Drop that Tilt: HTC releases WM6 upgrade for AT&T 8525
So if you don't really need that extra megapixel and auto-focus on the camera, and you're doing just fine with your Bluetooth GPS receiver, HTC has just given you one less reason to upgrade to the AT&T Tilt by finally posting an official Windows Mobile 6 update for the 8525 / Hermes. From today tomorrow through February of next year, 8525 owners can download their first non-cooked version of Redmond's latest mobile OS, giving them some much-needed conveniences like simplified tethering -- and a much-needed refresh for an operating system that's grown a little long in the tooth. So, plug in your Hermes and go nuts; just remember to backup all your info and applications, because they'll be gone daddy gone in less than five minutes.

imacmatt09 @ Oct 31st 2007 8:52AM
Would that work on the 8125 too?
Ayle @ Oct 31st 2007 7:54PM
we already have the cooked one's... And the 8125 is a discontinued product anyway...
3waygeek @ Oct 31st 2007 9:08AM
This upgrade probably won't work directly on the 8125, as the hardware's a bit different between the 8525 & 8125. However, the wizards over at xda-developers should be able to use the official 8525 WM6 to improve the existing unofficial 8125 WM6 upgrades.
Spyvie @ Oct 31st 2007 10:52AM
Except that MS is leaning on xda-developers to removed all the cooked ROMs at the same time they're releasing this.
King Antonius @ Oct 31st 2007 9:22AM
Would this work on an Orange SPV M3100... (A HTC Hermes... dunno what model though)
Drakin @ Oct 31st 2007 9:24AM
You have got to be kidding me...I just purchased one of the Tilt's because it was the only WM6 device AT&T had to offer.
I was going to use it at work to test the WM device over blackberry's.
Balla360 @ Oct 31st 2007 10:48AM
You did it to yourself - both an official HTC WM6 ROM and an unofficial "hacker" WM6 ROM have been available for several months. As far as I can tell, the only difference between this one and the one HTC posted a few months ago is the AT&T branding.
Ayle @ Oct 31st 2007 7:57PM
Well tell to yourself that you have a gps, a better camera and a better cpu than the 8525...
cbehan @ Oct 31st 2007 9:44AM
The link goes to the old WM5 software which has been available since 4/9/07.
Eric @ Oct 31st 2007 9:37AM
Has anyone tried this yet? The HTC site is really slow, but it's downloading... Also, I can't find mention on the HTC site anywhere about it actually being WM6.
What are the advantages of WM6 over what I already have on my 8525?

I personally want to try Live Communications server, as well as Exchange 07 on it. My company is also testing CRM Mobile on the device, but I think that may support WM5 as well.
Eric B. @ Oct 31st 2007 9:43AM
I just installed it, and all it was is an update to windows mobile 5. NOT 6 unless they haven't posted the update to 6 yet on their site. but the "read" link just takes you to an updated rom for WM5 thats all
iGO @ Oct 31st 2007 9:45AM
So where o where (EXACT url would be appreciated, nothing less) do I get this "official Windows Mobile 6" download for my AT&T 8525?
Racy @ Oct 31st 2007 9:47AM
well the HTC site reads "This ROM is available from November 1, 2007 to February 1, 2008." so I am assuming distribution for this ROM starts tomorrow...
iGO @ Oct 31st 2007 10:01AM
Found it

Ben @ Oct 31st 2007 10:08AM
Pretty poor post. The link is for the old ROM and At&t on the phone says the new one is not available....
JAmerican @ Oct 31st 2007 10:07AM
The only reason I still would upgrade to the Tilt is because of the 128MB of RAM and 256 MB of ROM! That's key. Not the tilt feature. That's just an add-on that happens to be included. I'd use the Hermes if it had 128MB of RAM!
PG @ Oct 31st 2007 10:09AM
I'll stick with my favorite bloatware-free cooked ROM's from the great folks at xda-developers. Have been rocking WM6 on my 8525 for months now.
zen313 @ Oct 31st 2007 10:15AM
Crap, and I just sold my unlocked 8525 for 200 profit on Ebay, complete with cooked roms and all. ;-)
Elequin @ Oct 31st 2007 10:29AM
Looks like they've removed the links to the new ROM on the HTC site, perhaps because it's not supposed to go up until tomorrow.
Information, and a direct link to the WM6 ROM can be found at xda-developers:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340987
Note that right now, the HTC page just has the WM5 ROM for download. The WM6 ROM is called "RUU_Hermes_CINGULAR_WWE_3.62.502.3_6275_1.54.07.00_108_UOOS_SVN05_Ship".
:)
boe @ Oct 31st 2007 10:48AM
Be afraid - be very afraid. SPrint has the very slightly newer brother - the 6800/mogul. The firmware "update" caused BT to shut off randomly, the phone to lock up when you switched to roaming, the dpad to lock up. They've sinced yanked it from their site after a few hundred of us reported the issue within an hour or two of testing it.
jrin @ Oct 31st 2007 10:55AM
yah, this morning when it was released, the direct link from HTC was the actaul wm6, but then it was back to the wm5 -- use the link Elequin posted above for links to rapidshare downloads in the event that htc doesn't fix the link...
jrin @ Oct 31st 2007 12:08PM
hmmm, I just installed it, and I previously had the 'unofficial' official wm6 release (from back in june/july was it?), and there really isn't much difference. I linked the total available program and storage memory available after a fresh upgrade to this from over at this post: http://www.jrin.net/2007_10_31/official-windows-mobile-6-rom-available-for-the-cingular-8525 .
has anyone else installed this rom and have a windows media error when trying to update your library from your storage card? I've been having this issue ever since I put wm6 on here :-(
Scott Levitt @ Oct 31st 2007 12:18PM
Just got done with the download and install. The update is live.
jamesf @ Oct 31st 2007 1:16PM
bah, ill stick w/ my AT&T optimized homebrew w/ TouchFlo and all the fixins'.
love my 8525.
Xaq @ Oct 31st 2007 2:40PM
Now with WinMobile 6 my 8525 won't ActiveSync!! I am using ActiveSync 4.5, and I have tried several different USB cables and USB ports on my PC! Help!!!
schwartz_jg @ Oct 31st 2007 5:09PM
If you're using Vista, check for updates. There is a newer version of the Sync Center you need to download for syncing your WM6 device.
Xaq @ Nov 1st 2007 1:49AM
Well... it was either XP's Firewall, AVG or Spybot that was preventing it from sync-ing but now it works!
Anthony Jaya @ Oct 31st 2007 3:12PM
This is old news. The ROM has been out since July if you look under "HTC Asia". It's great...it works on my Dopod 838 Pro.
DP @ Oct 31st 2007 5:12PM
You all do see that it clearly states the upgrade will be available beginning tomorrow, right?
Dan @ Oct 31st 2007 6:23PM
I downloaded it from the HTC site around 7 this morning (west coast time). Just had to refresh the browser a few...hundred times.
WM6 works great and no issues yet. Gotta love free upgrades.
equalizer @ Oct 31st 2007 11:40PM
PIE still sucks...browse a site which shows (ca cert) in every other browser...PIE shows empty space.
Entered device id during setup...20 seconds later unit comes back to life.
The pregnant pauses are terrible and just as bad as WM5...and this was BEFORE I loaded my apps on.
This is NOT WM6....more like WM5.00001. I was hoping for a lot more (touch scrolling, etc.). But we'll have to buy a new device for this...luv' that capitalism.
WM dev't really appears to have stalled...kinda like with Vista...nothing there to care about.
Ballmer's? recent quote about "there's nothing WM developers cannot do" when talking about rising popularity of gPhone and iPhone is garbage. You can't take a picture or video from code...no APIs. The user must manually press button to start video/picture...so much for advanced applications.
OpenMoko/gPhone...here I come.
micah @ Nov 1st 2007 11:49AM
Anyone have the problem of the installer closing ActiveSync? I run the installer, plug in the phone when I'm supposed to and then click update, but once that happens then ActiveSync closes and I end up losing connection with the phone. Any ideas?
Elequin @ Nov 3rd 2007 3:54PM
Micah, yup. See this page:
http://forums.cingular.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=42389
Specifically the post from gslater. I ran across the same thing, and this fixed it. I'm now running WM6. So far I really haven't seen anything worth the upgrade, the feel is a little different... There's no Live Messenger.
