Rumor: iPhone coming to Canada on December 7th?
According to a Boy Genius Report that shows an alleged leaked advertisement, Rogers could be launching the iPhone on its network on December 7th. You're gonna need to take this with a big grain of salt though: the depicted iPhone doesn't show the Rogers logo on the actual iPhone, a red bow effect awkwardly cuts through text on the iPhone, and some comments point out that the Rogers logo is drawn incorrectly. We're leaning towards Photoshop job at this point -- what happened to the trademark dispute? -- but if it's true, Canadians could be looking at paying $499.99 of their dollars plus signing up to a three year contract in order to pick up their own iPhone. Is the border really that far?

700mb of data costs $1600cdn ($1640us?) on rogers.
keep the phone. bring us an american cell company instead.
wtf no it doesnt
it costs 80 bucks CAD
what are you smoking? cuz i'd love to try some!
being from canada and seeing rogers ads all the time, this is 99% fake, they use much bolder letters and rarely put that much text on the page
and its gonna be so expensive for data
in canada there is no such word "unlimited data"
for 100$ a month u get:
Included Email & Web 1024 MB
Additional Data Usage +$3/MB
US Roaming Data Usage +$3/MB
Additional Voice Usage +30¢/minute
Monthly System Access Fee $6.95
Monthly Enhanced 911 Emergency Access Charge 75¢
**************
notice how that dosent include talking minutes eh:D
Well:
499.99 CAD = 519.71 USD
This could easily be a result of a few things. The (potentially fake) ad was drafted when the CAD to USD excahnge rate was differnt. Or more likely, with the addition of taxes from your loving government (any government that taxes on blank CDs to combat piracy is a government that loves it's people), import fees, exclucivity fees, and other fees that involve the sheer amount of fees you will be charged the price is ungodly.
Any word on the price of the iPhone over in europe? is it comprable to the price of it in the states? if not is is around $500? if so then that price might not be so odd after all.
As for the ad it'self, it could be a photoshop, or it could just be a mockup/prototype. It's possible it's an internal leak, not really all that likely due to the fact that it's not a very good ad (the phone has somehting in front of it, and is cut off... bad chi) but it is cut off, so it could only be half of an ad.
The iPhone will eventually come to Canada, no dobt in my mind, and since AT&T has no counterpart in the great white north, rogers could be the carrier that brings the fruit to the masses... or it could just be some 16 year old kid messing with canadians... both plausable.
considering this is a leaked ad, its possible that this is an early version, but its reasonable to expect rogers would have a iphone availble for christmas, for the cell phone companys and everything else christmas is big for sales, the iphone is a big popular cellphone, even europe will have iphones in november. i can see the ads (overplayed of course) for iphone now
faked.

uses the same exact red bow as this website.
OMG!
It goes even further, they use the same iPhone as this site!

The iPhone, unfortunately, will be more expensive to buy in Canada then in the US, REGARDLESS of the currency exchange rate.
Even if by some chance Apple/Rogers are appealing to the same percentage of the population in Canada and in the US... they will clearly sell LESS iPhones in Canada then they would across the border because, well, Canada's population is dramatically lower than in the US.
For Apple to make the same/similar profit in Canada, they need to up the price because they know they are going to be selling less units.
......
huh?
stay in school.
It's fake. Molson recently pulled an iPhone prize as part of it's new contest here in Quebec and publicly said it was a mistake and Rogers also commented that no iPhone was due in Jan. 2008.

Why did this Roger person spell "PREORDER" in UPPERCASE? IS THIS HOW CANADIAN ADVERTISING WORKS? BY SHOUTING COMMANDS IN UPPERCASE?
that looks like a Radio Shack add! The cheap looking one in the flyer's.
I was in a Rogers store yesterday inquiring about a tech upgrade as my current phone is horrible. When I asked the guy when we can expect Rogers to get the iPhone his response was:
The sticking points with the iPhone right now are Rogers has its own music store that Rogers customers have to use to load music on their phones, and that Rogers has just spent millions upgrading their data network beyond EDGE technology.
Apparently the Roger's Music Store was a failure, and now they are planning to dismantle it.
ITS TRUE!!!! i was showing the sales rep at rogers my unlocked iphone i just got on thurs and he was telling me how it was gonna be coming out on rogers in december. he also said that apple and rogers werent seeing eye to eye on seperate rate plans for the iphone. which they already do for blackberry customers. anyways i hope there is a way to convert my unlocked iphone to a rogers locked unit so i can update firmware.
It's not going to happen. If it does, as other posters have noted- it's not going to be worth purchasing. I'm going to take it a step further and say they find a way to prevent you from adding songs to it via BT or docking, thus killing the iPod functionality. We can also bet that only certain things will be "unlimited" if there is any truth to that option making its way up here. Perhaps pre-caching various popular websites, but everything else will cost you.
Wow, C$500. 3 year contract. For that price, they better give unlimited data and unlimited maple syrup (lol, had pancakes this morning, just felt like making a canuck-related joke). Somehow I've got a feeling that though this ad is fake, Rogers will actually charge that much once it's announced.
This is the first time that I genuinely believe that UK customers are getting the best deal :)
did anyone other than me notice that the top-down view of the "iPhone" is actually the iPod Touch?... best evidence that it's a chop job...
that and the fact that Rogers would NEVER use green fonts in their ads...
Hmmm 3 years hell noooooo!!!its like u are selling your soul to the devil.
my blog:http://techgamenews.wordpress.com/
I used to work for the big red clowns. I worked in an area where "creative" was produced. I've read the 3" thick (I kid not) "Branding Standards"
You will NEVER see the Rogers name separated from the "Covergence Loop." Ever. The branding police would come and throw you off the property.
100% fake.
Why would there be a copyright logo next to the "Apple" text???
Should be a little R for rights reserved for the name or TM for trademark...
I think we can all agree on this...
mobile data in canada is a dream for now
ted rogers is a dink
everyone here is proud of how much they're getting screwed out of a month for their cellphone, even though for a lot of people it's over $80
we have apple products up here, but this one looks to be a little late to market
canadians love having a high dollar, but only because our news reports on it more than they do pretty much anything else :P
Rogers' ads are usually red with white font. The green doesn't even make sense. Rogers' ads are also quite a bit cleaner--this looks very messy. I agree with whoever though, that it'll cost around $499/3yr contract. Remember the Razr when it first came out? $$$$
Well, my contract doesn't even end until May. I'll just get a $100 phone from MTS with only a 1 year contract--I'm cheaping out this year.
Oh wonderful....Snobbery for the rest of us.
Seriously. The iPhone == Look at me I'm special. I'm trendy. I've ever so popular.
I've yet to meet someone with an iPhone. I hope when I do its in a parking lot, at night, check that late at night. Fewer witnesses that way.
Seriously iPhone == no more f*king third app to badly sync a phone device on a Mac.
If you don't like or need it, don't buy it. Don't worry, we will not judge you.
@ OnZeFly
very true - having a device that CAN sync with a computer SHOULD have software that actually DOES - poorly written software is reason enough to migrate to hardware that is complimented with software.
It is the JUDAS PHONE though
The add is false; others have pointed that out quite succinctly.
Also, the trademark dispute with Comwave hasn't yet been settled so the iPhone trademark is still up in the air. Rogers can't even think about promoting the phone until that dispute is settled;
Secondly, Rogers can't start promoting the phone until Apple officially announces the phone's availability in Canada. Remember when Orange in France announced that they would carry it? They had to retract the statement and wait two weeks until Apple made it official. It won't officially show up here until Apple makes it official.
PLEEEEASE make it soon!
sorry I'm not buying it - the JUDAS PHONE can stay the hell out of Canada for all I care - our laws may also have something to say about that bricking firmware - this will appeal to people who have a income a little higher than middle class and they want to make sure everyone around them knows.
anyone else see the JUDAS PHONE commercials on TV in Canada yet?
After going to the Q4 launch party last night I will say that you will not see this phone for x-mas. The Rogers Tag-line for Q4 is "Bling in the new year." They will be pushing the Razer2 and the LG shine slider as well as the "vision" phones. For the readers to the south, Rogers Vision is the first video calling of its kind in North America. That being said, Apple and Iphone got referenced all night here and there and if anything I expect we will see something in Q1 or Q2.
Rogers isn't the only GSM provider in Canada. There is also DCI, which is much better:

I think it's late for them,
Turkey has it already :)
How is this possible?
Real Rogers iPhone Ad:
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/4396/rogerswirelessiphoner3ry6.jpg
this isn't up to roger brand guidelines.
i'm gonna say yes this is a fake... for the obvious reasons stated in other comments, but also because its a friday... apple doesnt do releases on fridays...
Well, December 7th has come and gone and still no iPhone...
And anybody that knows anything about design knows that this ad is a complete fake since it's so poorly done. I can list dozens of design errors after just glancing at the ad. Simply an amateur having some fun. Definitely not an official Rogers ad, and going by the date, it's now been proven. The 'Real Rogers iPhone Ad' posted by Anonymous is much more inline with Rogers standards and is at least properly done.
Two things have been holding up the iPhone release in Canada:
1. The iPhone trademark is currently owned by Comwave, a national VoIP provider in Canada that markets a VoIP product called iPhone.
2. Rogers greedy data plans which, compared to AT&T's iPhone plan would cost $1000 more due to the amount of data required when using the iPhone (ie. visual voicemail, sending/receiving email and attachments, etc)
Considering both points however, it's reasonable to assume that Rogers, Apple and Comwave have all had a reasonable amount of time to address these challenges. This means that we could hear news about the iPhone release in Canada during Steve Jobs' Keynote at this month's 2008 Macworld Conference and Expo.
