P.S. -By the way, if you're planning on picking yours up at your local Wally world, buyer beware: they're selling GH3 with the old school guitars from GH2. We're not sure if this is going on elsewhere, but you should definitely keep an eye out.
Does the game have the real songs this time, or are they still covers?
Most songs are masters of the songs but there are some that are still covers.
So far I am enjoying GH3 even though I have only had it for about an hour.
What difference does it make?
The game doesn't teach you how to play Guitar for real.
At least DDR teaches you how to dance (if you make it to expert mode).

The word axe is a perfectly acceptable slang for a guitar. Its been used for many, many years. It's not like Engadget is trying to get us to start using a new slang word and I'm sure that there are much more important things happening on this rock that you could burn your BTU's on.

Yknow, I'd have mine if Redoctane didn't lie about me being 'one of the first to get it'. If by one of the first they mean "You'll get it 4 days after release" then I guess they were right.. Bastards... Wtf is the point of the pre-order then?
The point of pre-orders is so that they get your money earlier and make interest off it while it sits in the bank:)

They can't tell me they didn't have them in stock in Colorado on the 18th when they took my money, even though they shipped on the 25th.. Best Buy and CC has logistical hurdles to go through that RedOctane doesn't.
Heck, Amazon.com has my Mac OS X Leopard upgrade and it wasn't supposed to ship until the 29th. As it goes, I'm getting it ON the 29th. 1 business day is a small price to pay for a better deal overall.
Preordered mine from BB and picked it up today. No problems, no delays... just some good ol' rocking!
And most preorders (from a decent place) won't completely charge you until you get the product. BB sells the preorder for $5 and then you pay the rest when you pick it up.
RedOctane said they'd not charge me until it shipped.. They billed me the 18th, shipped the 25th... Liars.. :) I get a few good freebies (gig bag, etc.) but had I known I was going to have to wait until Wednesday, I woulda gone local.
I pre-ordered mine from RedOctane and it arrived Friday the 26th. I did not expect to see it until next week.

it's a good thing they finally addressed the bulkiness issue by making it collapsible, it's a pain in the ass to store the old ones anywhere if you don't have an abundance of space.
Except for the fact that a good percentage of the collapsible guitars don't seat properly and have bad connections causing the fret buttons not to work half the time. Ugh.
I opted for the PS2 version, as I already have two controllers for the console. Even then I regret not getting the Wii or the 360 version. No online play FTL! :(
i was at walmart for the midnight release. they botched it so bad i will never go there again for a game release.
1. ps2 and 360 bundles were packaged with the previous gen sg/xplorer guitars when they were supposed to have a kramer (ps2) or a les paul (360)
2. they lost the wii and ps3 bundles becasue they were on another load apparently and they did not make it out to the floor right away which led to quite a few unhappy people.
3. they also had trouble finding the copies of just the game for the ps2 and 360 for those of us gamers who are strapped for cash.
i feel sorry for the people at walmart who got screwed into buying a bundle at full price and didn't even get the guitar they were supposed to receive. who dropped the ball there? redoctane or walmart? either way, i think somebody needs their @$$ kicked for screwing the customers but its also their own fault because i was telling them in line what it was supposed to come with but they still bought it anyway despite it being the wrong guitar included.
well if the wrong guitars were in the box for 3, thats RO's fault.
But Supply chains are what walmart does, so the wii and PS3 versions not being in stock at the launch event, thats completely walmarts fault.
What happened to the simultaneous release of the console and mac/pc versions?
So I've never watched an unboxing before...but is it usual to go over every little detail? I mean, I'd be much more interested in watching the actual gameplay...though I'm not personally a fan of guitar hero, so I don't care much about either. But seriously, what's with all the talk about the stickers.

It's pretty normal to talk about all the different pieces of the packaging and the little things that come with it. Curious minds want to know, of course.
i dont know about you others but i got my gh3 on friday, two days before launch. to make it fair i pre ordered it from the redoctane site so i guess that could make a difference
I got mine at gamestop at release....there are so many better features than GH1&2
1. Came out for the Wii!!!

3. ONLINE GAMEPLAY FOR THE WII!!!
4. Amazing songs
5. Huge storyline upgrade from GH1&2
I own all three just not the "rocks the 80's" and the third is definitely the best of all four!
guitar hero has a story? ive never played it before, but i mean, it seems like the kind of game where you just jump in and start playing...
Well, 'story' is a stretch of the word. To be more specific, there are non-voiced/ non-dialogue/non descriptive events that elude to some sort of artistic narrative. Its just meant to sweeten the deal.
Guitar hero III is a great game though. By far the best of the series. The Les Paul controller is one of the best investments in gaming peripherals that I have ever made though.
well its kind of like your journey through becoming the guitar hero...this one includes cut-scenes, the others didn't...and you get more money for your sponsorships...
Wait a sec, CJ ADAP, did you say you got yours on friday with your preorder from redoctane? I got a preorder from them, and so did my friend (I got the bundle for PS3, he got the PS2 game only). Both of ours were shipped on the 25th, but they are not supposed to be delivered for us until Nov. 1st.

With guitar hero 1 and 2 on ps2 you could use a normal controller. I really wanna play the new version but I cant play guitar. With the Wii version can you use the classic controller ?
You can't, as the guitar for GH3 is the only guitar that can plug into the Wiimote.
However the instruction booklet for the Wii version does give you details on button mappings for the Wiimote so, although you may not be able to use the classic controller, you could use the Wiimote. Will that do?

my mom came home from sams with it and it had the old guitar and i was like wtf. so i will keep it and buy the new guitar on ebay.
Grammar check your posts engaget, "mother's" is not plural. I can't believe people have trouble with this.
Umm, I think they're using a contraction with mother and has. They're taking the prase "everyone and their tattoed mother has picked up a copy" and shortening it to "everyone and their tattoed mother's picked up a copy."
By using a contraction in this instance it takes a more spoken language approach to the sentence rather than a formal one. This is a common practice with the internet and blogging in particular as formal writing style is almost never used.
It was a good attempt to make a correction though. Your effort shows that you care.

Not sure if you can just play with the remote, but honestly that wouldn't be very fun. If you are saying you can't play guitar, aka you suck at it, don't worry. I suck at guitar hero itself and I still love it. If you physically can't then I dunno what to say lol.
yeah you can play with the remote...it shows the controls in the manual...it looks a little harder than using the guitar...ahahaha
Okay, I have the PS2 and PS3 and opted for the wireless controller and GH3 for PS3 last night. I got it home and started playing. It turned out that the wireless controller has about .3 second or so lag when any of the frets are pressed. This greatly affects the outcome of every song. Is anyone else having or has had this problem...and if so, it there a fix???
Go into the Options menu and adjust the lag setting.

I was at Walmart this afternoon in NE Texas and the PS3 GHIII was bundled with the new "axe" and not the GH2 version. I couldn't find a 360 version, and the PS2 version was still indeed packaged with the GH2 controller.
Man, am I the only one not really feeling it?
1) I find the levels on the songs are all over the place and that they sound real off.
2) Different feel to the note system. Can definitively tell that there was a new company in the design process.
3) Song's so far (I'm only 1/2 way unlocked) seem kinda crappy. Few good tracks but a lot of mediocre 80's rock... Then again, I'm only 1/2 unlocked so i'll give it time.

wow, i didn't know there were launch parties for this. about 1AM i strolled into my local 24 hour wal-mart and asked if they'd got the game in. dude went into the back and got the boxes. and that was that. i think i walked out around 1:30 with my wii bundle and some wiper blades for my car.
i think there were about 4 10-year-olds picking up the game (worst. mother. ever.) and some other guys getting the xbox version. no lines, no cold weather, just in and out. i guess guitar hero ain't too popular around sacramento?

Engadget - STOP TELLING PEOPLE THE 360's GHIII guitar is wired. It's not. It's WIRELESS, just like the 360's controller. Took 2 seconds to sync, works perfectly.

The demo version of GH3 on 360 at gamestop with the Les Paul has a wire. I don't own a 360, but I was like: "wtf?"
I have it for the 360 and i have an HDTV. the lag is f*cked up! 6ms is too little and 7ms is too much.. and i know its not the way i play because i beat the game last night on a regular tv :S whats goin on?? when i use the calibration tool it always wants to go to 0ms.

Personally, I prefer the GH3 songs to the GH2 stuff. My son had GH2 for his 360 and, while HE loved it, there seemed to be far too much teen metal in there for my taste.
Sure, there's a selection of that in GH3 too, but a much wider spread so pretty much anyone can find a couple of their fave songs in there. In fact good enough that we went out Sunday morning before the stores opened and brought back a 360 version for him and a Wii version for me.
The Wii version is a beaut - guitar looks awesome in gloss white and, with the speaker and the rumble, the Wii version knocks the socks off everything else. And one less set of batteries to worry about too.
Of course none of that helps me beat him... I'm still sweating over the last couple of songs on easy while he can 5 star anything on hard on his first attempt. Wish his school work was like that...

Yeah, passed on the Wii version, my original reason was because XBox Guitar = Rock Band Guitar, but now the GH3 guitar is gimped for Rock Band because Activision SUCKS, but that's OK, beacause guess what?
The GH3 guitar is only a slight improvement over the GH2 controller. Compared to the Rockband "Wired" Fender, the GH3 Gibson is a piece of ____. Don't believe me? Go down to Best Buy and play the demo, the Fender Guitar is amazing in comparison.
Credits in GH3 and the cutscenes rock though. Great animations from the Neversoft guys, I will give props where props are due, but shame on Activision for shipping their game with a gimped guitar.
Some advice for future unboxers, please bring the right tools to the party, a Ex-acto knife would make short work of the end tape and not result in you messing up your box by ripping tape off it. Also, you forgot to get a faceplate for guitar (Best Buy had a free Sex Pistols one that looks pretty cool, but limited ed, so probably gone). Wonder if the Wii even supports faceplates. Humm...
I got the guitar hero III + ps3, tried to play to use guitar hero II dvds and nothing happened.
Anybody knows how to do that?

There are a lot of people having problems with the guitars for 360 at least, because the neck / base detach, sometimes the leads dont make contact and the lock is often not secure enough, so it wiggles around a bit, causing you to lose connection to a fret or two.
a lot of people are having this issue as well. im hoping they do a recall or will replace the guitars.
the wii version came with a guitar w/ detachable neck as well and i noticed the same problem of frets missing a time or two. VERY ANNOYING!!!

I'm a serious Guitar Hero guy playing on a PS2 with a Plasma screen. Guitar Hero 1, 2 and 80's all play fine with the lag @ 90ms. I've completed them all on expert. But Guitar Hero 3 is a mess! I can't seem to get the lag right. I'm starting to think thats not what it is. I can't get through any songs! HELP and I will reward you!!!! -Jess
