Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player: $100, this Friday, Wal-Mart
Still waiting to jump into the high def disc game? Or just wanted another weaker, cheaper player for the last-gen TV you phased out to your rumpus room? Well, whatever your reasons, some (not all!) Wal-Mart locations will be selling Toshiba HD-A2s for $100 -- down from $200 -- this Friday. Ridiculous, we know. Blu-ray gonna fight back? We hope so, we'd really like to get our hands on one for under $300, and not just by using our hookup that sells gear out of his trunk, you know?

I don't see why everyone thinks 1080p is so important. Maybe you will notice the difference if you sit 2 inches away from your TV and inspect every pixel with a microscope... Blue Ray is the next betamax.
Picked one up this morning.. great deal. TV is only 1080i so I am good to go for a few years!

Kiss my ass Wal-Mart. I got there at 0735, expecting the sale to start at 0800, JUST LIKE ALL THEIR ADS SAY, and they were sold out. There was one lady behind me in line who I knew who just happened to see people with them so she decided to grab it for herself. There was another lady with two of them. This is why I don't shop at Wal-Mart. I made sure to make a stink about it to their idiot sales people, and the assistant manager, and the manager. I don't mind not getting one because I was too far back in the line, but I was there a half hour before they were even supposed to start the sale. THAT'S what pisses me off.
Congratulations Wal-Mart. You've got a winning team there. I'm sure Sam Walton is rolling over in his grave with what you've done to his company.
Guess 7:35 wasn't early enough then.
I got there at 7 a.m. and there was like 50 of them stacked up, so I went to grab one and they told me to leave them on the shelf until 8 a.m.
Then a few minutes later a bunch of people start grabbing them so I say fuck it and grab one for myself and mill around the store for an hour until I can check out with it.
They were enforcing a one per customer limit and they were all gone pretty quick.
Well.. I went in about 9:30 this morning.. There was a cart there with about 15 or so of them sitting there. I asked the lady if I could just pick it up and pay or if I had to pay and them hand me the player.. She said that I had to pay there, but I could take one and go ahead and pay.
The lady said it would be 198 and I laughed... Told her that there was no way and that I would love to see the store manager since it was a today only special for 99 bucks. She said "hold on" and rang it up and it rang up 99 bucks. She looked over at the other guy working and said "These are 99 bucks today!" they both laughed and said ok... "thanks for letting us know". They didn't know how much the Plasma was either. They did know how much the laptop was, but I didn't care. I didn't want either of those. I just wanted the HD-DVD player.
So.. I was the first person at 9:30 this morning to buy one. God... I LOVE living in a small town where no one cares about stuff like this.
Now i have to run back to pick up the movies.. I didn't see that on the net last night.. stupid me.. I have it hooked up and am watching a dvd right now, but i don't have any HD-DVDs. I have a few Blu-ray, and over 1000 DVDs, so now I will have to start building up the HD collection.
take care!
98 dollars plus 5 free hd-dvd movies? I think it kinda pays for itself. I wish it came with another hdmi cable tho.

This player at Wal-Mart actually does come with a HDMI cable. There is even a big sticker on the side of the box saying so.

This actually does come with the HDMI cable. There is even a big sticker on the side of the box saying so.
The HDMI cable was sealed up in the same plastic wrap as the power cord and composite cables. Like I stated, the side of the box had a big sticker on it about the HDMI cable being included. I guess some didn't get this as a throw in. My box has HD-A2C on it. Maybe ACB or A didn't come with the HDMI cable.
Arrived at my local Wal-Mart at 8:15 to a pretty good crowd. Most were there for the cheap laptop but I pulled the Toshiba from a pretty big pile and grabbed a few HDDVD movies. Staff had no idea what was going on. Manager was in the middle of the chaos smiling and granting price overrides right and left. He knew, but didn't tell his staff. The only pissed people there were the Wal-Mart checkers.
The unit worked out of the box flawlessly and I even prefer the pic and operation to Blu-Ray. I have always said that whoever gets a toehold onto Wal-Mart's shelves will win the HD war and the ante was upped by this ridiculously low price. HD-DVD may very well win this one after all.
"y Blue-ray will have a very large player base installed. I predict Blue-ray will win out due to the PS3 in the long run, but this will not be for quite some time."
well the thing is even with the installed base of a couple million players ps3 can't sell much bluray. thats because people really don't buy consoles to play videos. the market swings when players are cheap for the mainstream. not for niche of gamers..who frankly are cheapskates and will spend on games before films in the first place.
just remember 9 million psp units have sold. what does that mean for umd films? nothing. installing a base of video game players has no bearing on the film market.
Mixmaster..
You found an HDMI cable in that box? Uh.. Where was it? Stuck to the bottom somewhere? There sure as heck wasn't one in mine. There was a power cable, some component cable, a remote and 2 batteries..
I didn't need an HDMI cable so I wasn't disapointed, but... would be nice to have an extra.
In Utah these were 185$ :( F'n Utah
Picked up my hd-a2 & it works perfectly!! Even picked up Transformers to go with it...Love the HD DVD & I can really see a difference between that and regular dvd. Can't beat the price!!
I found out about this deal on www.deallydally.com and I got 1 and then they had the one from bestbuy for $89 and I got another one. its a great player I was leaning toward Blu Ray but for the price difference I couldn't pass it up
"and not just by using our hookup that sells gear out of his trunk, you know?"
I did not find that last comment very humorous at all. It makes You the writer sound very un-educated, ghetto, and un-civilized. I cannot believe that this kind of humor is being used on a blog that is supposed to reach out to "tech savvy" readers. Please hold the crude humor and get to the details.
