10 or $20 get a USB 2 card reader and plug it in when you need it. I use FireWire and ExpressCard 34 card readers with my MacBook Pro.
As more and more people opt for laptops over desktops, they realize that the "need" to upgrade is moot. You sort of accept the fact that your video card isn't the best or fastest and move on.
The ability to upgrade seems comforting, but how many "average" users (not people who lurk sites like this) actually upgrade anything? EVER. Once you max out the RAM and maybe add a bigger/faster hard drive, what's left? Those things you do once. You're done, just use the thing and get on with whatever it is you do.
looks ugly
Oh come on you fools, this is only a basic spec version used for regulatory testing. The finsihed one will of course offer a much more powerful graphics card/cpu as an option! Wake Up!
wow... so many apple fanboys out here. There have been pc's like this for years! go overseas and this is almost a common thing. I know here in the U.S. Sony had a model like this for sale for about a year now. What's with all this copying BS. Apple is very beautiful in form, but totally lacks in function. Such an ignorant company. eg. mac mice; all form, no function. People always end up replacing it with a two button mouse made from companies like logitech. Some of their desktop monitors are very unintuitive too. Worthless touch buttons with no adjustment options. All in all, lets not make this another PC vs mac thread. This Dell is gorgeous in its own right and to say it's a ripoff of Mac is just plain stupid. Is having an all in one PC that hard to conceive? It was bound to happen as everybody is becoming more compact and feature filled. Dell will just make it more popular and affordable.
I would like to point out that the Apple Mighty Mouse has 4 buttons and a scroll ball. Its way more functional and useful then my old logitech.
lol @ crying apple fanboys. sorry guys, apple didn't invent the all in one computer. they didn't invent the mp3 player. hell, they didn't invent anything. they are all about marketing and style with no substance. steve hampton cry me a river. typical apple fanboy.
Name one all in one PC before the Macintosh.
That's right. You can't. Because Apple did create the all in one PC.
Nobody ever claimed Apple made the mp3, but they did make the AAC format which is featured in iTunes.
People - get real. If you have the extra cash get a Macintosh and indulge in what you like. If you don't have the cash, or don't like what they offer, then don't get a Mac. Get something like this new Dell. What is wrong with people. If you like a Mercedes and can afford it - buy it! If you can't afford it get a stink'n Honda or something. Please people - stop this crazy raciest stuff with Mac.
Personally, I still use an older Macintosh and I find it interesting that older Mac stuff still works well and seems to have longevity to a PC.
i misread your statement. Apple didn't create the mp3 player, but they did something most mp3 players fail to do. Offer a decent software solution and content distribution center along with it's device. Usually companies will get one out of three right.
And your "style with no substance" jab is inaccurate and laughable.
the iMac would be less expensive than the Dell in this case.
Sweet Looking machine but geez the keyboard is god awful lear from APPPLE .....the way everything looks matters
Computer is pretty slick... much sexier than that Gateway black hole of ugliness, but I want the keyboard! Anyone know where you can get that (directly from Dell), and if not, something close to it? Touchpad on the right is genius compared to right-in-the-damn-way-and-incredibly-uncomfortable-and-unnatural middle.
the touchpad in the keyboard is brilliant!
That is one sick machine. Does it look like a copy of the iMac? No. Why not? It's just not. One clam cell phone is not a copy of another just because of the general shape. Different machine. Awesome machine (I think?).
-- Karim Baz
hey , im a PC and um i think that after this new diet im getting closer to my goal for the end of the year! im almost an iMac what do you think?
Uh.. has anyone noticed that there is no second monitor port?
cool lookin' but no thanks.
