Samsung lays out OLED roadmap
Samsung's already proven itself to be pretty big on OLED, and it doesn't look like that's about to change anytime soon, with it now taking advantage of the FPD International show to lay out its plans through the year 2010. According to Tech-On, in the nearest term, Samsung says it expects to have 3.5 to 7-inch panels ready for use in various ultra mobile PCs in 2008, which will be followed by 14, 15 and 21-inch panels for laptops and desktop monitors in 2009. Further on down the road, Samsung says it'll push out some full HD, 40 and 42-inch OLED panels in the year 2010, at which point the technology will no doubt seem woefully outdated. But that's not all, while it's apparently not committing itself to an exact date, the company says it expects to have a flexible OLED display "by 2012 at the latest," and even some OLED lighting systems that it says could cost as little as "1 euro cent per lumen."

Do they have plans to sort out the longevity problems?
HineyWipe @ Oct 29th 2007 3:16PM
Yes they have, it is called PO (Planned Obsolescence).
1. Manufacture OLEDs (knowing EOL)
2. Consumers buy new one when previous model dies.
3. Profit!

@Wolfticket
Sony's XEL-1 OLED TV is estimated to have at least 30,000 hours (which should last you a decade with average use). However, Sony and other companies have managed to produce OLED color components that last 60,000 hours (that includes Blue, the typically problematic color with the shortest lifespan).
Large OLED TVs are expected to have at least 50-60k hour lifespans.
Not bad at all, eh?

you missed out one major step, should be

What gadget, spammer?
Piss off.

Anyone who trades or invests in stocks and wants to ride Samsungs (and others) progress in OLED should check out PANL (Universal Display Corp) They are the ones who own all the patents and work with the electronics makers. I have been in the name for some time... hopefully it will show a nice return.
Sorry for the semi-spam... but some may find this informative

Others intested in how the tech will develop should check out QD vision (http://qdvision.com/) and Dynamic Oraganic Light (http://www.dolight.com/) which are two companies encorporating semiconductor nanoparticles into OLEDs. The semiconductor nanoparticles have very narrow emissions so will produce superior color quality compared to organic emmiters in curent OLEDs. The more I read about OLEDs the more enthusiastic I get about this technology, OLED displays, OLED lighting etc.

Why would someone want to buy a company that has been around for over ten years and never made a cent? If their patents aren't making them money yet, they never will.
Jim @ Oct 30th 2007 10:40PM
Well, I'm looking at analyst estimates for the next 2 years, and they look pretty crappy. A few million more in revenues is all you are looking at. Now, if you expect me to think you know more than an analyst assigned to the stock about their future revenues, well, I'm not buying it.
peterskruger @ Oct 29th 2007 5:06PM
I'll get back to you in that in two quarters... It will all make sense then
boe @ Oct 29th 2007 5:28PM
I ain't belieiving any long term comments - I was bummed by SED - not pinning any hopes on anything else that isn't being released within business quarters. Let me know when you plan on releasing a reliable 80" screen.
Johan S @ Oct 29th 2007 6:26PM
QVGA sucks. And WQVWGA sucks too. I want VGA in a 4" or smaller display. The technology is exit. It's cheap.
Anyway, I'll be willing to pay for a phone with an 800 px wide display that's no wider than an iPhone.

So, for 68400000000000000000000000 Euros i can get a 6840000000000000000000000000 lumen OLED sunlamp?

www.plxdevices.com already has a 60mm OLED gauge for cars. SEMA 2007 winner of innovation awards.
