NTT DoCoMo's FOMA 905i handsets on the loose in Japan
It's just not fair. While we're lucky to bear witness to a single hot handset release per month, our Japanese brethren just received a batch of 10 new handsets to swoon over courtesy of NTT DoCoMo. The very best of the best from the new FOMA 905i series includes the Panasonic Viera P905iTV and 5 megapixel Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot SO905iCS. As you'd expect from a handset sporting the Viera branding, the P905iTV is all about the mobile TV with a feature that smooths-out 1Seg's 15fps mobile broadcast rate to display it at 30fps on that 3.5-inch 480 x 854 pixel display. The 17.7-mm (0.7-inch) slab also packs HSDPA and a battery capable of a 1-month standby. Otherwise, it'll pump that TV-to-vein fix for 6-hours straight or up to 80 hours of SD-Audio or 65 hours of WMA if that's your preference. Meanwhile, the Cyber-shot SO905iCS brings a 5 megapixel CMOS camera with 3x optical zoom and 2.7-inch, 480 x 864 pixel display to the Japanese market. It features an LED flash, face recognition and anti-shake stabilization while busting a 24-mm (nearly 1-inch) girth. Plenty more of these two in the gallery below.

What you don't mention in the summary is that all of the new models except for P905iTV and SH905iTV now do GSM in addition to 3G. Finally no need to carry another phone when leaving Japan! I'll be in line when these go on sale, sayonara KDDI...
Now let's see if anyone manages to unlock these, of course most of the nice features aren't really useable anywhere else.
rewozz @ Nov 1st 2007 8:17AM
Unlock? Please, don't try to make this phone appear as cool as iPhone.
Yes, I said it.
Jason @ Nov 1st 2007 8:44AM
What frequencies of GSM? 800, 850, 900, 1800, 1900, or 2100?
Do they accept standard GSM SIM cards?
vanboy @ Nov 1st 2007 10:03AM
@rewozz
If only you know anything about cell phone then you won't consider iphone as cool compare to some of the phones that's from Japan. Just the screen itself (resolution) can beat almost any phone sold outside Japan.
It is very common for people in Japan are using phones for things like video calling and watching TV that we are way behind.

@rewozz-
iPhone- 3-inch 320x480 screen
P905iTV- 3.5-inch 480x854 screen
Don't think so.

Man that P905iTV is hot. Why, oh why can't we get any love?
Gedo @ Nov 1st 2007 10:00AM
Jason: It's GSM 900, 1800 and 1900. They take standard SIM cards like all recent Japanese phones do, however they are SIM-locked to Docomo. If someone were to unlock them you could certainly use them elsewhere (all have English menus), though of course neither OneSeg or FeliCa are useable outside Japan, negating the two biggest killer apps.

rewozz, are you kidding me? Any one of these phones absolutely blows the doors off the iPhone in pretty much any spec you could dream up. The iPhone is a joke to most Japanese. It's like a phone they might have had five years ago, minus the touch-screen.
b_a_boone @ Nov 1st 2007 10:51AM
The iPhone is a great phone and about the only real competitor in the US market to Japan's market. But these phones are far more advanced an many ways. Battery life, camera, screen quality, size, style(some). I really don't want any of them including the iPhone due to the fact that I'm stuck on WM phones. You got to give respect when it's due apply fan boys!
Deuz Augustine @ Nov 1st 2007 11:18AM
How the fuck are we still getting away with releasing ugly phones when all of their phones look like that?
bachviet @ Nov 1st 2007 11:47AM
Because our networks suck and customers prefer "free phones".
Mobius_1 @ Nov 1st 2007 11:24AM
Wow the cyber shot has 3x OPTICAL zoom if im not mistaken... beats the heck out of the digital zoom on my k800i with a meager 3.2 mpx
Jamar0303 @ Nov 1st 2007 12:15PM
DoCoMo should buy out AT&T and release their phones in the States already. They're halfway there (all of their phones support FOMA Plus, which is the Japanese name for 850MHz WCDMA, like AT&T uses) and the wireless market is approaching a large shake-up (700MHz, the introduction of Helio, Sprint and unlocking, etc).
jayuup @ Nov 1st 2007 8:56PM
DoCoMo Japan is already installing the 3G service in Hawaii. But unless I am mistaken, its 1900 WCDMA, not 850.

The Cybershot one is completely gorgeous! Why oh why oh why Sony Ericsson don't release a rest-of-the-world version of the SO905iCS?
Daniel @ Nov 1st 2007 2:26PM
in all fairness, the cybershot is 24mm thick...dont think most people would get a phone that thick unless it was a smartphone...
drsilverworm @ Nov 1st 2007 6:22PM
The SE S710, one of the few japanese-made SEs to see european and american action, was one of the most successful SE phones ever. It bigger and thicker than this hot slider pictured, but with it's huge screen and advanced camera (for the time) it's still considered a classic today by SE enthusiasts.
camij @ Nov 12th 2007 7:28PM
OMG!!!!does anyone know about the video recording specs of these phones???
i dont understand why dont they launch these phones outside Japan?!?!they are far better than any other phone which is available in Europe (and of course far better that iPhone:P)
alx @ Nov 22nd 2007 3:37PM
Can anyone explain me what OS do the 905i series support? If any...
