Today we snagged our copy of Apple's latest version of OS X,
Leopard -- something one or two of you may be slightly familiar with. So besides all the stuff found on the
300 features page, besides all the stuff you've seen in the months of public betas, what do you want to know? We'll be here to do our best in illuminating the whole experience for you during the crucial, painful next few hours wherein you've nothing left to do but wait patiently for launch and ask Engadget questions about the technical minutiae. Let's kick this thing off:
- Apple confirmed it: no backing up with Time Machine over the drives you have connected via USB to your Airport Extreme. Also, no Time Machine backups to SMB shares -- AFP network shares only. Again, yes, Time Machine can back up over the network, but ONLY to AFP shares, ok?
- When plugging in a disk Time Machine does its song and dance, but what we wanted to know is whether it requires you dedicate that disk for backup use exclusively. The answer: it doesn't, you can go on using your external drive's free space as you please, but Time Machine will also take advantage of selected disks for backup. And no, if it's an HFS-formatted disk you're plugging in, it won't ask you to format it.
- Classic support wasn't killed for any technological reason, but because Apple felt that it was finally time to move on, and that support was no longer necessary. Sorry QuarkXPress 4 users!
- Apple's fancy new screen sharing is VNC based, meaning you can use it to connect to any VNC-shared system, Apple or otherwise. However you can't use the iChat screen-share with anything but other Apple machines, despite being VNC.
- Nope, there's no YouTube in Front Row.
- Sorry, syncing notes to your iPhone won't work either. Well, not entirely. The notes Mail.app keeps are actually just HTML email messages in a special folder, and if you use IMAP it will sync that special notes folder to your server. So in theory, if you have IMAP and you access your IMAP email through your iPhone or other device, you can view / edit those notes. But no, they don't sync to the notes your iPhone's native notes app keeps.
- Yeah, the
R2D2 "Apple hologram effect" didn't make the final cut, either. Help us Phil Schiller, you're our only hope.
- The upgrade took about an hour on our 1st gen MacBook Pro (2GB RAM); expect it to eat up another ~3GB of space.
- Yeah, you can't add drives to the dock You can still add drives and folders! It just doesn't always work when we pull it over from Finder.
- We can confirm Leopard supports A2DP! (It's a little buggy, but it's definitely working.)
- More questions answered after the break.
- Yeah, you can see yourself reflected four times on the box cover -- one in each part of the holographic galaxy. Of course we're vain enough to notice, so what?
- Final build is 9A581.
- Time Machine lets you pick which drive to use as your backup drive; we don't have a second internal drive on our test laptop, but there's no reason it shouldn't let you pick an internal drive as your backup.
- So far we haven't noticed any slow downs from the upgrade -- except when backing up over a million files (duh).
- We haven't found a way to turn off the translucent menu bar, but it's really not that bad. Definitely better than Vista's Aero glass, which is distractingly translucent.
- iChat Theater ("document sharing") works with any format file or document the presenting machine can support. Why? Because it makes a video stream of the document so the person on the other end doesn't have to support your file types, you insensitive bastard.
Mac Installations on non "mac" hardware have never been really an out of the box ordeal. You may want to google for different types of Mac OsX86 projects. As for myself I ran 10.4.5 forever on my dell but today I am just going to be crossing over to the darkside. 10.5 here I come!
Does Leopard have Quartz 2D Extreme finally enabled? Tiger had preliminary support, but was never activated.
I shelled out a couple hundred dollars last year to upgrade my Color Classic II to a G4 running at 600mhz. My question is will the OS 10.5 work? I got it to work with 10.4, but it was tricky. Anyone have any idea? Does this require G5? If so, is there a G5 upgrade for my Color Classic II??? Thanks
The answer to all of your questions is...
NO!!!!!

You need a much faster processor, a DVD drive...
Are you Strong Bad?
Only Strong Bad uses computers as hopelessly out of date as what you claim to be slinging.
hopelessly out of date! Would you call a 55' Chevy hopelessly out of date? Technology does nothing but take one seconds advancement and turn it into the next seconds junk. I personally think the Color Classic is one of the cutest Macintoshes ever made. I own a G3 PowerBook, and I refuse to buy the latest MacBook because I will not be driven by what Steve Jobs says I should own. I can read email, use Word, and download digital pictures on this laptop. Why do I need the latest and the best? Like I said, this seconds pride will be tomorrows “hopelessly out of date” trash. Let’s get green and put old technology to better use.
looks like your second comment answered your own questions. You dont want to be driven by what steve jobs says you should own, so dont get leopard, because Steve thinks all mac owners need it.
Joseph, you make a good comment and point. Steve Jobs and countless other technology pioneers wouldn't have a job if more people were green like me and used technology longer. I am human, and I get excited when new things are released. If I was all caveman I wouldn't even have a computer.
Les I fail to see your logic. On the one hand you advocate the use of older technology for longer periods and claim how satisfied you are at being able to use your typewriter for email and word... and on the other you are upset at the fact that the very latest 64bit operating system is unable to function on your abacus.
If you are so satisfied then you have no need for such advanced software. If on the other hand you wish to take advantage of the features then you have to move with the times. You classic automobile is a nice analogy but does it get 5 stars on a euro ncap safety test. Does it have remote central locking, 87 air bags, side impact zones, sat navigation and a 21st cup holder. I guess not - if such things are important to you then you'll need a nice new car...
And Leopard!
I made a silly post regarding "will this OS 10.5 run on my old Color Classic". Obviously people want to play around with mega-upgrading old technology or the G4 upgrade for the Classic wouldn't be available. Who knows, maybe there is another upgrade beyond the G4 for the old computer.
Easymac30 made the rude comment "hopelessly out of date" and that is where I followed with a rant regarding how old technology really should have more respect.
The vent was in response to the word "hopelessly.” Yes, it is out of date to the standards created by Steve Jobs, but please people, why be rude. Why???
Come on, lighten up people! It would be “cool” to see a Color Classic II run 10.5.
And is I don’t want the latest OS, so what!
does quick look work for adobe file? .psd, .ai, .ind, .fla?
Works for PSDs..
Not for AI, ID, FLA
Though you do get coverflow preview of ai files...
I would suspect that it will get there eventually for ai..
Surprised it doesn't work for encapsulated PS files either..
Ok here is my one question:
I don't know if anyone has tried this yet but, does the 10.5 version of the bundled bootcamp have any advantages over the the previous releases? I am still debating on wether or not to bootcamp it or just get Parrallels. Thanks!
Mac College kids today, execs tomorrow. See the pattern?
I, for one, ALWAYS welcome our feline-monikered overlords...
The applications I'm concerned about are FruitMenu, Macstumbler, Parallels, and KisMac?
Anyone know if these are compatible?
Macstumbler appears not to work... just loads and instantly dies!!
Fruitmenu does not work either..
Will Time Machine back up to a .Mac account??
No
Does it actually work?
I've tried installing it from DVD and get the "BSOD"
more info internet search for: leopard install blue screen
also: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5644170#5644170
when it eventually comes back online...
Happened to me. Restarted once, then it got to the desktop. Hard power off, zapped pram 3 times, it booted up. Slowly, but it booted up. After that initial hiccup everything has gone fine.
So try zapping the pram?
Shame, so I see Windows isn't so screwed up as they all say, even the Apple users gets a BSOD(Windows trademark) now and again...
But Joseph, if "Steve thinks all mac owners need it" then why leave me and my Color Classic II and Mac G3 in the dark? Why label me a nerd because I didn't get the lastest?
Can Mail.app easily import notes from Palm Desktop?
Is it possible--perhaps even easy--to get Front Row to display on a second display now?
Thanks!
I know that Windoze has had this feature for a long time, but does Leopard have the ability to group files by type under headers (a la Spotlight) in normal Finder windows?
If not, does anyone know of a utility that will do this?
Okay, so everybody going to the Apple Store has got 15 minutes or so before the feeding frenzy.
So here are a few of my thoughts to set you on your way.
I installed Leopard at about midday, GMT.
It took about an hour or so to upgrade a Intel MacBook Pro with 2GB.
Installation was completely painless and since then there have been no crashes debugs or anything remotely hinting at snagging issues.
CS2 functions perfectly well as do all standard Mac OS apps.
Not a big fan of the new menu bar or the charcoal Apple icon at the top but I am not going to lose any sleep.
The dock is better looking if that's what floats your boat.
Stacks is very very cool as is spaces although you can find you brain becomes stretched when you have a million things open spread across 4 spaces.
Webclips are basically awesome... there is no other word to describe the ease and power of this feature.
Time Machine just works.. although sorry to all those Airport connected USB fans.
Software Update does not seem to be working at present though it looks like an Apple Server problem rather than an OS one.
The new finder is a definite improvement although coverflow doesn't excite me as much as I had imagined it would... though it's early days yet.
Big fan of quickview specially for PSDs since loading Photoshop to confirm it's the correct PSD to attach to an email can be annoying.
Looking forward to trying Desktop Sharing later on when I have it installed on Mac Pro... though if it's anything like conventional VNC over Airport then it will be far too slow to be of any practical use.
Spotlight over across the network is dreamy!!
I suppose I am not as blown away as I had expected but in hindsight I don't really know why I imagined I would be. The real power of the new features is going to be its impact on my workflow in the coming weeks when I am actually using things as opposed playing with them... and of course more importantly the degree to which new software takes advantage of the core features of the OS.
By now it's probably about 10 minutes from release time so good look to everybody with their upgrades and have fun with the new features.
The most important developer question: Does it have Java 6 or JDK 1.6?
What's the default wallpaper?
Have you guys test it on an iBook G4 1.33 ?
Software Update is now working fine on Leopard.
This really is Vista 2...
I need to resize the Boot Camp partition I created with the beta. The betas force me to delete the Windows partition and create a new one, which strikes me as dumb. Does the final version of the Boot Camp Assistant allow the Windows partition to be dynamically resized?
I have my iTunes library on a particular external drive, but I want to use Time Machine on another (larger) external drive. Can Time Machine back up the entire iTunes Music-holding volume to the other, larger external drive? That is to say, in the list that the Time Machine system preference gives us for the items to back up, can we add a whole *volume* to it, even if that volume isn't an internal volume or a full computer? How does Time Machine represent this on the Time Machine volume?
iSCSI! This was originally listed in Leopard's specs, but it is gone from recent beta builds. Did they quietly take it out?
Will Time Machine work with a Linux AFP share?
Things didn't work out quite as well on the Mac Pro.
Leopard installed fine, or seemed to. Following reboot I get a blue login screen with a moving mouse pointer but that's as far as things get. Tried Safe Mode but get the same thing.
Disconnected all attached hardware devices and get the same thing.
I can't recall any applications listed as startup that might kill it and besides they wouldn't load prior to login anyway.
So, at the moment I have no idea what's wrong.
Let's hope it's nothing that will force me to put Leopard next to my copy of Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition...
Booted from Installation DVD and did Archive and Install by selecting Options when choosing installation drive..
Everything worked fine and all files and programs are as they were...
No bother!!
So, is there a screen sharing app separate from iChat? That statement isn't real clear.
TM doesn't work to AFP shares on my NAS box, which is a Lacie networked disk. It only works to *some* AFP shares.
So, has anyone found out yet if Leopard now natively supports play-back of Blu-Ray media?
I'm really looking forward to this as I'm planning on purchasing a new Mac very soon, and I am also planning on upgrading said Mac to have an internal Blu-Ray drive.
Obviously I'm in the minority here, but what about File Vault. Is it the same/hopefully better (no "Do you want to retrieve file space?" every time you log off) in Leopard? Do I have to turn FV off before I upgrade?
Lack of Java 6 is very disappointing.
Will the version of bootcamp that comes with Leopard work on pre-intel macs? (ie: powerbook G4)? Thanks.
I was just wondering if it's possible to use your iPod (in disk mode) as a destination for backups from Time Machine?
well i'm using tiger now, i have a macbook pro and an imac which i got a few months back. and as far as i know, there's only the single user and 5-user pack. is there a 2 licence pack or something like that?
has anyone else had problems with iflash?
it was opening and working just find and i quit it and then i tired opening it up later and it opens, freezes up, and then quits.
Hi guys!
I 'm searching the net for info about Leopards capability to o recognise the rest of memory that Tiger wouldn't on dual core and core2 MBPs & MacBooks...
I know that the system sees 4Gb but a 32bit limitation (?) of Tiger uses 3.25Gb...
I read threads that speak about software limitation and some about hardware limitation that couldn't understand since the system sees 4Gb...
Thanx in advance for any other info and please excuse me that i can't read at the time all the postings . If some thing like this answered before... just a "look back you fool" could helps me . : )
How's the voice recognition in Leopard? Can it do speech to text?
OMG...look at this, people are insulting each other when they can ask what's new on the "Most advanced OS in the world"
Just goes to show what type of people uses a Mac
Vista rules the pack
Its not just classic that no longer works, but FCP 4.5 as well. First I purchased Leopard, then wound up updating all my adobe products as FCP seemed OK. Ok until I captured some footage that is -- which entirely crashes the system. Soo now Im faced with going back to an aerlier operating system and losing that new adobe software, or, updating FCP to studio 2. Which also will not work on this Mac. If I had this to do over again I would go PC Avid....
