Keyport availability announced, priced outrageously
Those actually looking forward to snapping up the oh-so-capable Keyport keyholder can commence celebrating, as the firm has just announced that sales have begun and that the first batch will ship out worldwide next month. Interestingly, it looks like you'll have to inquire yourself if seeking more details about general pricing and specifications, but we are told that a Limited Edition Keyport Slide will soon be available to those select individuals on the "reserve list" for a staggering $295. And that's not even including the $75 shipping fee for those outside of America (saywha?) plus applicable duties / taxes. We'll be sticking with the oval, thanks.

do they deliver it on foot?
Joe V @ Oct 30th 2007 9:39AM
This thing has Art Lebedev's stink all over it. My bet: by the time it ships in 2011, it will only hold one key and will cost $1300.
nih @ Oct 30th 2007 9:41AM
For that much you'd at least expect it to look like it was made out of titanium. You could probably get a keymaker to mill one of these out of a block of aluminium and fit your keys in it for less.
david @ Oct 30th 2007 10:32AM
Titanium, geez, you'd think Platinum. That price is nuts. The knockoffs will be out in a month (tops).
Bernhard @ Oct 30th 2007 9:41AM
The $ 75 is for the gold-plated packaging and shock absorbers...
strider_mt2k @ Oct 30th 2007 9:41AM
Ignore it.
It'll be gone soon.
Xtopher Robin @ Oct 30th 2007 10:01AM
Wait. For a piece of plastic and some sawed off keys? Correct me if I'm wrong, but what is keeping me from making this myself? O_o

market them at $30 and make a fortune.
MikeTV @ Oct 30th 2007 9:50AM
2.95 and $75 shipping, what is this, Ebay????
fobunited @ Oct 30th 2007 9:56AM
I visited the company website, which claims RFID and remote for vehicles.
I would like some more details on what that entails. For example, many newer vehicles on the market come equipped or has as an available option keyless entry and keyless engine start.
Also, many luxury cars have laser cut keys. I wonder if they will be compatible with this?
ahammad @ Oct 30th 2007 2:34PM
I'm on their "exclusive" list, but for 295+75, it's crazy. I was willing to put up $50 max, but this is too much. Plus, if you end up moving/buying a new car, it'll cost another fortune to replace some of the keys. Not to mention that there is an extra charge for chipping the car keys for newer cars.
It'll flop.
pospressure @ Oct 30th 2007 4:54PM
I'm on the exclusive list too. When I saw the price I posted a comment in their forum expressing my surprise at the price and asked if they did any polling to see what people would pay for this thing. As I posted I noticed the only comments is saw were people saying YES!!! I'm ordering it now! This is the best day ever!!!
Five minutes later my post was deleted.
Joe @ Oct 30th 2007 9:58AM
So what? All it does is store three keys? The thing looks kinda large, why would you want to carry that instead of three keys? Also.. don't they something like that at the dollar store? XD
aaronparker @ Oct 30th 2007 10:00AM
The $75 shipping fee is incorrect. I received an invitation to purchase one of these, and it reads:
"Price [$295.00] includes US Shipping & conversion for 6 metal keys. International Shipping Flat Fee &75 USD + Duties & Taxes"
There is only a $75 fee if it's being shipped outside the US.
nih @ Oct 30th 2007 10:12AM
It's still excessive.
Andrew @ Oct 30th 2007 11:36AM
way to read?

yacoub @ Oct 30th 2007 11:19AM
Why does it have six slots but only three sliders on top?
Justin @ Oct 30th 2007 11:39AM
There are another three sliders on the other side of the key.
Blackster @ Oct 30th 2007 10:13AM
Conversion of keys? So you send them your keys and they fit them into that keyholder? that would ruin the keys for later use without the keyport.
Will @ Oct 30th 2007 10:26AM
So they convert my keys? I don't take their product and get it cut? Really? A company I never heard of until a few months ago will have my home address, my house keys, and my car keys? Awesome.
Bogdan @ Oct 30th 2007 11:52AM
Will: $275 fee is a transportation expenses to get to your house and $75 pays moving costs :)
ScOObyDoo @ Oct 30th 2007 10:14AM
Almost every car key has a transponder nowadays. So this thing is useless before it even becomes reality (since they don't have RF working yet).
The only people this will work for, drive a 1988 Taurus.
I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY @ Oct 30th 2007 4:47PM
According to Keyport's website, you can integrate RFID into your Keyport for cars like Infinity, Mercedes, BMW, and Lexus.
Ron @ Oct 30th 2007 10:20AM
This is really not a bad deal. If the thing does all it says it can do that is. The feature list states that it holds six keys and that it has built in RFID so that it will also replace that keyless entry remote that hangs on your key chain. A replacement remote for most vehicles is anywhere from around $75 and up depending on the type of vehicle you drive.
The big thing will be "if it works". I have an after market alarm with remote start. I have a hard time believing this will be able to be programmed to lock/unlock my doors and remote start my car. If it did I would definitely purchase this. Mainly because of the built in flash light though!
Rich @ Oct 30th 2007 10:29AM
Indeed. A replacement key for my Audi is about 120 quid (~$245) alone. Let alone the price of cutting 5 house keys. Bargain...!

Pinchy @ Oct 30th 2007 10:34AM
I agree with the cost to replace new keys, if they did all the keys for your cars, house, work, etc. I would be concerned that it would not fit into my key slot, with the shroud around my ignition, this looks like it would be too big to fit in the recessed area of the key slot. Additionally, I would not want to send off my keys for a few weeks while they copy and assemble this for me. It is a good idea, but not for me at this price.
Sir_NightSky @ Oct 30th 2007 10:24AM
With that price I would expect 16GB bluetooth enabled flash memory instead of a Swiss Army Keychain.
Let me know when they get it working with an Audi made after 2006. The laughable thing is that I'm sure they'll probably find a few people dumb enough to buy one! I've got a pencil I'm selling for a million bucks btw. All I've got to do is sell ONE!
Jerod Dunn @ Oct 30th 2007 10:29AM
A few years ago in a school club some friends of mine designed something just like this key port for a project. I wish they had patented it now.
hyperblue @ Oct 30th 2007 10:36AM
actually, this stuff is on sale in turkey since 2004, and also patented worldwide with 4 key design, and priced around 20 bucks.
hyperblue @ Oct 30th 2007 10:45AM
oh, and for those who doesnt believe me, here is the link:
http://www.maktasarim.com/
the bottomline says the legal mumbo jumbo in turkish: "© 2004-2007 Mak Tasarım Ltd. Bu ürün ve bileşenleri patent yasalarının koruması altındadır. "Slot" Mak Tasarım'ın tescilli markasıdır"
Andy S. @ Oct 30th 2007 11:31AM
Except that that thing looks like the design was a collaboration between Black & Decker's toaster division and a ten-year-old girl.
They may be similar ideas, but the keys are turned 90 degrees from each other, and honestly, the Keyport is the one I'd be less embarrassed to carry around with me.
That said, there's still no way I'd drop $300 on the Keyport, not a chance.
Sean D. @ Oct 30th 2007 12:50PM
You know some damn talented 10 year old girls. The Mak Tasarim Slot device looks a lot nicer to me (and is availble in multiple finishes). Besides, I'd care more about how it feels in my pocket than what it looks like.
The Keyport, on the other hand, matches the styling of my Black & Decker drip coffee maker perfectly.

Man, you just got down one site... and nobody is going to buy the stuff.
Tom van de Velde @ Oct 30th 2007 9:08PM
You can get a keyless entry system for your car with that money.
chinLao @ Apr 6th 2009 9:46PM
while it's true that the Keyport will add/support the transponder/fob (for keyless entry/starter), it is NOT the one pictured. rather, they'll "custom" make it for you (read: bigger/bulkier than the current design you see). and did i mention the cost of that? STARTS at $5,000. no joke.
me @ Oct 30th 2007 11:28AM
stupidest.......fu##ing..........thing......i've ever seen.
what next a "lighter port" ....to use several lighters at once.......for $500........absolutely moronic.
Eric @ Oct 30th 2007 12:26PM
This is one of those devices for people with such low self-worth and pathetic self image that the only way they can feel good about themselves and "impress" others is by spending money on useless novelties.
I GUARANTEE this will result in tons of lost keys, as the sad people who buy these will undoubtedly leave them out on tables and bars to garner attention, and then leave them there.
I think I see a market in Leather Keyport cases tho. It'll fit right between your cellphone/PDA holder and your Ipod holder on your utility belt.
me @ Oct 30th 2007 12:30PM
now that i could see $20 for a cool leather keyholder isn't so bad, lol.
Andrew @ Oct 30th 2007 11:34AM
A copy of one of my Toyota car keys with the Key Fob/Remote entry cost 400 bucks or so, the key to my dorm room costs 400 bucks if I lose it, my other car keys cost about 275 or so...
Whats wrong with a single key holder that costs 275?
coolblue @ Oct 30th 2007 12:39PM
Erm....What is wrong with a little metal ring that costs a few pence and keeps all your keys together?

Hey... Andrew! Nothing's wrong. Except maybe for the fact that once you put 1,100 USD worth of keys in ONE easy to misplace 300 dollar keyholder, then you'll be out close to 1,500 bucks. Great!
Cheers!

I guess the reason why the "first limited run" is so insanely expensive is because these are custom machined out of anodized aluminum, see for yourself here:
http://proxy.mi.vresp.com/a82f613cc/www.keyportusa.com/emailsupport/images/pro.gif
Still, there's no way in hell I'd pony up $300 for this thing. NO WAY! That's an Xbox360 arcade right there.
Muzz @ Oct 30th 2007 11:49AM
I'd pay $75 for a key-port straight up, but $300 bucks? I'll save that for an iPhone / iPod, thanks.
michael @ Oct 30th 2007 5:31PM
You now he really must be smarter than you, considering all you can comment on is a typo, rather than counter his well put point. Also I have it from a reliable source that his name is a Satire. Of YOU idiots.
Smarter then You @ Oct 30th 2007 11:59AM
Ok so for all of you surfers that don't want it, why bother posting? Like seeing your name on the internet?
Anyone with two hands & ten fingers knows that $295 is a ridiculous price (denoted by the posts above). Anyone with a brain knows that it is a premium price for a premium, limited edition product.
When they release the "first public release product", it'll likely go down in price much like the iPhone.
It is not plastic, it's anodized aluminum. It is smaller than most key fobs and houses 6 keys in 6 slots, 3 sliders on each side to push out your key. For people that have many keys sick of looking like a janitor this is an elegant solution, again at a premium price.
They have been working on this product for quite some time, and will be released in a more affordable plastic product once they get the kinks out of that product design.
No one is twisting anyone's arm to buy it. If it wasn't for the price, all of you losers would be like "that's so cool, I'm sick of having these janitor keys". But then again when most of americans are lazy, don't have jobs, and don't leave their house, they only need their one key sitting next to their front door.
I'll charge you all $5 to see mine November 20th. That'll keep costs down for me
