Dell brings the 24-inch E248WFP Stateside
Dell's latest 24-incher, the E248WFP, got a little overshadowed when it was released in Japan next to the webcam-sporting SP2208WFP, but now that it's coming Stateside we're ready to love it just as much. The lowest-priced Dell 24-inch display, the E248WFP features a 1920 x 1200 resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio and a 5ms refresh rate for just $469. You're not getting a lot of frills for that number, of course, with inputs limited to just DVI-D with HDCP and VGA, no speakers, and no USB ports, but as a pure screen it's a pretty slammin' deal.

that's a great no-frills 24" display. at that price you could buy 2 of them.
E71 @ Nov 4th 2007 9:04AM
Drop a millisecond or two and I'll buy one.
david @ Nov 4th 2007 12:01PM
Ha! I hope you are joking. Id love for you to prove you can notice a difference of 1ms in a monitor...
paul.davis @ Nov 2nd 2007 3:29PM
WEEE.. woopdedoo!!! Does anybody care Engadget? It's one monitor among tons of them. Not quite big enough for HDMI yet too big for smaller area's with computers. Dell probably SH@# canned their Axim department to make this POS monitor. GOOD JOB DELL.. one more screw up to add to the hat.

Someone didn't take their nap today.
ZapBrannigan @ Nov 2nd 2007 3:47PM
Ummm...I think a lot of people care. Plenty of people want a big monitor with HDCP at a bargain price. This is exactly the no-frills monitor that suits my needs.
BTW, what do you mean by "Not quite big enough for HDMI..."? HDMI is a A/V interface, and the you can in fact use HDMI connections on this monitor simply buy using a HDMI->DVI converter ($10 at monoprice.com). Sure you won't get sound, but then the monitor doesn't have speakers, so hence the presence of DVI instead of HDMI. I think you have your tech acronyms a little bit confused.

At £230 it isn't a bad 24" monitor. A similarly spec'ed Samsung 24" 5ms UWXGA costs £350 here with Acers costing £250. The boxy design is very nice.
Jason @ Nov 2nd 2007 3:41PM
Acer has a "P-series" 24" wide screen w/ a 3000:1 contrast ratio (instead of 1000:1 like the Dell), 2ms response time (instead of 5), and the same resolution as the Dell at Circuit City for $399 with free shipping. If you don't like the Acer name you can buy the exact same panel in a more dull looking Samsung case for $449.
The Dell doesn't seem like a good deal at all to me.
MagusDF @ Nov 2nd 2007 4:16PM
I dont think that asus has a 24" in the P series and the 22 one is only a WSXGA+.
Jason @ Nov 2nd 2007 4:23PM
Acer, not Asus
And Acer does... the model number is P241WBD
SteveS @ Nov 2nd 2007 3:45PM
This is a TN panel monitor. Don't buy it if you're looking for the replacement to the 2407WFP
Jason @ Nov 2nd 2007 4:19PM
TN panel.... no thanks.
tumnasgt @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:20PM
I don't think it is a TN panel, on the website it says it does 92% of the NTSC colours (only the 8-bit screens say it), and all of the specs are the same as far as I can see
Barron @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:43PM
Do you have a link to somewhere I can read some more about what a TN panel is and why it is crap? And also what kind of panel is in the 2407WFP that makes it so much better? I'd appreciate it.
Jason @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:45PM
TN Panel

SethK @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:47PM
It's definitely a TN film panel. Go to Dell specs look at the viewing angle under tech specs - 160 degrees. That's definitely TN Film. If viewing angle and color shifts don't matter to you this may be a good deal. They matter to me, so no sale.
The color extents (92% Adobe, etc) are determined by the backlight, not the panel type (S-IPS, S-PVA, TN Film, etc.)
parallax @ Nov 2nd 2007 4:17PM
E series = TN panel
People, stop buying crap. The market is flooded with cheap TN panels. Manufacturers are changing focus to the low end, decreasing R&D and production on technologies like IPS. Cheap is ok, but come on, progress for the sake of progress.
Can't even get a decent panel on a notebook anymore :|
loci @ Nov 2nd 2007 4:41PM
i love no-frills
its usually the frills that stops me from buying an item
Ben Roethig @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:40PM
Nice for those who want a less expensive, no frills 24 incher, when's the SP2208WFP coming stateside?

Thanks for the link. I'm really out of the loop on tech advances in TFT offerings and helped this clueless one immensely.
John Doe @ Nov 2nd 2007 6:47PM
*whines* When are those sweet, sweet 30" LCD's going to drop in price? They, unlike other displays that seem to drop with time, seem to be suck in the $1500-$1200 range, and have been for years. I want 30"er but that price is still a little too rich, for now.
moe @ Nov 2nd 2007 8:07PM
my dell 2405 is still the perfect monitor for me. the speed is slower but the quality is unmatched by any current offering including the 2407. TN has really drowned the matket with low end product. even the samsungs have lost a lot of my respect in this department. these companies need to diversify like Dell and need to sell TN and non-TN models. The simple fact that very few companies even offer more then a dvi or even just analog is pathetic. I have had up to 4 different products hooked up to my Dell at the same time and did not require any adapters for any of them. the only 2 things missing are fast refresh rates and HDMI both of witch on a high quality image are needed less then on a TN panel. And, yes I game on my high refresh rate and all the garbage about it is just that garbage. Marketing has made the TN panel popular not specs. your refresh rate will have no effect if you are running high end graphics and non-TN hardware.

Yeah, the Gateway FPD2485W and FHD2400
ALL the frills that comes with the 2407WFP by Dell, but is only $500 bucks for the FPD2485W and the FHD2400 is $550 but also has HDMI input.
The FHD2400 can be bought at BestBuy. Im personally waiting till BestBuy sends me some coupons so I can reduce the price even lower. 10% discount means I would be buying it for $500 :D
Im in the same position as you and regret not picking up the 2407wfp-hc for $560, and now Im down to the gateway option. A real pity because I really like the looks of the Dell monitors.
Mike @ Nov 2nd 2007 8:25PM
Unfortunately, the release of this monitor allowed them to shoot the price up on the 2407WFP-HC. A few weeks ago it was $550~ and now it's $689. I was hoping to pick up a pair for Christmas.
Anyone know of a competing monitor that swivels to portrait and is closer to the $500 mark?
slum @ Nov 2nd 2007 9:32PM
i bought a soyo 24" 1920x1200 at officemax 2 months ago. i dont know who the hell soyo is but at 300 bucks plus the 75 dollar 'we'll replace it even if you drive a stake through the screen' replacement plan was the bargin of the decade. granted it has only a 6ms refresh but i doubt the dell looks any better. if they have this deal on bfriday i'll buy 2 more.
Joe_Templeman @ Nov 6th 2007 4:19AM
Panels that cheap are ALWAYS TN panels. Yes they are fine if you dont reallyc are about decent colour reproduction or decent viewing angles...
The 2407WFP HC is the first non TN TFT panel ive had and to be able to move around and look at it from almost any angle without discolouration is just incredible. Never going back to cheap and crappy TN panels again.
nikster @ Nov 3rd 2007 4:12AM
A cheap 24" HD monitor with DVI - what's not to like?

Europeans are0 still having their wallets raped:
http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ie&l=en&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1&sku=128238
Americans get it for $469
E248WFP in Ireland costs €678.81[inc 21% sales tax] (that's $985.63!!!)
& even without tax at €559 (that's $811!) still almost double the price!?!
WTF?!?! O_o
ewizzle @ Nov 3rd 2007 10:55PM
How does this monitor compare to the Samsung 245BW?
Both are similarly priced 24". Any thoughts?
Dave @ Nov 4th 2007 6:24PM
How about a no-frills monitor that has a panel worth a damn? Glossy, S-IPS, wide-gamut. One DVI connection. I don't need USB, HDMI, component video or even DSUB. I want 22-24" of fantastic image quality, backed up with a decent warranty, and not tremble in fear of dead/stuck pixels.
mike @ Jan 30th 2008 5:38PM
The Dell E248WFP is ok, but it has a lot of backlight bleed and the "blacks" are definately not good. In fact, the BenQ G2400W is better! I actually returned the Dell to get the BenQ...
