E Ink shows off front-lit, flexible e-paper displays
E Ink Corp looks to have rolled into this week's FPD International show with a fair bit of new paper-replacing gear, including a number of prototypes that it's developed with some of its partner firms. In addition to the E Ink watch we've seen before (and given away), the company showed off a new front-lit e-paper display developed by Alps Electric, which promises to let you get in some paper-less reading even in complete darkness. Also on display was a 9.7-inch e-paper display with an integrated flexible TFT substrate although, judging from the picture after the break courtesy of Tech-On, it doesn't appear to be completely flexible. It does boast a decent 1200 x 820 resolution, however, and it should actually be available relatively soon, with mass production reportedly set to get underway in the second quarter of 2008.

Yay! More E-Paper news!
This is one of the technologies I'm the most excited about right now. :)

I am also very excited about e-paper. Unfortunately so far I am still not impressed.
I would really like to see an affordable (

I think this one seems pretty impressive, looking at the bottom picture of the paintings, it looks pretty cool. If the price is right I could see myself buying an e-bookreader with this e-paper technology. :)

I too await the coming of e-paper as I have such trouble reading from a normal computer screen.
Hope they release a scented version when e-paper finally gets up to snuff, the smell of old newspaper would be a nice touch.

A real screen that you will actually want to watch multimedia on in a collapsible mobile device. Hey Nokia lead with a device like this and stop following if you want to ever PWN the iPhone!
John Stracke @ Oct 26th 2007 5:05PM
Not any time soon—electronic ink can't refresh the screen fast enough for video.
CJ @ Oct 26th 2007 5:21PM
"Electronic ink" does not need to refresh like current displays. THAT'S THE BEAUTY OF IT! The display only uses power when it needs to change the image. If it doesn't need to change it remains static. You could theoretically put an image on an e-paper display, remove the power source, & the image would not change! JUST LIKE PAPER... Hence the name...
robert @ Oct 26th 2007 7:41PM
You missed his point completely. He was saying that electronic paper can't show videos because the refresh rate is so slow. What you said makes it sound as if you want to watch the still of a video forever.
CJ @ Oct 27th 2007 3:11AM
Really? I think you guys are missing the point of e-paper all together.
In order to get refresh rates capable of displaying video, you would most likely find that power consumption would be similar to modern LCD's. The purpose of e-paper is to create a durable electronic book, that uses very little power, & can be updated via a wireless connection, not to replace the LCD. When you are reading you only need the page to refresh about once a minute. 24 times a second would be cool, but it's not the vision of the E Ink Corporation, so don't hold your breath.
Check out their site if you don't believe me: http://www.eink.com/technology/flexible.html

oh you just had to go open up an old wound by mentioning that awesome watch that i didn't win, didn't you?
When i kill myself, it's your fault! YOU HEAR ME?! YOUR FAULT!
Wwhat @ Oct 27th 2007 5:46AM
"mass production" isn't that a bit of an overstated statement?
I bet you could fit ALL e-paper of the entire world of any brand in one small truck (or lorry if you are british)
